8th generation of consoles

The end of PC gaming? PC gaming is booming. And not just the F2P/browser-based nonsense, though it helps. PC is retaking the lead on consoles in a big way, especially with consoles overcharging for their services so much. And still barely being profitable.

that might be true. But for me it is dieing. Maybe I am to old for that shit. I have no clue. It is not the quality of the content though. I think many games look at least interesting. But not enough that I want to deal with GfWl, Ubiluncher, Origin, Steam etc. and all of them at the same time. Thats why I think they are killing PC gaming.

When it comes to smaller games like Risen or such then you are absolutely right.

Indeed. Indie games (also on consoles, but much more restricted by Microsoft or Sony). MMOs. Big budget titles games ala Blizzard. Ambitious releases such as TW2. Services such as Steam and Origin, not to mention GoG and the like. Not liking the games produced is one thing, but saying the PC is dying is disputable at best. There are PC games beyond isometric, Fallout style RPGs, you know.[/quote]

it market the end of PC gaming ...
That would be PS2 and Xbox. The late '90s and early 2000s were still a great time for PC gaming, especially if you enjoyed shooters and strategy games. Things were a little less great if you were a fan of RPGs or adventure games, though even that twilight era saw quite a few outstanding releases.

yeah it was an awesome time. So much diversity. Now it all pretty much moved down the toilet.

I am missing those awesome strategy games. Sim City, Age of Empire, C&C etc.

It seems strategy games today are ... not of the same quality like those. There was much more room for different kind of games. Niche titles if you want so. Now it has to be AAA! or AA! Or its not going to be made! Leaves you mostly with Indi titles.

Starcraft? Anno? Relic games? Supreme Commander? Total War? Crusader Kings? Tropico? There's absolutely no shortage of good strategy games.

yes there is.

Star Craft is the old one. THe new one. Cant say anything. I have not played it.

Supreme Commander ? I hope you mean the first game. Because the sequel is a scaled down shit game so it could work on consoles too. - And they even managed to make the story worse.

Total War ? Well. Its a good game I am sure. But for my taste ? I miss those simple strategy games which worked like Age of Empires for example

C&C ? You mean the "C&C" ? It stands today for Cash and Cow because that is what they do with it today. Milking it until its dry. You could as well claim Call of Duty is the bestest shooter evah!

Tropico. Bored me to death. There is no real story behind it. Sure its a fun game for it self. But again. Where is the kind of games which had not only good art/design behind it but have been entertaining in their gameplay and story. Take Age of Empires for example. It was not only awesome in its design but it had a reason to play it. The champaigns have been awesome.

There is if you ask me definitely a shortage in good Strategy games. At least if we ignore a few indi titles. But that is just my view.

I didn't even mention CnC, never enjoyed that series. Yes, obviously the first SupCom, not the one that was released on Xbox. Stracraft II is good and you should play it.

It is true that nothing quite like Age of Empires is being crafted today, that I know of anyhow. Relic games are the closest; if you haven't, I strongly suggest you play Dawn of War (both games, the first might suit you more however) and Company of Heroes. Still can't agree with your claim that strategy games were better before. The focus has changed, but they are still awesome. Shogun II is the best Total War game, if you ask me, tied with Medieval II, and that game has to be modded to be up to par.

The RTS department is still going strong and there is no shortage of strategy and grand strategy titles that are decent, Turnbased has not received much love aside from Civ which I didn't enjoy that much.

RTwP also doesn't strike me, what I want is basically chess with guns - just like Jagged Alliance 2 delivered. Even after all these years there still isn't a game that can hold a candle to it in my opinion.

I also still enjoy Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament a lot more than any of the tactical shooters that have been around for a while now and became the standard. I really did enjoy Serious Sam 3 however, it went right back to its roots and did a very good job in keeping me entertained.

All in all it feels kind of like the major game studios don't have their share of fun and experimentation when creating a game anymore.

obviously when you like the Total War series then this is a good thing.

But besides from them I have a hard time to take many of those strategy games today serious. I am not saying that there is NO good game out there. But much less compared to a time when there has been more room for nich titles. The diversity seemed bigger. You had with many titles more quality. I mean just take perls like Rail Road Tycoon as example. Or the many other "sim" games. There was room for those. And they had very entertaining champaigns.

I have a hard time to find comparable games today. if any at all. Not to mention 3D looks pretty ugly.

I wouldn't mind going for PC gaming to be honest, but here in my country, the only way you can avoid piracy is to go for the PS3. You can't get your hands on non-pirated PC games. I could use steam, but the shitty internet connection here doesn't really allow that. There is also the problem of owning a credit card here...

Sanctions...gotta love 'em!

I'm curious, what part of the world is that?

I'm suddenly reminded of that myth that PS-2s were being stockpiled in order to broken down and turned into guidance chips for missiles.

Same in Russia. They sell games for 150 rubles which by all rights should have been about 2000 rubles (~$65). Quite hard to stumble on an actual licensed 1C localized copy.

serge....

i shall point you to a sentance from that article.

Newell revealed that Valve has done “a ton of work” and experimentation on biofeedback and biometrics until they it became satisfied that they are usable and entertaining.

not impressed.
