Water Chip? Been There, Done That
So my closest neighbor is a small store that used to sell to stores that used to sell stuff to businesses whenever those businesses needed to grease their workers. "Need Christmas presents for 200 workers? No problem give us their adress, name and we will send them a nice steak knife, pay us some more and we will make sure it has the busniess brand on it. Need 1200 balloons with the busniess logo on?"

That type of store. Well, as all can guess businesses tend to buy less presents for their employees in times like these so last Monday they went bankrupt. However they opened up their store to sell whatever was left of their assortment of weird stuff cheaply. So I went there after I was done with my exams and bought myself a jacket. Usually such a jacket would cost me around 500-600nk but now I got it for maybe 150nk. Economic crisis in action.

On the other hand. I have applied for a masters degree in history and with such a bad job market there is more people opting for higher education so I might not get a slot. So basically those are the effects of the economic crisis as I have felt them so far.

Also if I am lucky the crisis will inflate the economy so my student loan becomes less but that is far of.

Now I wonder. How has this recession affected the rest of the people on the board? Good? Bad? Not in any way?
 
I've always lived below my means so I'm actually taking advantage of the recession. I bought a house when the market was at rock bottom, getting more than I ever could normally. I'm refinancing it already since interest rates have now tanked too. Just bought a car with 0 down and 0% interest.
This is what can happen when you have a positive net worth, pay your bills, and have a teflon credit score unlike most of my soft American brethren who fill the void in their life with cheap material shit made in China that won't last a few months, all financed on a credit card at 18%. What a fucking tragedy that some folks might actually have to give up this lifestyle.

My 401K is probably half what it was ( I don't even look anymore). My daughter's college savings account too. I still can't afford health insurance - but my mortgage is paid and there is food on the table, beer/wine in the fridge, kids are clothed and in all kinds of programs. I always lived below my means so this shit doesn't bother me, infact I'm capitalizing on it. I don't need the biggest TV or a BMW or whatever, ultimately I find satisfaction in other things. Free things like playing with my kids, banging my wife, mooching off relatives with a beach house.

This recession?

This particular recession? First recession that I wasn't laid off or working one or more part time jobs.

No 6th day plus 8 (hrs.) overtime available now, still it's a union shop so the base pay may be 20 to 30 per cent better then average 'right to work' America.

Walked in off the street, into one of the last bastions of entrenched entitlement, when it was expanding.
Was unemployed, and took the tests more to satisfy a weekly job search quota then with any expectation of being hired.

Many do their job and no more and this leaves me free to cherry pick from the applied tech that the ''lifers'' will never sully their manicures with,
or read the manuals supplied here or available on line.

Funny, the biggest 'pussys' - here, are the men that can't get dirty or take a risk.
But plenty are gossip whores, know more about my sh-t then I do.
I won't bother with a doctor's colonoscopy, sure one of the know it all's has already seen the video.

But hey, that's my old manual labor attitude infringing on their god given lifestyle.
Must leave those old white trash work ethics in the parking lot and conform to this workers' utopia image of the 'natural man'.

Just got to learn what to kiss and when ...

Nothing new there ...

... just paid better for showing up ...

Too old to just jump, so will have to ride this one as long as I can stand the malaises and the mismanagement.

So staying busy, and every day is another adventure in anger management.

Enduring the good news / bad news is part of the job.

Me and my family live a simple and humble life therefore never really felt any squeeze from the recession.

Plus government servant( my mom work as a school teacher and earn decent income from tuition) have little fear about being axed.
 
3 colleagues got fire, and a fourth got asked to take a temporary leave.

but other than that, the crisis has yet to affect me myself. i've not changed anything about my actions and am about to buy a new motorcycle. so, business as usual for me. i'm not worried at all. my skills are in pretty high demand and i'm confident i could get a new job within a month, two max if i get fired.
 
Over here, illegal drugs are a little cheaper thanks to the crisis.

Go figure. :roll:

I've seen / known of quite a few folks got laid off / fired at my work as of late. I'm feeling like I might be on the chopping block myself although most of me is pretty sure I'm just paranoid.

I've paid down my debts in the past year or so just in case things got worse for me.

All in all, I consider myself VERY lucky that I still have a very cushy job with all the benefits, (medical, OT, PTO). I think most of my luck has to do with my geographical location. Washington State for the most part is the IT capital of the world along with some of the largest industries in the world so things have not been as bad here.

Anyone that I know of whom had a 401K no longer does and will not be retiring as planned; including my parents whom are now in their early 60's and will most likely be working until they leave this world.
 
well yeah it seems Detroid has been hit rather hard by the whole situation. But thats just what I heard so I dont know it really.

Which reminds me, a friend of mine owns and runs an authentic Italian restaurant in downtown Tacoma, Wa a confused European pulls up and rolls down his window to talk to him (sounded like Borat with style).

"I looking for convention center yes? You know, where convention center is no?"

My friend tells him very simple directions and he seemed to be quite grateful and he goes on to say, "I designer, ahhh -cloth designer and these (holds out two jackets zipped up in jacket cases) these I no need, you take yes?"

So my buddy took them fairly confused, Italian guy waved and drove off to the convention center never to be heard from again... The jackets were both several thousand dollar leather Armani's ... :crazy:

I haven't noticed much from the economic crisis, some companies around are having less comissions and some have even gone bankrupt, but that happens all the time. Then again they say that Norway is living in a buble and that we haven't even begun to understand the magnitude of the crisis.
 
All of these new years' crisises have affected me in a good way.

Most game-developing companies where I live are tanking, hard. That led to some people building a new company, and them looking for a concept artist. Suddenly, I got an email with a job offer beyond my wildest expectations.

Secondly, this swine flu hysteria has made the tickets to Mexico substantially cheaper, which is great. I couldn't afford the trip last year to visit my family.

So there it is. Oh yeah. Poland is one of the few EU countries which went through this 'crisis' thing relatively unscathed.

I guess it didn't really - couldn't afford much before, can't afford much now. But hey, i'm not complaining. I have food on the table, i can get medical treatment, i can afford to pay for my studies and i have internet to criticize sloppy game developers/publishers like bethesda.
 
Here in New York times are rough, I was coming back from the bar and a grown man wanted to sell me a stolen bicycle for 20 bucks. Shit sucks right now, I'm probably going to have to go to law school because I won't be able to do much with a bachelors in management at this point and time.
