Does anybody here remember Strife?

Despite being done on Doom's engine, it squeezed every bit out of it, giving us a very interesting experience...
Game is hard, and sometimes tedious, but it's set in a great cyber-fantasy world (I may sound strange, but thet's the way it is, just play it), with a great plot and intelligent, propable missions (eg. no "switch in the bathroom, activating the mechanical stairs to the portculis opened by sitting on the toilet in Afghanistan")

So, anybody played it? Enjoyed it?

Strife: Quest for the Sigil? I remember it. It was released in the era of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake, and was pretty far beneath the standards they set in terms of technical execution, interactivity and game mechanics. Story and setting were pretty mediocre, too (though not particularly worse than in other FPS games of that time - action games sure had terrible plots back then). However, Strife did boast some inovative concepts, such as dialogues, quests and an unusual level of freedom (you could march into a friendly area and cause a bloody carnage among the poor peasantry, and still be able to finish the game). I also recall mindless violence being quite entertaining; one of my favorite weapons was a large and surprisingly effective flamethrower that would set hordes of mutants and peasants on fire and make them die in an unspeakably gruesome way.

I knew that NMA is a good place to talk about good subjects.

Ratty, have you played the whole game? There is certainly more to it, than just mindless violence. As you said, the missions were innovative - like impersonating an Order officer or finding the Castle's gate controls.

Overally I think it's a pretty underrated game, which deserves really some attention, and also (as DDD said) deserves a remake.

DDD - download it. You'll like it.

Yarrr, I be downloadin' it, ya landlubber! I also be attackin' the kings ships an' stealin' all their gold, Yarrr! Anyone who apposes me and me mateys 'll be skewered, yarrr! I be not afraid of guverner Bushes new laws!

Just a quick note, Mike: Make it apparent that we're talking abandonware here, and not actual "pirating" of games. 'Coz them there NMA moderators are swift to bring wrath to corsairs over here ... Much swifter than SHAMO :P

Ι remember playing the demo too, ages ago. There was this mission where a guy told you to steal a sacred chalice, but the guy you return it to tries to arrest you as a rebel thief. Biatch!

All-in-all, I too agree it was a very interesting game. I even tried to get a hold of it back when it was released, but to no avail.

I assume that the whole domain of the Underdogs is composed of Abandonware and freeware. If it was giving out pirated games, then it woulda be closed down ages ago.

And no, I do not condone piracy, DDD. This is abandonware as far as I can tell and Rogue Entertainment is dead for quite some time.

BTW, I own the original, boxed version!

Yeah, I found it too on this great site

I also downloaded some old adventures I've been looking for ages for.
But that's all probably old for most of you.
Also, what's wrong with pirates, I love pirates:

Damn. Why does everybody not understand some of my text?

Am I too weird to live? Am I incomprehensive? Am I not understandable?

*The final blow is delivered. falls unconscious*

[later this evening]

Oh, my head...

I meant computer piracy DDT (no, this is not a typo), pirating software, making illegal copies whatsoever...

Please, no hurt, no kill! Keep alive and next time good bring to you!

Chill, Winston.
I understood what you are saying, I was just joking.
Relax, forchristsake. And stop hitting yourself on the head with vibrators.

I think abandonware is a grey area here.

I'm pretty sure it was ruled okay to talk about it, but not give links. Clarification from admin please?

Yeah, I love abandonware... I found some great classics that I had always played as a little kid, but never really understood. Like Detroit. Problem is I still can't figure the damn game out.

I DL it, but it doesn't semm to work.
pfff...
the graphics looked like crap anyway.

Dude, the games from 1956! PCs didn't even exist back then, so you have to give them some credit for the graphics..

Mohrg
