A Question on Downs Syndrome

Inspired by the debate on the God Gene: If Down's Syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome, how does this affect mental retardation usually symptomatic of the disease? What does the additional chromosome do/block?

If anyone knows and is welling to inform me, I would be most appreciative.
 
I am afraid I am not very educated in this subject, but I will tell you what I do know: People with Downs syndrome look funny.

I know a bit about Down Sydrome, but I don't know the genetics behind it at all.

mhh... The Down Syndrom is a innately handicap.
It's caused by an error during cell division.
The chromosome #21 is copied two times. Because of that it exists 3 times in every cell instead of 2 times (that is why this disease is called "Trisomie 21")
So every single cell has 47 chromosome instead of 46.
 
What do you think how the Revalations of John came to be?
No drug of that time could have caused such a bad hangover.

Thank you. Though it would seem an extra chromosome would be a BOON, if it didnt contain a mutation of some sort within its code or just copied wrong. What chromosome IS copied twice and why does it cause retardation in the majority of cases?
