Hello, hello. I'm M-26-7 and I'm new. Enough of that, onto the real meat of this post.
I'm not old enough to have played Fallout; when it came out I was playing PC games back then just more along the lines of Hotwheels games etc. I have, however, played both Fallouts and absolutely love them. I am a fan, but I would say I'm a little less hardcore because I'm still working my way through them and have not had ten years to play around with them.
I still get some of the rage you guys get, though, when you hear about Fallout 3. I think the real problem here is that no one bothers to drop 10-20 dollars on Fallout 1 & 2 and play them at least just a little so that they might know a little about the Fallout series. But what they have put money into is Oblivion.
Oblivion only came out a few years ago and was available on current gen consoles. It also sold well and was critically acclaimed. Just about everyone knows Bethesda from this. Hell some have even played Morrowind, which still came out well after Fallout 2. The problem with them is that they think everyone is attacking Bethesda. And that's really not the case.
The anger is really aimed at Bethesda, but it's more aimed at the fact that they've merged two unique universe. Previously I had no problem with Bethesda. I didn't really like Oblivion, but that was okay. And previously (and to this day, as they know nothing about Fallout) Bethesda fans didn't have a problem with Fallout. And that's the way it should've stayed. The two games are completely different in so many ways it's impossible to list them all here.
But of course it didn't stay that way. Bethesda got their hands on Fallout and even that might have been fine if they hadn't decided to muck about with it. But what they have done instead is to take Fallout and Oblivionize it. Some might argue that Fallout's perspective was outdate, but this isn't the real reason it was changed. The real reason is that Bethesda makes 3rd and 1st person games and so they did what they knew how to do.
So here we are today and the game is about to be released (well in about 2 months) and Bethesda fans are still unable to understand our sentiments. They say "Well you just don't like Oblivion!" Maybe we don't, but that's really irrelevant we pay for Fallout, we expect Fallout.
Anyway, that just my whole view on the things. I appreciate any comments, but the fact is that I wrote this more to help organize my own thoughts on the subject. I hope it doesn't get me banned!
Finally on the topic of the game itself I will say this: I am not totally against buying it. Will I buy it? Only if the reviews are good and I don't have to go out of my way to get the money for it. If I do I certainly won't be playing it for/like it is Fallout 3. I'll play it like I would any other new RPG that has no predecessors or prequels.
