Actually possible to join the mutants in F1?

LOLJUNGE

First time out of the vault
I've read somewhere that there is a text file in F1 that shows you joining the mutants. Is this actually possible to do in the game, or was another thing that the designers ran out time for?

Play ze game.

Any information on this subject would be spoiling it.

~WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD~

If the mutants capture you, they demand that you tell them the location of your vault. If you cooperate, they dip you and the game ends with destruction of Vault 13 (and, presumably, humanity). You can't play on as a mutant. All in all, this is technically a bad ending.

~SPOILER~

I heard the original intention was to have it so you could play on as a mutant but Black Isle just never got around to it?

~SPOILER~

Black Isle wasn't involved in the production of the original Fallout -- they only developed Fallout 2.

I wouldn't think being able to play a mutant was any more of a feature than the raccoon warriors -- i.e. I doubt they actually took that possibility into account at the time they were actually producing the game.
It wouldn't fit the theme of the game -- same reason the raccoons got dropped.

No, koalas drop from trees and gnaw your face off.

Raccoon warriors got dropped out of the Fallout design document.

You learn something new every(most) day(s) I guess.

You're right, playing as a Super-Mutant was probably dropped early on in the design proccess for need of stream-lining the game. It would have been *interesting* though, an additional branch in the game to pursue.

I would hate playing as a mutant, as it would limit all but a few areas into dungeon crawling combat arenas.
