Ok, couple of things.

Yesterday I was watching Independence Day with my wife, who never saw it, and I thought about an idea for a new roleplay that is not Fallout but definitely post-apocalpyse.

The idea is that an alien species has come to earth and has wiped out most of civilization. This species is like locust that travels from star systems to star system on some epic voyage of its own. Like a long distance traveler it needs to stop everyonce and awhile for food and gas- this time they stopped by Earth.

Most of the world's population has either been killed, consumed or taken away. The aliens might have already left, but they might be coming back. They have also left a few things behind. The characters therefore are inhabiting a world which has basically been emptied of most people and animals and which has had its environmental altered. There are no towns like Junktown, Arroyo, or the Hub. There are no vaults. In fact, there are virtually no people except for a few people that the aliens missed or were lucky to have escaped. The date for the story to begin would be something like tomorrow or next year.

Those few peope have no idea what to expect or what has happened. They may have some inclining of an alien presence or invasion, but for the most part there is no coherent explanation of what happened.

The point of the story would be:
(1) figure out what happened
(2) find any people
(3) avoid nasty surprises.

What do you think?

I would be curious as to who would play, what kind of characters (should be normal folks)

I wouldn't mind playing. Might I suggest that perhaps you should have two general "groups" of sorts. Maybe the surviving humans and then the "collaborators" or those who worked with the aliens to save themselves/slave labor? It might make things a bit more interesting rather than just survival for its own sake.

Meh. This would be an ideal small RP but this would probably get too big to fit your description.

Fireblade, the way I am thinking of it is that the world is really empty. Entire cities are lifeless. I am thinking something like 1 in every million survives.

My feeling on this is that there wouldn't be collaborator and there would be very few groups.

This would be more horrorific than sci-fi. The post-apocalpytic world would have strange and terrifying creatures. The aliens have utterly wiped out human civilization - they have no need for collaborators. They were just passing through (or at least one wave has).

The humans who survive are left without much understanding of what happened or why. Their story is partially about survival and finding others, and partially about understanding what happened.

i'm not really convinced. i'll read some & i'll see if i like it or not.

i was toying with the idea of making an rp myself, but havent got the time now (or in the coming month) so it'll have to wait.

I like it, the way I see it, the idea of emptiness is overwhelming. I would like to play such an RP.

The problem here would have to be with characters and what they experience- loneliness and the first connections with other people.

This would be less about shooting other people than finding people, rebuilding life and figuring out the questions- what happened and why are we still here.

For the manager of this story we'd have to know exactly what has transpired, why it transpired and how the characters can find out what it's all about. It would be up to the characters to sort out the mystery.

Again- this would be a tightly controlled RP which gives little to the characters interpretations. Your story would me mostly divided between resolving the mystery of "what happened" and building a life together.

I would be willing to take suggestions about this from you folks. For instance- should animals be left behind as well?

Anyone interested in co-managing?

That's part of the nature of the story.

My idea for starting this would be that the characters essentially wake up to realize that the world they knew has suddently become empty.

Why? That's the mystery of RP that the players need to figure out.

Rather than do this as a typical post-apoc shoot em up where most of the characters do little but kill people and look cool, this one is actually a mystery or puzzle that needs to be solved.

So actually it might be aliens, it might not be. Perhaps we think it's aliens but its not.

I am still playing with. But I do want to play this around an idea that your characters are left with an empty world and trying to make associations with others to sort out a mystery.

Like I said, I am still thinking it through. Ideas are appreciated.

I think the characters should be normal folks, kind of a representation of ourselves, so it would be about what WE would do in that kind of situation.

Question: How have the cities infrastructure been left? Totally devastated? Are there any shops left that we could loot to get supplies?

If you need a co-manager, I'd be more than happy to help. I know I'm a newbie to this forum, but welsh at least knows that I am a v0 regular.

Well, I don't know, some parts of it sound ok, but some are... well, there's not much to do really... It would basically be a question of gathering up survivors and restarting civilization. There isn't much horror there... without a nemesis it just doesn't sound interesting. Where is the danger in establishing communities. Now if there were limited resources, rolling gangs, aliens left behind, teh evel creatures (tm) or something... I know it would deteriorate it into a shoot-em-up fest, and you don't want that, but I don't see the thrill in it.
Also, what kind of characters could you make:
Yeah, my name is Mike and I'm (well, was) a used car salesman.
Hi, I'm Vicky and I'm a midwife...

As long as you don't do it in mine.

I think the nemesis thing should be developed, at leas a bit, and not as a central par in the story, but as something that is out there, as an always present threat

Yes, I have also been thinking of a nemisis- something dark and shadowy that haunts or stalks characters, leaving them as corpses.

I have also been thinking that the characters generally share delusions or dreams that seem connected in some way, perhaps to the point that the line between what is a dream and what is conscious reality is very blurred.

This too may configure into the story.

Malkly, I will pm you about my thoughts. I don't want to reveal to much into this thread yet as it might spoiled the fun.

This looks to me like a mix of the movie "28 days later" with the comic "Y: the last man".

The first is about a man who wakes up on a hospital bed in london and finds out the town is deserted, except for what seems to be some-kind of zombie-like creatures (actually they've been infected with a virus). The man for the beginning of the movie is struggling with the question: "what happened?" and with escaping the zombies.

Y: the last man is a strange and funny comic: it's about a guy and his monkey who finds out that all men in the world are dead, only women are left.

I like the idea of the RP very much and agree with Lt. Col. Gonzalez said: why not represent ourselves and try to think what we would do?
