I thought not!

Anyway, I'm busy moving house and have been for the past week, so you won't see too much of me for about another week or two (currently I'm on a 36kbps modem, yeeeuch! I can't wait to get my DSL back)

Yeah I know what you mean. When my cable was down for a couple of days, I was sitting on my bed shaking :P
I had to use the old 56k and *damn* it felt slow...

DSL?! CABLE?!

Am I the only one here (besides possibly Dr.W95) who has dial-up modem?!

LOL....so true, especially when I have a satellite downstream that can sometimes go to 500kb/sec.

That's funny, considering that > 75% of internet users are still using 33600 modems for their access and that the internet wasn't even started until the 90's..

I'm using 56k on Netzero (cracked of course) which isn't bad. I've never had to pay for any internet access in my life, though hopefully we'll be getting DSL soon.

ARRGH!!!

Stop that! I wouldn't get high-speed access in at least 6 months (at best)!

Hey APTYP, do you live in the east USA or west? If you're in the west, QWEST/USWEST is offering, until December 31st, free activation and free modem (or $150 off a different networkable modem) for DSL lines. With the USWEST ISP it comes to around $50 a month for DSL. Not too shabby.

You might check it out if you're in the west.

If you're in the East, try out Netzero and use a crack to use it for free like a normal ISP. Despite what you would expect, Netzero (cracked) is one of the best 56k connections you can get. Remember to get the actual password generator, not the Netzero application crack because then you can use it like a normal ISP (e.g. normal Dial-Up Networking).

What about upstream?

RE: DSL?! CABLE?!

I'm going to throw a side curve under this topic for the hell of it.
Which is better? Dsl, or Cable? I've found that Cable is much better for stability and multiple downloads, I rarely get more than 80kbps off a single transfer, but I also often get an average of 60kbps with about 4-5 downloads going. I don't have dsl so I won't comment on it's usefullness

RE: DSL?! CABLE?!

I'm still stuck with a crappy 56K winmodem for the forseeable future. At least its free now.

RE: ARRGH!!!

East Coast. But I don't need 56k - I need MORE!

Ah.. but don't we all? I myself would prefer an OC-768, but, well.. I don't think I'll be getting one of those for a while.. I don't think my CPU can even transfer information that fast.

Here's the pros and cons of DSL and Cable Modem:

DSL: Pros: Constant bandwidth reguardless of how many people in your area are using DSL or other forms of internet usage. Cons: Usually the $50 plan give you only 256kbps downstream. Also, availability is related to how close you are to a Central Office.

Cable Modem: Pros: You can get as much as 3mbps downstream in some areas. It is also quite widespread as many places have the needed cables for it. Cons: Bandwidth is shared within the community. Expect your bandwidth to drop to pre-56k speeds if you have a lot of people in your area using cable modem at once. This is quite noticable during mainstream usage times around 3PM to 10PM. Usually the best time to surf is at late night to early morning.

Small town, not too many users :) every now and then, late at night, I get 320kbps :) but, some times duringthe day I only get 30kbps. we have DSL here too, and from what I know, Canada's DSL and Cable is better than most US isp services, we're the best wired country in the world or something. I chose Cable because it had free install and free first month, and it's $39 a month. I couldn't live without it
