Anyone seen that "20 questions" site?

Brutulf

Still Mildly Glowing
Besically, its a site with a program that asks you to think of a thing. Then it asks you 20 questions and tries to guess what it is. It is in fact surprisingly effective (The first time it almost got it right, guessing a "double bass" when I was thinking about a guitar, and then again when it the second time guessed "sitar" :P ), but sometimes it gets really weird results, like here

Oh, and if you get "saxophone" as result, reload until you get the other result.

Edit: And here is a link to the main site: http://y.20q.net:8095/btest

OOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!

PS: FUn, though.

Right. My object was an apple. Simply because there was one sitting on my desk next to me.
First Guess: "aubergine (eggplant)"
Second Guess: "a bush"
Third Guess: "a hubcap" :?
Fourth Guess: "a butternut squash"
The apple was in a list it gave afterwards, but the list contained roughly 20 items (including such efforts as: a football helmet, a cannon ball, a subway token :wtf: and Christmas lights). There were also a few questions that it disagreed with me on, but mostly ones where none of the answers made any real sense.

Maybe it's not as accurate as it says it is.

EDIT
Object is a banana. First question: Animal, Vegetable, Mineral etc.. -> Vegetable
5th (or so) question: Is it made of metal? Uh...No. Very few vegetables are.
Object is a toenail. Guesses Toenail Clippings, I say close. Next guess is... A bazooka. In which universe is a Bazooka even remotely similar to toenail clippings?

You would have thought that your answers would rule out other (contradictory) questions. For instance, it almost always asks "Is it hard?" and "Is it soft?". It also often repeats a question, for example: "Is it shiny?" then later "Does it shine?"
The more I use it, the less intelligent it seems.

Ehe. That's because it's a form of AI, it learns as it is used. It has been given questions, but the questions have not been interconected for the purpose of letting it learn. I don't know, though, whether learning that no vegetable can be made of metal, or that no "other" can live is part of its program. Perhaps that's part of the second version. *shrugs*

I'm a bit freaked out. First I thought of a sniper rifle, the AI guessed it was a machine gun. Next I thought of a dragon, the AI got it right away. I mean, there I was thinking my answers could mean just about anything.

Well, it did say rifles stink and belong to the cat family.

My thoughts:

* sextant - detected (1st try)
* pop can - detected (1st try)
* a coelacanth - detected (1st try)
* umh... that part of a woman that makes it a woman - detected (1st try)!!!
* intestinal bacteria - ha, I win! pwned, biatch!
* kidney stones: guessed it in the big list (no sooner than it offered me chicken pox and a splinter)
* a button: "Does it have lots of buttons?" Hmmm...

This thing is the devil's seed.

It'll reach critical mass and take over the world, I tell you!

Elf - 1st guess (not a single question on pointy ears). Coffee - didn't exactly make it, but offered cappuchino and tea.

I told my brother to give it a try, and he picked the online soccer game he's playing. I thought it was a bit abstract, but the AI came up with computer icon, anime and then finally computer game.

I posted the link on a mailing list and it turns out the AI could handle "slide ruler", "conscience", "dandruff", "mosquito", "sneeze", "moon" and "joy" all on the first attempt. It made "invoice", "contraceptive" and "thermostat" in two attempts. Also it guessed rubber duck for rubber penguin, but I suppose that's fair. Failed "author" and "Klein bottle", though.

Also I just tried "fallout", but it isn't in the database. Closest it got was "smoke".

I tried "radiation" it guessed "carbon monoxide", so it was pretty close. Seeing some of the answers it has logged for radiation, though, I can understand why it couldn't guess it:

Is it found on a desk? I say Probably.
Is it used by the police? I say Yes.
Does it have legs? I say Yes.
Is it straight? I say Yes.
Does it have eyes? I say Yes.
Does it have a hole in it? I say Yes.
Is it part of a set? I say Yes.
Can you buy it? I say Yes.
Does it fit in your wallet? I say Yes.
Is it worth a lot of money? I say Yes.
Is it crunchy? I say Yes.
Can you recycle it? I say Probably.

lol

It got computer game pretty fast.

It guessed kryptonite when I tried dilithium.

Sometimes it's got really weird ideas, I think people fool it on purpose.
It didn't understand that a carrot is partly green.

And it doesn't know that machine guns are older than 100 years. It did get it though.

1st try:
-Polar bear
-Dragon

Eventually got it:
-Pants (said shirt at first, took another 10 question to get pants)
-Bomb

"No way, José!":
-Mercury (it said Black matter (cosmical))
-Corkscrew

but fun game anyway
