Arcanum: how to remove my familiar?

i need it either to wait or be removed from my party for the isles of despair pit. and i have no clue whatsoever how to do it. when clicking on the avatar the option "wait" is grey, so not much to gain there. i have removed all other party members (leave party, not "wait"), but the quest does not continue.

arcanum runs with the latest unofficial patch.

ah, and while im at it: the cemetery in ashbury quest... i am unable to find the entrance to the 3rd level of the dungeon. 2nd level is quite small-ish, but there is no lever, entrance, or anything around. there *should* be a 3rd level...

Should there be? In Ashbury all you have to do is fetch the crystal from teh ground on the second level of the hallways of the dead.

hm damn

i saved before the pit with all my npc standing around. i told them to leave the party, which seems to be an error, because when loading i still see them standing around, and within a second, they all disappear. do they re-surface somewhere? i am not sure if i have all the questitems, i gave virgil most notes and letters.

as good as the game is, sometimes it annoys the fuck out of me.

edit: talked my way out of the fights, collected my party again (they stand where you picked them up in the first place). still no clue how to put away my familiar.

You can not order a Familiar to just go away or wait for you.
As the guide says: A Familiar "will remain until killed."

IIRC there are only wto ways to get rid of a Familiar. For good, that is.

(1) Ask the rest of your party to wait for you and go into the bushes with your Familiar. Now kill it with your own two hands.

Don't do this with your partymembers, 'cause some might get really upset with you and start attacking you instead. Or they might leave you. Whatever.

(2) Use Disperse Magic on your Familiar and it will be destroyed. I don't know if your other party members will see this as a violent act, so save before you try this.

As for Ashbury: I don't remember how many levels that cemetary building has, but finding the entrances to other levels should be a piece of cake. Just hold your mouse pointer over everything you see (besides crates and so on) and when it lights up, it's probably the entrance door to the next level.

Also: from personal experience, I know for sure that not all partymembers return to their starting points if you had them wait for you too long. Some do, some remain where they are (this happens a lot to me in Caladon) and I've also had some disappear. Save before you have them wait. The game gets quite buggy sometimes.

disperse magic sounds good, ill try that. i cannot attack him directly, believe me, that was the first thing i tried.

What do you mean 'you can't attack him'?

You mean you're too weak and he whooped your arse or you don't know how to?

You have to force-attack friendly characters: ALT + Click (similar to how you open locked crates when you don't have any lockpicking skills or demolish doors, etcetera).

It's just a creature you can summon. Like a Guardian Ogre, but tougher. Unlike most summoned creatures, though, it doesn't disappear after the spell is canceled.

that is correct

right now, my party consists of virgil, the dog, and my familiar. just owns. attacking it is considered a hostile action towards my other party members.

Yeah, that's why I told you to have the rest of your party wait for you somewhere.

Anyway: have you gotten rid of it now?

yes. and i attacked it for the sole reason within reach of my party to see how the would react. i still dont know why i didnt come up with the "forced attack" thing on my own.. possibly i was distracted or something.

oh look! something shiny!

also,

edit: better put this one in the order, i gess. /edit

Would either of you recommend the purchase of Arcanum? I can't seem to find any real crpgs (hack-n-slash shit is everywhere) and its either this or Baldur's Gate (Sad, I still haven't gone through that one yet either).

I haven't either, even though I still have it installed with a savegame right at Baldur's Gate (big town near the end) after having cleaned up everything else. It's just so goddamn boring I can't bring myself to finish it.
It's sorta like a hack n slash. There's not much to it other than combat.
The difference is that BG's combat is incredibly boring, where most other hack n slash games have fast paced combat that keep you interested.

You should definitely pick up Arcanum though. I've only played through it once so I don't know that much about the different paths and such, but I thought it was excellent overall.
Besides, it's Troika. You HAVE to play it for the cRPG street cred. :P

duh...

how fucking long have you been on NMA? ffs, you should know better than to ask such things.

Hah, I know I know.

I had played the demo way back when, but I couldn't find the old disk to try it out again. My memory of it is a little fuzzy, and the reviews were offputting.

Looks like I'll be picking it up today (4.99 used? Yes please), already have the patch+unofficial patch lined up.

dont forget that you can switch between turnbased & real time. (this is badly balanced, so you can use this as a cheat sometimes)

and think of the crashsite as Arcanum's rat cave ;)

Just gave it a look (made by Drog Black Tooth right?) and running it in 1024x768 sounds great, but does it break the game? Some posts made it sound like that patch has problems with a number of scripts that call on what is currently on-screen. Have you experienced any of those problems, or have they been resolved (I can't find a straight answer on terra-arcanum).

*edit*

Pshaw, turnbased all the way

Also; installing arcanum right this second. Can't wait.

I would strongly recommend limiting yourself to Arcanum + patch 1074 when you play the game for the first time.
The resolution patch does have issues. My game freezed in Caladon and the last save game was corrupted, so that wasn't fun.
Drog Black Tooth's unofficial patch and extra pack seem to be okay, but again: it might be more fun to experience the original Arcanum first before altering the game. I for one don't like all the additions modders have made. Some are okay, but others just make the game more complex when there is no real reason to do so.

I like Arcanum just an itsy-bitsy tiny little bit better than any of the Fallout games, but that's probably because I'm a sucker for Steampunk settings. In any case, you won't find another game out there that has more in common with the Fallout games than Arcanum. So yeah: play it and enjoy it. You will almost certainly not regret it.

Cheers.
