are there any guys coming from outside of US?

Here you can buy a 1 liter bottle of hard booze (the traditional brazilian pinga, roughly equivalent to tequila os vodka) for about 1 Euro. of course it tastes like cleaning alcohol, but hey, it's the alcohol that matters right?

there was a foreign beer commercial that said: "Life is too short to be drinking cheap beer" or something along that line. (it could be carlsberg, although i'm not sure)

i'd have to agree and expand it to alcohol in general...

i'd rather chip out some extra cash and drink something good

I saw this guy on TV once and he was explaining how drinking a good, but a bit more expensive beer is cheaper than drinking cheap beer when you are on the beach. The whole point was that poor beer makes you piss more often and the money you spend going to a public restroom will more than cover that extra cash that you could spend getting a better beer. [/end rant]
Anyway I am from Romania.
Hmmm... maybe we should have a poll and see how every country/continent is represented on the forum. Maybe just add a poll to this thread.

you wanna compose a poll with over 300 possible answers? good luck mate, dont think an admin is smart enough to fall for that one... ;)

I was thinking more along the lines of continents, maybe major areas, like splitting Europe in Eastern and Western. That would not be hard.

Carlsberg is an expensive beer, but it's not really better than any similar, cheap beer.

I saw this tv program here in Denmark where they had three "beer gourmets", or whatever they're called in the studio. They did a blind test on three beers. One from Carlsberg, one from Vestfyen, and one from Tuborg (I think).

Now, all these beers are pilsner beers (which seems to be the only type of beer we're able to mass produce in Denmark), but Vestfyen, as opposed to the two other brands, is a cheap beer. It's about half the price of a Carlsberg or Tuborg. The funny thing is that two of these three "gourmets" elected Vestfyen to be the best beer, which just goes to show that if you buy an expensive beer (at least if Danish), you're paying extra for tha brand, not the quality.

One of the master brewers at Vestfyen commented, saying that all the master brewers were trained at the same place, used the same methods and raw materials, and that it couldn't really come as any great surprise that the three beers tasted almost the same.

That being said, I'm not so sure about booze. I prefer to drink something that I'm at relatively certain won't make me go blind.

And by the way, Macaco, a liter of cleaning alcohol in Denmark is about 1 euro, so I'm not so sure you win. :D

I'm from Canuckasthan.

btw Wooz is america's worts nightmare...half mexican from chiapas and half french...living in polishland.

hmmm i think it's a bit of a waste of "the ocean" if you're at the beach and go to a public restroom....

Well let's see here,

USA/Canada
Mexico/Central America
South America
Western Europe
Eastern Europe
Scandinavia
Russia
East Asia
MIddle East/North Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa
Southeast Asia
Oceana
Australia (nobody cares about New Zealand)
EDIT: and India

Got enough poll options for that?

I object to being lumped in with the UJ and his rabbid pack of canucks.

Other than that, I've seen longer polls on these boards.

now that you mention it, the slogan might have been from Tuborg and not Carlsberg.

yes many pils beers taste alike. yet there are very small differences that give it more character (at least here in belgium). there was a time where i could tell the difference between Jupiler, Stella Artois, Maes,... dont know if i still can though.

however, there are a lot more kinds of beer than just pils you know :)

Denmark here. Land of booze and beer :D (after all - you only need to be 16 to buy alcohol in the supermarkets and stores; although 18 to 21 to buy at pubs and clubs)

except you guys charge way too much for your booze... whats the use to be able to buy alcohol when you're 16 if it costs you an arm and a leg?
<snip>

Well these days you can buy a cheap bottle of booze for about the same as 2-3 Big Mac menus at McD. - So expensive or not - that is relative. It is cheap for us danes compared to what we pay for other goods - Denmark is generally an expesive country to live in.

Actually in my yonger days I was quite adept at recognizing the different beers. I once managed to identify 8 out of 10 beers at a party. For instance - I can't really stand Tuborg, so I can taste that amongst most other :D

But I'm a vodka guy, so I rarely drink beer anymore.

Even though that experiment really didn't prove much, it's pretty much given that whatever brand-product you buy, you pay a bit just for the name of the brand. Having that said, most major brands in general get their name for a reason. No one would buy Levis jeans if they broke all the time, nor would you buy a Rolls Royce if you weren't convinced that the extra money you spend compared to purchasing a Mazda actually gave you something.

As for beer, there's a pretty damn big difference between fine and fugly ale. I say that fine ale in general is worth the extra money, no doubt. The cheapest 50 cl beer you can get here is about 1,1€ (Sofiero), and most finer brands are around 1,6€. I'm no rokcet-scnientist, but I do believe that the main reason why people drink beer is for pleasure. Why not spend a lousy 0,5€ on enhancing the experience of a gross beer you force down for the alcohol in it, to a moment of pure enjoyment + getting slowly but surely more intoxicated for each ale you wet your whistle with.

Don't disrespect beer, man.

Having that said, most major brands in general get their name for a reason.

Usually that reason is marketing. But I agree that often, an expensive beer will be better than a cheap one. However, in my experience, this is seldom the case in Denmark (although we do have a couple of really shitty, cheap brands), but as I said, we mainly drink pilsner beer in Denmark, so there really isn't much divercity on the beer market.

When I want a really good beer, I usually go for an imported Belgian beer (hoegarden is my current favourite), but as these tend to be very expensive my budget doesn't really allow any major drinking binges using these kinds of beer.

On a sidenote, I find it funny that shitty vodka, such as absolute and Smirnoff, is more expensive than stolichnaya (in Denmark at least). This is purely because of marketing, and I'm sure that most people will agree that stolichnaya is a superior vodka.

I don't mean to nitpick but people buy a RR only to affirm their social and financial status, same thing for say a Rolex. Surely one can find watch that is precise and durable yet it does not benefit from a well known name. Same thing for the jeans. I have only worn jeans that had names I had never heard of before but none of them failed to serve their purpose, and they endure even until this day.
Back to our beer: around here there are quite a couple of brands of beer that are both good and cheap. Question is: what do you want to be seen drinking: a cheap beer or an expensive one? Think of what that says about your status. Cheap does not always mean poor quality just as expensive does not mean quality. Think about it.

i agree about good beer, what i was defending was cheap old booze, you know, distilled shit, the ~48% alcohol vol. ones. In these cases to get something really good you have to spend at least 20 times the price of a cheap one. i think this falls in the rolex category.
