Are we better prepared for the future (wasteland) ?

Claude Frollo

It Wandered In From the Wastes
As we know that all of us folks have some character abilities and skills too. Are post apocaliptic games preparing us better for the future in comparision to other normal people who do not play post-nuclear games or who do not ever touch the games. Are we mentally better prepared to survive in the possible wasteland of the future after the third world war ? Have we improved our skills through all these games ? Especially through Fallout Series (Priorities are Fallout 1&2)

Do we have better chances to survive ?

Did we improve our surviving skills ?

maybe, but we aren't going to survive to use all these "game-knowledge" if there is a nuclear war someday. First we're going to take shelter, and lots of us aren't going to make it, so, bye bye 60% of the humankind. Then, we'll have to wait 20, 40 years until the nuclear dust disappear. Good probabilities that lots of us dies in this time. So, maybe post-apocalyptic games are preparing WE so we can prepare our children.... Or maybe not. I still prefer to rely on a good "Manual of Survival in case of Nuclear War" from the government or some private corporation than in a game that is not so close to the reality to teach my children how to survive out of the shelter.

Maybe we can use these "game-skills" if we turn in ghouls , but if I were you, I'd not count on it.

no. because basically nothing you've learned from the Fallout games can be applied to a similar real life situation. are you suggesting we know where to find a power armor and bozar and thus will survive longer than others?

Finding a super weapon and a super armor is not the worse.
he is suggesting that we can plant dynamites in children that rob and we'll know how to steal oxygen tanks from people who need it and are in our way.

actually, I'd say we have a smaller chance of surviving. all we do is sit in front of the computer and play the same games we played 10 years ago. our physique most likely wouldn't hold up against the tough environments of a post-nuclear world. while people who don't devote their lives to a computer game probably do some sports so they're better fit for it, plus they have other skills that will help them that they've picked up from their rich and meaningful lives.

Personally I wouldn't put much hope to us surviving if that kind of cataclysmic event happens. Im not naive enough to think that I would be that special to be spared by radiation or diseases.

I know for a fact that I'm a goner in a nuclear war-- without access to Pharmaceuticals, I'd be toast inside of five years after the fall. I'd like to think that the knowledge I pass on about such things as sheltering protocols and purification and foraging techniques would allow those close to me to struggle and maybe even thrive if I survived the initial blast and chaos, though. This is knowledge I would not possess were it not for Fallout: the game started me on a serious post-apocalyptic kick, which in turn made me crack more than a few books on the cold war, survivalism, and large-scale disaster. Some of the knowledge-- not to drink water that is too clean in a potentially irradiated zone, for instance-- came DIRECTLY from the games.

So I'd venture that yes, at least indirectly, playing these games may have upped our chances. The curious ones, anyway.

the game started me on a serious post-apocalyptic kick

I understand absolutely what you said. Although Fallout didn't give me any real knowledge, thanks to fallout, I read various survival manuals.

But I think this is kind of useless to me. Here in Brazil, probably the max that could happen here is the nuclear winter thing, but, I don't see why someone would detonate an atomic bomb here, not in any near future. Who knows how the world is going to be in 20 years, but, for now, my nuclear survival knowledge is useless :/

Well, you have better chances of survival if you don't give a 10mm SMG to your buddy while wandering in the wastes  .

i doubt the games are preparing us for anything...

if you want survival, try starting to shoot IPSC/three-gun and take up camping & trecking as a hobby.

then join survivalist forums on how to prepare your foodstocks, building resources, etc.

funny thing is though, that if you're too well prepared, people will know and you're thus more likely to get killed off for your supplies.

lulz...

I think some of you did not get the question. I did not ask this : Should we play fallout to increase our skills ? No.

I asked if they increased our skills a bit. For example in the game though you do not make a physical excercise reading guns and bullets books increases your skill. So why not playing fallout did not increase our skill a bit "surviving after nuclear-war" if we survived the first strike. A bit skill increase I mean kind of %4-5.

And fallout does not only consist of bozar or advanced power armor.

Of course, trekking, mountain climbing, shooting and so on would increase some skills but at least through these games we will be mentally prepared. Moral is very important. We will have higher moral in the wasteland.

Yes this is my opinion a bit but not complete.

Conclusion : Playing fallout absolutely increase our skills even we may not find bozar or advanced power armor

I work out and do other things. Computers are just a nice device that i can play fallout and use google on. (oh and sex these really awesome english and polish dudes. Furries ^,,^)

Radiation isn't all that bad. It really isn't. Yes it will kill you if your a moron, but if you learn beforehand what produces what kind of radiation, most of your radiation woe's go away.

That fancy NBC suit I know at least four of you have in your closets? It doesn't block radiation(well alpha, but everything blocks alpha!). It prevents you from tracking it into your dwelling if properly used.

Radioactive water? Really its the fallout thats suspended in the water you have to worry about. Filter it.

Dust? Everywhere right? Highly radioactive? Guess what? The more radioactive something is, the faster it's decay rate. Within weeks you'll be able to walk outside (assuming your a male of average height) for short periods of time.

If you have knowledge, stop and think, you will survive. I would be most concerned about food. You can't hunt, animals can't filter dust out of their water. Can't eat plants, plants will soak up contaminants from the soil.

But believe what you will. Doomsayers won't make it. More canned food for me! (and ammo and whatever else on you thats useful.)

Wasteland now !

Folks, is there anybody out there who would exchange his present life with a life in the wasteland like in Fallout games ?

If you choose you will be given:

-1 month food supply
-Two weapons of choice (1 rifle + 1 pistol)
-Ammunition
-Geiger counter
-Pipboy
-Combat Armor
-Dogmeat (or any other dog or cat you wish)
-Friend of your choice, can be your best friend or girl friend

If you choose your present life you will be given:

-Fallout 4

anyone who would give up his life for such an adventure is either retarded or insane...

:drummer:

Hehehe.

While the Fallout setting might be nice to fantasize about, I'm sure it would be hell to actually wander through it yourself.

I really, really like air conditioning.

Besides, I already have all of the stuff you mentioned above, plus a refrigerator containing both beer and ice cream, and I don't have to worry about pesky things like radiation poison.

discarding fallout 3, in which traveling is a very fast thing, I imagine that traveling for 2 weeks under the sun, slowly getting more and more irradiated to just get to a small town and encounter food and water shortage, damned kids and torr-like persons isn't my dream.
And hell, this is where you spent most of the time: traveling under the sun with the fear of being robbed and killed.
So, I even with all these bonuses you're giving, I prefer to stay here hahahah
