Hello there, for those of you who haven't met me, I am known as Shawn Hype, I'm a scripter for the Mutants rising team.

I've come to the conclusion that beggining scripting for this game is a nightmare, not neccessarily in tha scripting language itself (although that does have it's own idiosyncrasies) but just the setting up and figuring out of how usually presents a few problems (even with ColJack's excellent tutorial).

What I'd like to do is perhaps facilitate as many of you experienced scripters to help me perhaps compile a document of "you should read this before you start scripting" to completely remove the gray cloud that is over most people's head so they don't have to endlessly surf different forums looking for answers.

I'd also like to perhaps get some more tools in developement specifically for scripters or to make parts of the scripting process possible for those without much experience, like perhaps a dialog tree tool or some such thing.

And for those popel who have had or are having problems scripting, what general knowledge would you like to impart or request?

Have I perhaps just missed this wonderful document somewhere and it actually exists? Are there tools like that out there that maybe i missed?

If not, I'd like to get some people together working on this. Anyone?

I am actually going to make a help file like that when I have the time myself. It's been on my mind quite a time now, but I just didn't have the time. Now it looks like I'm going to have some time after all, so I'm trying to combine that with FPE making. I'm making it in .chm - Windows HTML help format. Maybe we can merge our works later when they're +/- finished.
 
Any help/tutorials you guys make, we can put on NMA if you would like.. just email me or pm me..

i realize this is an old thread and that scripting has now been facilitated greatly by the tools and turtorials which have been released. i used to used a java one (it was great, can't remember the name though, sorry) and now im using fse (even easier to use). i just have one recomendation, a dialog only tool. fse is great for dialog, but what im saying is that if the people who are used to making small mods (like weapons, item or map mods) were given the opportunity to easily create dialog trees they'd be able to expand their worlds and do some good things(like making more mods to play). im not suggesting something which would manipulate all the intricacies of scripting, just something to create simple harmless dialog. i myself know only enough about programming to cout "hello world" and that's about it. so if you are reading this and think it sounds like a good idea then you might consider doing something about it. well that about does it. thanxxx.
 
Well, some time ago, i was thinking about such prog, but then i start work on FSE.....
Dialog Creator in FSE is not ideal but it can do nice dialogs.
Maybe in next ver i add a small additional tool to make (very easy) simple dialogs.
But i still think that most dialogs will be made by scripters.
 
I agree, I was just suggesting a dialog only tool for non scripters. It was just so that even the most inexperienced modders could hit the ground running. But after careful consideration, I now think that if you are going to mod then you should know at least a bit about scripting, and script-less dialog might end up being counterproductive.
