Audio problems on gaming pc.

Mr Fish

Slippy sloppy, The
Posted this in the discord but figured I'd post here too:

So I've had this issue on my gaming PC that I just kept postponing and never dealt with but now I decided to get around to it and that is that my audio is weird when it comes to playing videos or music, be it through musicbee, VLC or youtube.

The audio sounds... Muffled. Games have no problems what so ever. And since it is my gaming PC I don't use it for much else than playing games. But still, I want to fix it. Anyone know why the audio might be muffled whenever it comes to anything 'but' games? Also, it's the same regardless if it is the speakers or a headphones.

[edit]

I disabled RealTek High Definition Audio driver and enabled it and the audio is better now but there's still that tinge of muffling or... Something... Like when you've drunk out of one glass and then pour water in it and you can taste that other part but less so. Just a tinge of audio weirdness...

It lacks bass though.
Like, there is bass there when I listen to a song like David Bowie's The Wedding Song. But it's not 'as' bass-ey as it should be.

Tried downloading the driver and reinstalling it. Didn't work.
I also get as a suggestion when looking around online to go into the enhancements tab in speaker properties and "Disable all sound effects" however that box literally does not exist for me so I can't tick it.

What OS? Or what version of Windows? Win10?

Do you have any of these enabled?

* To access these, right-click the speaker icon in the system tray, and choose Open Volume Mixer, then click the speaker image atop the volume slider for the speakers (usually the first one).

Win10
And no, none of the boxes checked and the setting is set to none.

[edit]

The funny thing is that when I got the driver installation it first uninstalled the previous driver and required a restart but before proceeding with installing the update I tried playing some songs on MusicBee and the sound had drastically improved, however youtube videos still had this ever so slight muffling to them but nowhere close to what they were at before. But eventually the computer was like "oh, well you don't have a driver so fuck you, no sound for you" and turned my sound off so I had to finish the installation. Upon finishing it it went back to the usual muffle.

Are you doing the driver installation from the program or manually? You might need to uninstall the driver entirely, like until the fucking things looks like you are running it on an old monitor and then install it manually, I had that issue with the NVIDIA drivers a bunch of times, sometimes even losing the sound entirely when the driver was installed until I did the full uninstall and reinstall.

I suppose the former. I really don't wanna brick my computer by fucking around with things too much and since I have no idea how to do it the way you said I haven't ried.

Best bet is to get one of your more tech savvy friends to take a look at it (it is either a codec or driver issue most likely) unless you want to waste money on tech repair.

Yeah I don't either of that is happening.

Anyway, I've played Dead Rising 3 and Bioshock 2 now and I dunno if this is an issue for every game now but it seems like audio is... Missing... Like we have a bunch of audio that IS happening but then like a assault rifle in a cutscene in DR3 is meant to go brakkabrakka and it is silent.

That can be a wiring short in the speaker input or output; it could also be setting the wrong number of speakers, or not having all of the speakers plugged in.

If you have a 2.1 speaker system, and the PC is set to use rear or center speakers, then you can have missing audio.

You might try playing Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen, or The immigrant song by Led Zeplin, to see if parts of the vocals and instruments are missing.

[Confirm with headphones]

Headphones also get audio problems when I plug it into the front-audio for headphones.

Also the speakers are set to just use the 2 front facing speakers.

Tried playing Bohemian Rhapsody and there's no audio missing it just has that slight "muffle" that I've talked about before. It's just in the games that there seems to be missing audio at times.

Hmm, could be that DR3 set its sound settings to surround sound but I've uninstalled the game now so I can't check it. It would reset settings every time I started up the game so that could be why its audio was funky.

No I decided to check it in Bioshock 2 as well and there are particular noises that aren't missing but are very low. Like the Speargun makes nearly no sound and when bots fire at one another I can barely hear the bulletfire. It's there but barely. I checked the ingame settings and they're set to Stero as well.

Does it sound muffled when you login under a different user account?

It's really seeming like a custom audio effects filter. I assume the speakers don't have this problem when you use them on a portable MP3 player, or other audio device?

I don't have any other user accounts to log into.
I've checked my settings so many times and there is no filter on anything as far as I can find.
I keep seeing as a suggestion to check a box that says "Disable all enhancements" https://blog.pcrisk.com/windows/12415-how-to-fix-missing-sound-in-windows-10#disable-enhancements
But I have no such box in my settings.

I will try to plug the audio into my mp3 player and see how the audio sounds there.

[edit]

Oh it sounds way better on my mp3 player. There's nothing wrong with my speaker, gotta be the computer. Also plugged in the audio into the front part and there's no difference to the audio in comparison to the back audio input.

[edit]

So, here's a thing though. I got 4 NVIDIA Output's. Is that normal? I tried toubleshooting the audio for example and it asks which of the devices I wanna troubleshoot and I got "Speakers Realtek High Definiton Audio" then I got 4 "INVIDIA Output - NVIDIA High Definition Audio".

All 4 of those also says "The connector for this device is located in the HDMI connector."

[edit2]

In Device Manager I also got in "Sound, video and game controllers":
NVIDIA High Definition Audio
NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM)
Realtek High Definition Audio

[edit3]

So I decided to just go for something simple that I hadn't though about and just searched for "audio" in the lower left side of the taskbar and my first results was "AudioWizard" and I'm like what the hell is an audiowizard? So I open it and I have no idea where this came from, no idea how long I've had it but it has 6 tabs and the one it was set to was "War Room" so I instead set it to "Off" and the audio is different, I can't tell if it is "fixed" but it is a drastic improvement. However, I literally just uninstalled Bioshock cause I got tired of it so now I have to reinstall Bioshock to see if the audio is sorted. Anyone know what the hell AudioWizard "Republic Of Gamers" even is?

[edit4]

Ok, so got Bioshock 2 downloaded again and the flying turrets still barely has any sound to their gunfire. The Speargun got a bit more audible now though but still feels quiet. Dunno if that's how it is supposed to be.

MusicBee which I use for my music sounds pretty good tbh.

But youtube videos that I play in my usual Opera browser still has a tinge off sound to them. Like, it's hard to place but it doesn't sound completely right, as if it is off by 0.1 degrees. But that could just be because I'm so used to the way audio works on my laptop (that has a tiny speaker I plug in) or MP3.

And it could just be that DR3 and BS2 both have audio issues. It seems like they patched Bioshock 2 at some point and it lowered the audio for some things, specifically player guns. Could be that the game is just poorly optimized.

[edit5]

When I plug in my headphones and I play music it does sound off though. I can't tell what it is though... Not enough bass?

I still say it is related to RealTek because I swear it did shit like that before. Try searching along those lines.

Hey not only did you not fix this you gave Dead Rising 2 a bad review because of it? WHAT GIVES!!!!????

What? No I did fix it.
The audio issues in those games stemmed from the games themselves, same with DR2. I checked and there are others who suffer similar audio issues.

For example, playing Legend Of Grimrock, Psychonauts and Minecraft right now, absolutely no issues at all with any of their audio. Hell I even booted up Dead Rising 2 Off The Record and there was no audio issue at all.
