Baldur's Gate Series

PastaMasta

Mildly Dipped
Are these games worth a try? I'm not very fimiliar with the D&D universe at all, really. So I don't know If I would enjoy it or not.

if you dont mind old graphics and ISO camera, and like RPGs, YES.
YES YES YES.
Baldur's gate.
Which one? Baulders Gate I or II?

EDIT: And will I have any difficulty with understanding the plot, since I'm not too savvy with D&D?

Both, you can get them in collection boxes these days.
4 in 1 boxset for 20$ US, it contains expansions. Depends on your country obviously.

Also, you will have to interact with ze world.
And it just uses the AD&D ruleset as basis for the "system".

Personally, I'd skip the first BG. I remember feeling so fucked over by it 10 years ago. I bought it on the spot just because of the BIS and IPLY logos. I had no access to the internet back then so I couldn't educate myself. I actually expected something of FO quality, but instead got a railroaded dungeon crawler with blatantly fake dialogue choices and combat so passive I slept through it. Way behind its time and I'd say easily the worst Bioware game to date.

BG II is actually somewhat good, though. If you happen to dislike BG I as much as I do, know that the sequel is way, way better. Don't get discouraged by the first game.

I dont remember 1, 2 was excellent though. It is fine that you dont know anything about D&D, you will figure things out just fine and it helps that in computer games somebody is rolling all the dice for you.

Especially Baldurs 2 sets a high standard for companions, most of them have side plots, quests and events.

Do yourself a favor and get all three. Be aware that the infinity engine (which all three games use) seems to hate the GeForce 8-series, though. And, possibly, other newer cards.

Baulders Gate? Don't know. Baldur's Gate on the other hand is worth giving a try if you're looking for phat lewt and somewhat tactical hack-and-slashing.

I always kill that annoying fucker with the rat. You know the one.

This. Minsc fucking sucks.

Minsc is awesome, until he starts getting pissed about not getting his witch-charge...

Plus I love the miniature giant space hamster!

*squeek*

I thought BG1 was pretty boring (tried it after going through BG2), but BG2 was decent - I'd say about the same level as, say, NWN.

Neither of the two even compares to PS:T, which is the essence of awesome.

I tried playing BG1 but couldn't take the slow pace. Plus, I couldn't figure out how to run (was there really no running?) and it made playing a real chore. I forced myself to put a few hours into it but then any excitement I had came crushing down.

The NPC's seemed pretty interesting though and I'd still lke to know where the story goes.

I might give BG2 a shot at some point in the future but the first one left too nasty of a taste that I still can't get rid of.

Isn't there a demo out there for the first Baldur's Gate? Only the first two chapters or something along those lines?

If you can find it, it should be an excellent method to determine whether BG is a game for you.

Buy Baldur's Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast (expansion) Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn, and Throne of Bhaal (expansion).

Once you have done that download and install Tutu. It will allow you to play through the first game and expansion using the BGII engine, which includes all the new kits and what not.
The story in the game is continuous with you playing the same character in all the games and it feels very rewarding to playthrough all the games in order.

The games have an amazing amount of replayability. Your party members have something to say to almost every event that occurs or NPC interaction no matter how small and they work off each others dialogue. You could replay the game several times just to mix parties and see how they react to one another.

I used to be a bit of a Baldur's Gate fanatic, somewhere around here I have a journal where I recorded some of my favorite party interactions and quotes.

A few of my favorites.

Viconia: I miss the customs of my homeland, like the breaking in of new pleasure slaves. The largest and strongest were the hardest to break, but they were the most rewarding. Sarevok, I find your great size... intriguing.
Sarevok: Were you to break me Viconia, you might find nothing but the chill emptiness of the grave within.
Viconia: That does not repulse me as you might imagine. We drow are ever eager to broaden our... experience.
Sarevok: I orchestrated a war to slaughter thousands. I have felt the cold embrace of death. I have witnessed the horrors of the abyss. But you, Viconia... you scare me.
Viconia: Cowards everywhere I turn! If you find your courage, Sarevok, seek me out.

Korgan (a chaotic evil dwarf warrior): Nalia, ye're overtall, beardless, longlimbed and lack strength. Ye disgust me.

My favorite part in the game would have to be...

[spoiler:7a73b769ae] When you are in Spellhold and right before the battle with Irenicus you can choose to let loose all of the insane Sorcerers and Clerics to help you with the fight. Some of the dialogue there was hilarious.

(After Tiax an insane Cleric declares he rules all around him another insane girl who constantly sees visions of people from other planes says)

Girl: Is that the rule of all you survey, or beyond? What of those that walk inside, and around, and through? That stand where you stand now?

Tiax: None stand where Tiax stands lest he walk atop them![/spoiler:7a73b769ae]

Yeah I have an odd sense of humor I know, but that still gets me every time I play the game. Hearing the voices do it is even better.

On a final note, if you do decide to play all the games in a row and import your character to each new game I leave you with one tip:

Keep the pantaloons. Always keep the pantaloons.

BG1 is a great rpg, dont listen the nonsense in this thread.

Just a warning. Well, maybe it's just me.
I always kill that annoying fucker with the rat. You know the one.

Misc is the shit :D A two handed sword wielding maniac with a hamster named boo... whats not to like??

"Go for the eyes boo, GO FOR THE EYES, WAAAAAAAAA!!"
