Best games of past couple years

M-26-7

Still Mildly Glowing
What in you opinions are the best games of say the second half of this decade? I know we already have several threads that talk about how mainstream gaming has been lacking a lot of quietly lately, but certainly some good games have come out. I'm sort of looking for something fun to play because this holiday season has kind of been a let down game wise. I'm interested in STALKER; it seems like aquirky little game that unapologetically kicks your ass at times.

Hmmm, well I guess Half-Life 2 isn't in this half of the decade is it? Well S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is up there for sure. Team Fortress 2 is fantastic as well, easily one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had. Also, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, while pretty much just a refined version of every other Guilty Gear XX is still pretty fantastic if you're into 2-D fighting games. Get it for the PS2 though.

I don't really know of much else that was really great but then again I've been a little tight on cash in terms of my gaming budget.

For me:

EU3 with the 2 expansions
MGS 3 and 4
Final Fantasy X
CoD 4
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
Little Big Planet

I haven't had the pleasure of playing LBP or GT5 and I hadn't heard of EU3 (though having watched a few videos it looks good), but the only one I agree with that much is CoD4. I liked FFX's battle system somewhat more than the others, but it was just so linear, and the voice acting was just bad. I'm not a fan of jRPGs though, so maybe that's just my problem.

MGS is a series that I was a fan of, but honestly I've taken a hard look back and played them again, and it isn't that good. Don't get me wrong, the characters are fantastic and I actually like the story of the first and third ones and I still enjoy MGS1, but it just has so many problems. The controls are just awkward, particularly in aiming your gun which is so frustrating. Also, the cutscenes and dialogue just drag on and on and on... The story is also unintelligible in 4, even after having read up a lot on it and had it explained to me. It's just overly complicated and in the games the philisophical talk is just too heavy handed for me. I haven't played MGS4 though, so maybe the gameplay has just made a complete turnaround or something. I'm sort of in the minority on this game series though.

CoD4 was pretty great for the single player, but the multiplayer on the PC is ridiculous. When you have 40 or more people on a server, airstrikes are ridiculous and grenade spam is a massive problem. I've been killed by a guy who just lobbed three grenades directly up in the air. It's not as bad in smaller games, but it's bad enough that it's a pain in the ass.

Recent and good games huh hmm..

Well Portal and episode 2....
Also Shadow of the Colossus and if you happen to like ZELDA type of games i can recommend OKAMI.
Mgs3, was best of the series IMO. I also enjoyed Lost Planet but it seems that isnt too popular opinion. Stalker i have only tried out but it seemed quite fun.
Ive also heard good things about Sins of the Solar Empire and Witcher but i dont have good enough pc to try em out. I bet there are demos of those games.

Fallout 3  I'm kidding....

I played Titan Quest and enjoyed it, but um yeah, The last few yers I was playing an MMO, so I was oblivious to other games.

I'd put another vote for Stalker, best fun I've had in ages. Although some of the bugs can be frustrating, I never experienced anything that bad. The games has a very cool atmosphere, and playing in the underground labs late at night for the first time was a chilling experience. The best part is how the AI works. Stalker uses something called A-life, I think, and it governs the actions of all of the NPCs. If you raid a bandit camp, eventually, the bandits will come back and repopulate. However, there are other factions as well, and they can come and take over just as easily.

My first play through of the game, I encountered something so awesome that I just had to keep on playing. In the beginning, you start at a rookie camp, and down the road is a military base. One of my first missions was to kill a bunch of mutated boars near the rookie base. As I was traveling to the boars, I saw two or three soldiers marching up the road, patrolling. I hid behind a bush, because I thought they would shoot me. It turns out, the boars ventured to near the soldiers, and the soldiers opened fire. My PDA chimed, they had just completed my task for me. Being the greedy bastard I am, I wanted some of those assault rifles the soldiers had. I tried to kill them with my measly pistol, and lured them into the rookie camp. Suddenly, an alarm went off in the military base, spouting Russian. The camp is overrun with soldiers, and I, and the rest of my rookie friends, are bravely defending our homes. After a long firefight, the soldiers retreat, and I help myself to some much needed bandages and ammo, lots of ammo.

That fight was very, very challenging, yet so much fun. Later, as I was sneaking into a bandit camp, I saw a circle of bandits sitting next to a fire, listening to a friend play the guitar, I cried when I was done killin.

One more vote for S.T.A.L.K.E.R from me. Very atmospheric game, with great ambient soundtrack too. I recommend turning down general sound effects..
I really enjoyed a lot of more recent games, despite gaming industry's decline. Psychonauts gets a special place in my list, funniest game I've ever played, one of most unique ones too. "Milkman Conspiracy" level is a work of pure genious. Then there's of course Half Life 2 with Episodes and Portal.. Also there's a little shooter called Prey.. Despite it being a bit too easy and short it was a very fun ride for me.. A ride I repeat every once in a while. The Witcher - first good RPG in a while. Probably the only good RPG with current gen graphics so far.
If you liked Diablo 2, then it's a good chance you'll like Titan Quest, I sure did. Just don't play it without expansion.

Geneforge V and Avernum V.
Avernum made me buy a cheap used Mac just so I could play it without waiting for the Windows release, I'm glad I did since I couldn't wait for the last Geneforge installment and I sure as hell didn't want to wait for the eventual Windows version which is coming far later.

Supreme Commander
Many new features, good graphics and decent level of strategy. Too bad it didn't have much impact upon the rts-genre. Still stuck with the stupid c&c gamedesign for a decade or so.. :(

If you like grad strategy games, pick up any Paradox release, and you'll be in heaven for a few years.

As for FFX, if you don't like jRPG's, then yeah, you won't like FFX.

MGS is a series that I was a fan of, but honestly I've taken a hard look back and played them again, and it isn't that good. I'm a bit of a fanboy when it comes to MGS, so my opinion may be a bit jaded. I've loved every game in this series since the PSone days, and MGS3 is probably one of my favourite games of all time.

MGS4, if you haven't just recently completed MGS1 - 3, will make no sense what-so-ever. It was basically, IMO, a huge "thank you" to the fans from Kojima.

CoD4 was pretty great for the single player, but the multiplayer on the PC is ridiculous. When you have 40 or more people on a server, airstrikes are ridiculous and grenade spam is a massive problem. I HATE online gaming. Just hate it. I can't stand interacting with obnoxious 12 year old who think it's cool to scream "jew-nigger" into a headset.

I absolutely love CoD 4 online though. It's great.

Well I think CoD4 online can be really varied. I think you need to be playing in a smallish server to get a good experience, otherwise you'll just spawn in the middle of grenades and air strikes which is no fun.

As for FFX, I used to be ridiculously into jRPGs (never liked FF7 though) but the past 4 years I've grown to dislike them. Only ones I really like are FF8, the Fire Emblem Series, Front Mission, and FFT. That's about it.

And in terms of MGS maybe I just need to play through the first three again to get MGS4 but I just always thought that the storyline was overly complex. And it isn't like I can't handle a complex story, I mean I made it through the first five books of the Dune series (the sixth one sucked, only made it half way). I used to be a big fan though. Maybe I was a little impatient with the third game though. I still own it so maybe I'll try another playthrough.

Never made it through MGS2 though. Just didn't like it at all. I think that's the entry into the series where the heavy-handed philosophical talk was at it's worse. Even there I like the characters more than I do with most games though.

Portal

And then there is King`s Bounty: The Legend , but i only played the demo... it was one of the best demos i´ve ever played.

Everything else.... mhh.... oh yeah, Mass Effect wasn`t so bad. That`s it. Aye, maybe Dead Space, especially because of those death animations or how you call `em these days.

I really enjoyed Bioshock (although the ending pissed me off), hopefully they'll listen to the complaints on #2

Half Life 2 2004 ?
Hearts Of Iron 2 2005.
Painkiller 2004.
Max Payne 2 2003.
Far Cry.
Victoria: revolutions.
Silent Hunter III
Silent Hunter IV
Prince Of Persia T2T (darn chariot races)
CiV:4
IL2:1946
and so on.

What kinds of games do you like? FPS? Strategy? Adventure?

Psychonauts was great, forgot about that one. If you don't mind some repetitive gameplay, you'll be in for a treat of a story.

Portals great.

FEAR? I forget when that was released.

World of Goo is nice.

F.E.A.R. was released this decade I think. Really fun game, I still enjoy it. I'm really looking forward to Project Origin.

AHAHAHA HAHAHAHAH
JEW NIGGER HAHAHAH
cough...erm...umm...yeah I hate that, too alot. I kind of just hate twelve years old playing those games period, but COD4 is good on the xbox because grenade spam is slightly cut down on with less players per map than the computer version.
