Bethesda and the Star Trek fans

We usually don't cover peripheral subjects much here at NMA, but this was a bit too interesting to skip over.

Some of you may know Bethesda has published Star Trek: Legacy, developed by Mad Doc. To call the game a disappointment would probably be an understatement. To say that Star Trek fans feel insulted by this piece of hoodah would be closer to reality.

Thankfully, Bethesda has solved that problem, by blacklisting a big critical Star Trek site. From their head admin:
Yes folks, it turns out that Bethesda Softworks have taken a leaf out of our old friend Activisions book when it comes to dealing with criticism, blackball them. Today Bethesda Softworks removed the STG's link on the fansite page and all links going to STG in the bethesda Softworks forum has been removed...with no warning to myself or the staff.
A Bethesda rep had this to say about it:
Well, to start off, let me give you the official statement;
"Linking to this site is not permitted due to prior infractions of our forum rules and Bethesda's terms and conditions."

Considering the abuse you've given to devs and moderators who either work for bethesda, or volunteer their spare time to moderator the forums here. both on this site and on your own, and on your podcasts, And considering your general disruptiveness and negativity, bethesda has decided to remove any and all links to the STG.

Any post containing it has been removed, and made after today will be edited, the same goes for signatures.

I'm sure Bethesda is very sorry it had to come to this, but they believe you left them very little choice.
Funny...I thought the Fallout fans were bitter and angry and irrational, and that only rabid fans could get into a fight with Bethesda...guess I thought wrong? Read the admin's conclusion and shudder, for if Bethesda takes the wrong turns this might be us in the future:
We are the ONLY SITE to have shown this much support for Bethesda Softworks. Bethesda have literally used and abused STG's massive coverage for their own advancement of Star Trek: Legacy, a poorly designed, poorly planned out game, a game for which Bethesda are taking heavy criticism for, and they will continue to be blasted by this site and The Array for taking advantage of the good will of STG and taking advantage of the trek gaming populace.

Once again, we are faced with a game publisher who cannot take criticism, and once again the Star Trek gaming public suffers. I had a gutfull of Activision, im sure as hell not going to sit back and watch as another incompetent publisher takes the helm of this once massive gaming franchise. For the sake of trek gaming in general, its about time the readers of this site voice their concern of the blackballing of the biggest and oldest trek gaming site who have shown more support than any other trek gaming site out there.
Star Trek gamers, we salute you. Go on to the end, fight in their forum, fight on the seas and oceans, fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, defend your website, whatever the cost may be. Fight them on the beaches, fight them on the landing grounds, fight in the fields and in the streets, fight in the hills; never surrender! And even if, which I do not for a moment believe, the Star Trek fans or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then the Fallout fans will carry on the struggle until, in God's good time, we get a decent game again.

Ah well, more proof of Beth's incompetence. Goodie.

The idea of an alliance between FO fan base and ST fan base, to counter the more an more evident Bethesda ruthlessness, seems real nice. That's the potential I see in these beautiful, emotioned words.

Those Bethesda kiddies really should stop trying to program/design videogames. :?
Cant anyone stop them? They are destroying game series one by one!

And I thought Fallout Fans were Rabid....turns of ST fans are too :P

Somebody post over there that we have the same feelings, we've been blackballed, and the game is still in production!

Beth's policy is to interdict any criticism which could lower the profits.
I've learned this in the TES forums when Oblivion came out.
A lot of critical threads were closed, a lot of critical posts were deleted and a lot of critical users have been banned.
The problem there is that even well founded criticism is bashed by hyped fanboys (or company men which are camouflaged as users)or has a very short life because of censorship.
It's not a good platform to discuss positions which could annoy Auntie Beth.
And clearly they want to erase any criticism wherever it occurs.
It will be a matter of the fansites to give critical fans a room to discuss their ideas.
And Star Trek is only another step on Beth's way to FO3.
No one should think that anything will change in Beth's most aggressive marketing policy when FO3 will be released.

I tried to play that POS that is known as ST: Legacy, and it is atrocious. The Trekkies have a reason to be angry. Now I worry about FO3 even more, if they treated an entity as large as ST with this kind of garbage...

I'm having a veja du.

You know. When you see something happen and know it will happen again :D

What a bunch of cocksuckers. If people would wise up and stop buying games with Bethesda on the box the world would be a better place.

The funny thing is the Fallout and Star Trek fanbases have oddly enough always been on each other's borders.

Don't know what I'm talking about? Here you go:
2. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
by Interplay Productions, Inc. -- 1997
Windows
a.k.a. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy: Cadet Briefing
Starfleet Academy: Strategic Command

3. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Chekov's Lost Missions
by Interplay Entertainment Corp. -- 1998
Windows

4. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Starship Bridge Simulator
by Interplay Productions, Inc. -- 1995
Sega 32X

It's pretty ironic we're thrown into each others' arms again.

The "beautiful, emotioned words" were a paraphrisation of Winston Churchill...as Sander pointed out.

Like they would ever link to us.. I don't think that's anything we ever have to worry about. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right.

Well thats a smart move by besheda, just ignore the problem and it will go away eventualy ... maybe ... NOT!!!. As we love our game they loves theyres and this just puts another a fire under beshedas ass.

God fucking damn it. Bethesda Softworks is starting to look pretty pathetic, covering shit up like that.

They're not just evil - they're also a bunch of big fucking losers.

I don't know if I will be able to resist when/if FO3 comes out.... *mutters*
We need to kill the dolts at Beth with .223 pistols

Well they abused any critical comments for Oblivion, now they attack the Star Trek fans and next will be the real Fallout fans.I'd say that auntie Beth is trying to find out what a real boycott means.Ubisoft made this experience already with quite a few games(POP3, SC3CT) and now with Dark Messiah,HOMM5,SC4DA and R6:Vegas.And I think Ubi learned what's the meaning of poor sale due to bad PR and no listening to the actual buyers.Maybe Beth wants to discover that too.So like the chinese are saying: may you live interesting times.

We should send an ambassador. Does anyone speak Klingon?

Best post in the internet today! :D

Sorry for the other Babylon5 fans, but I'm with the trekies on this!

Yet the same grievances could still be avoided with our community, that's up to Bethesda and Zenimax. There are good people over there too. If not it will be our turn to DEFEAT THE BORG!
