If you're not convinced about Irrational's promise that they're making sure the PC version isn't just a console port, this is for you:
And while both PC and 360 look alike, Irrational has spent a ton of time (and used most of their Australia office staff) creating an amazing and unique experience for the PC gamer. Rethinking the HUD from the ground up and retooling the controls to work perfectly with a keyboard and mouse, the PC version of BioShock deserves its own moment to shine. Which I am now giving you.

This update includes a podcast talking about the PC version of BioShock, brought to you by the Aussie gurus who made this version a reality, a first look at PC screenshots including the HUD and other PC-specific features, and a rundown on the PC specifications you'll need to run this game, as well as some insight into how well different configurations will churn out the graphics and gameplay of Rapture.
Link: PC Blowout on Cult of Rapture.

I think this is actually good news. Having a GUI primed for console's sucks when on a PC. Like Oblivion's GUI, which on a PC is cumbersome and limited cause it was just a straight port.

Thats one thing that will hurt Fallout 3 among many other things already, just a straight port from console GUI rehashed into the PC GUI.

Still looking forward to Bioshock even if I get bored watching the gameplay movies...

That was obvious since Deus Ex 2 was released.
Kudos to the BioShock team, but the fact that they have to announce it at all is a sad state of affairs in PC gaming in general - it should be a given.

Is there really a lot of overhead developing the UI portion specifically for a platforn?

Eh, crappy interfaces generally don't bother me, just take a while to learn. Even PC only interfaces can have problems (Topical case in point, Fallout 1 and clickclickclickclicking to scroll to the bottom to get to items recently put in the inventory) but it's really nice they're making them separate. Now I just gotta get myself a new video card since they have DX9.0C video cards in their minimum system requirements. My poor old 9700pro just won't cut the mustard.

Or you could hit the down arrow...

Only problem I really have with the Fallout UI is the money thing. Fallout 2 you go flying wildly past the right number, and in Fallout I worry I'm going to break my mouse.

Well I'll be damned. All those times playing FO1 and I never noticed the down arrow was quicker than holding down the down slider in the inventory. Thanks for that.

then what hand will I use to eat/drink/touch myself whilst i'm playing fallout?

right hand firmly on the mouse, left hand firmly on MY mouse

No...? You're pushing this joke too far. It's not funny any more. I thought you were cool.

You can always enter the exact amount by typing it on the keyboard in the "money screen".

I believe it's hard to find someone doing it for PC. The most are next-gen, they work controllers only.

The future looks bright to me. Too bright. Blinding bright.

I recently played Oblivion again, without some mod that makes it a little like the Morrowind inventory- needless to say it was cumbersome.
This is good news though :)

Actually if you think about it. Oblivion has a very Fallout1-2 style inventory screen. Harsh no thrills. You just scroll down the list of stuff till you find what you need.

But they did put in Ultra-Generic catagories for your stuff. Like armor, weapons, poitions and scrolls, and the final one I call the Stupid crap bag. If I remember right been like 2 weeks since I loaded my Oblivion.

But agreed, if they need to announce such and activity as a good-'PC-port' were doomed. Thank goodness for MMO's with super large inventory containers for your "phat-loots" and Strategy games. There the last bastion of mouse/keyboard rule, and not Controller friendly-"limit the game to it" style there doing now industry wide. IMO

Ha ha, funnily enough, I figured that out about ten minutes ago, before I read your post...Weird.

Thanks anyway, though. It's arful considerate of ya..

Of course, for a game released in 2006 that was supposed to be "next-gen" that's pretty pathetic.
Even Fallout Tactics and Van Buren had significant improvements to the inventory.

Why would they [Bethesda] need the inventory improvement at all? You'll spend almost no time at all in the inventory.

A few items, many weapons and the "auto switch to better weapon" option.

Erm, that's not really a valid argument not to change something. The inventory system was pretty bad and could definitely use improvement.
