Black Screen FO1 - Will doxBox work?

Chancellor Kremlin

Mildly Dipped
Hey,

I have just installed FO1, which already came as version 1.1 I then installed the fan-made team x 1.2 patch, and then the same fan made 1.3.4 patch. However, the in game screen only says 1.2, so im not sure it may have patched correctly. Is this normal?

More problematic however, is the black screen problem I keep getting. I read the stickies, and the solutions, but disabling the video card for me doesn't work as when I start the game it freezes after the intro video.

Pressing the A and P keys do not help either as the screen refreshes like every 2-3 seconds, so I have to keep doing it all the time.

One question I have is why FO2 does not give this problem and FO1 does. Is there any way around it other than the aforementioned solutions? Its getting really annoying.

Cheers!

EDIT: Im on windows vista, and have tried using the Dxwnd application descbried in one of the tech sections.

EDIT II: Did a mod move this to the 'mod' thread? I could have sworn I posted it on the tech page. If yes then thanks. Didn't realise X-Team's patches counted as 'mods'.

EDIT III: Im trying to use dosbox with it, but it keeps telling me the falloutw.exe file is a windows NT windowed executable.

If you want only the blackouts to be fixed use fo1_screen_refresh from there. Doesn't reqiure additional setup. "Run in the backround" means: after starting fo1_refresh, leave window with french writings and a lone button intact and just run Fallout; after finishing with the game and quitting Fallout, press that lone button to close fo1_refresh.

For some extra features, like upscaling via DX9, use Sfall from there. Requiers some INI tinkering.

You know, it's pretty obvious, that letter 'w' in the filename "falloutw.exe" means "Windows".

Name's TeamX. And our patches are counted as 'patches' at the Files section only. [fixed. Per is a boss :)]

However, the in game screen only says 1.2
Yes, it IS normal. Since patch 1.3.x makes no changes to the engine. An it's relatively easy to check if the patches are installed correctly. Go to Shady Sands, manage to get quest for busting radscorpions' lair and then talk to Katrina at the settlement's gate. If there be string about Tandi's kidnapping instead of radscorpions' quest then patches installed incorrectly.

Hey Thanks!

That worked perfectly. There are some small glitches when the overseer is talking to me in the cutscreen, but that is about it, the rest works fine.

And yeah, its been a LONG TIME since i've used dos... forgot most of the abbreviations and the commands.

Finally, I get to play FO1 again! Thanks once more!

You are welcome.

Glitches in Overseer's cutscene, AFIR, were there since the very beginning. May be DOS based engine running via emulator could fix that but we don't have proper binary right now. So all TeamX's patches currently are windows only.

Anything that's not released by Interplay is a mod.

Thanks Per, I'll keep that in mind in the future. Also, your walkthrough's are awesome. You rule.
