Brainstorm

APTYP

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
This topic will probably get little or no responses because it weeds out "oh that'd be cool" kind of responses, but still...

If you were to be designing your own "post-nuclear" role-playing game set NOT in Fallout universe and decided that the game should be original enough not to be considered Fallout 'clone' - what cool un-Fallouty twists and ideas would you put in the game?

Feel free to post all kinds of crazy shit, and don't think too much about how it will all be incorporated in the gameplay (then again, people rarely do, hence akimbo pistols etc.) You are not designing a game, it's a brainstorm of cool ideas.

Some of mine:

- Firearms are actually used as clubs because there is no ammo around.

- Things that are valuable today (jewelry, money, electronics) are so useless no one will even buy them ($0 price), even though they are relatively easy to find (looting pre-war stores in local necropolis). Like you can find a case with 500,000 dollars in it, but it's completely useless.

- Not every mutant is a horrible freak. Some have superhuman attributes (not "mutant superpowers"!) that give them an edge in trying to adapt to the environment. They can be leaders or spiritual guides in place of their settlement, and will be highly sought-after by the women who want to have their child.

-No electronics work anymore, gotta love those huge EMP-blasts. No more electronics, AT ALL. No power either, unless it is through a silly little hand-made power-generating machine.

-No lasers, plasma or any of that type of stuff.

-Guns can still be used, ammo is rather plentiful, but most people don't have a clue how to clean and/or fix one. In other words, if you use a gun, prepare to blow your own face off.

-What's left of old towns will all be almost entirely uninhabited, radiation, gloominess and total destruction are what you will find there. ONly the most rural areas will have SOME habitation.

-Not every freaking country in the world will have been bombed, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and other western European countries will have survived, the nuclear blasts all came from and were aimed at nuclear superpowers, not at other stupid countries that can't do anything with it. As a consequence, you might find people from those countries scouting the destroyed countries, and find out that they live in "pacts" (Western European Pact, South American Pact, African Pact etc.)

I would like to see a Post-Nuclear world with a lot more division and racism between the people. Not saying myself to be a racist but I could see in a civilization thats torn to the ground, people would grow very strong bonds with a small group, and view all others with hatred. But then, I'm reading Swan Song right now and that book seems to reap with racist flares. Either way, I think a lot more division and hatred between groups would be cool in a Post-Apocalyptic setting.

Another thing I'd like to see would be more nomadic scavenger type people. Of course, I'm thinking about a world only a year or two after such a war as scavengers would probably run out of stuff to scavenge.

And lastly, variety in households! After a post-apocalyptic war, most buildings are going to take a lot of damage and will either be rebuilt, or people will make new different houses. And by different I mean a building that is crudely built so that it keeps the rain out, and it stands... but thats about it.

Well, thats it for now :). Basically I like my post apocalypse locales to be desolate. I'll be back with more coolness ideas after I get my summer reading done.
