Brian Fargo on Wasteland Reboot

IGN has some more comments from Brian Fargo on the idea of a crowd-funded Wasteland project.
He doesn't know if it'd be straight up called Wasteland 2, but he repeatedly emphasized that, despite having thought about it for only 48 hours, it wouldn't be a crazy genre change up. Wasteland, whatever its called, will be "100% faithful to its roots." This means a Wasteland game that "would be focusing on top-down, probably isometric, party based, skill based -- where if you'd just finished playing Wasteland and moved onto this you'd feel comfortable."

(..)

The big thing Fargo emphasizes, that the fans are often missing, is that "this process means we don't have to do it like the publisher wants." Fans on the boards are worried that the project will start out looking like a hardcore, old-school Wasteland title, but eventually turn into something more "mainstream." Fargo says that they don't have to worry about "will [the audience] get this or get that," they can just be "more like the old days...totally creative."

I would explode puppies like blood sausage for a new Wasteland game.

Or possibly reduce kittens to a thin red paste.

Good luck. I try to get the original box since years (which does not cost 100+ dollar).

As Lexx said, good luck. Pretty much impossible to find it nowadays, unless you have lots of money to spare. Even Interplay's 10th Anniversary Collection or whatever it is called can be quite expensive on various online auctions.

You can easily find it online, though. It is abandonware .

I don't want to get too excited about this but, this sounds pretty awesome so far.

I've tried Abandonware, but it sucks. First of all, there's the Commodore 64, PC and Apple versions and it turns out they're all different. Second of all, I'm not sure about the game actually saving on the DOS-Box. I don't even know all the controls (I didn't know you can zoom on the map - as I had reached the first town, I was so confused because it's so small, plus a tutorial on the game mentioned macros) and I need the .pdfs for the texts.

Unless someone gives me advice on this, I doubt I'm going to install the game and go through the same pain again and again.

I'm right in the middle of my Wasteland playthrough, and I have no big problems with the game. F(a)ormerk helped me at first a lot, so here's what you can do.

You should download PC version of the game. After extracting, you'll find both Paragraphs and Manual files among the game files. Manuals is run in Notepad, and Paragraphs in Wordpad, at least for me.

Of course, you need DOSBox to run it.

There is no problem with saving - I have encountered none. However, there are several bugs I've encountered, but those can be easily circumvented.
You should check Per's walkthrough which is very extensive and helpful. Check the Preparations first.

That should be it. Although mentioned by Per, I'd like to point out few things that caused problems for me:
1) Don't use the mouse. It is clunky and caused DOSBox to freeze for me. Just use the keyboard.
2) Every now and then make a backup of save (game1 and game2 files in the installation folder).
3) Be sure to read the manual and consult it and the walkthrough whenever you encounter a problem.
4) Watch out for the "disappearing shop" bug. It is easily triggered by the player, and is very frustrating, not to mention game-breaking. However, being a "trigger" bug, it doesn't appear spontaneously, so it you can circumvent it really easily. Follow Per's instructions on that one.

That's it.
As for macros, I don't know how to make them. There's an explanation somewhere, I've read it actually, but I'm to lazy to look for it again - so I don't really use them. But you should look it up.

PC version ran perfectly for me under DosBox, at least back in 2007. Not even mouse caused any problems. So, I must assume Wasteland is perfectly playable by now.

I tried once to play wasteland but give up quickly.
Mainly because of the graphic on my huge screen, i'm really not very exiging about them though and i like top down view. I remember playing BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception not so long ago and i did not have such problem.
A remake would be great, it does not need to be very nice, just the level of a spiderweb or basilik game.
I will give money for that or a sequel !
Damn gonna try again to play wasteland.

The first thing you must do when trying to play Wasteland for the very first time: Read the fucking manual, man.

So, there is still some sanity in a game industry? Good luck, Mr. Fargo!
*fingers crossed *
*foot fingers crossed just for sure*

Switch the DOSBox to run in window.

With an escape button macro and some canteens, you can rest quickly on the scorching desert 2 squares west of Vegas. Very little is encountered out there.

If any of these kickstarter projects (Fargo's or Obsidian's) comes out and fully commits to TB combat I'll back it...and back it well. But as far as I'm concerned its: TB or GTFO.

Damn, I'm stupid. I've read up on the manual and now it all makes sense. I've tried Per's guide too, but I decided not to follow the Character Creation (not really roleplaying, you see). Now I know the controls and I can explore the Wasteland :)

Thanks, man. Finally I can play the game properly.

Not trying to change the subject but all this talk about the prices of original copies of wasteland has made me curious.

How much is the PC copy worth?
I have a still wrapped copy of Wasteland and its guide.

I think it is 10 dollars or so. I'd pay you 15! :>
