Calculon is back and just bought Civ 4.

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Yeah, so I'll tell you how it is once I finish installing and give it a try. It looks cartoony to me, but maybe the gameplay is crazy awesome.

So expect a title change to this thread once I try it. :D

I eagerly await a review since I'm pretty skeptical about buying it myself after the mess that was Civ 3.

I want to try and play the game some more before I put a full review here, but here's a screenie to show you guys that the graphics aren't all bad. The detail they put into the cities is awesome, not just from a graphic standpoint, but a gameplay standpoint too.
For instance, each city keeps track of what percent population is a specific ethnicity and religion. The game has about six or seven real world religions that the citizens can be. Each city can also be a holy city for any or all of the religions.

It's also worth noting that ALL city improvements or combination of any inprovements will completely change the city layout and add a 3D model of that improvement into the cities' graphic.

This giant metropolis is made from about 8 cities grown into each other. This was made using the map editor.

After adding a few cities, expanding it, and then figureing out how to rotate the map:

@ Calculong: Thanks for coming back and even better posting a game review everyones curious about.

Thats nice they specify everything about a city even if its an ugly sprawling city where the combined farts of the people for green tentacles that writhe into the sky.

@ John Uskglass:

The one possible advantage to a city that large would be the fact that any (in real life) attempt to capture it in a conventional army-to-conventional army face off would result in massive losses for the agressor. Bad for the defender, but not nearly as bad.

Well, I spent today going through my first game of Civilization IV. I have to say, it is surprisingly good. Though that it is only a first impression, and I think another few plays will be in order. However, my first experience was good enough that I am not reluctant (with Civilization III, my thoughts were constantly “it has to get better than this.”). I did fall back on my older Civilization strategies, so I didn’t take full advantage of the new aspects to the combat system or religion.

Unfortunately, it's two o'clock in the morning, I really can't write much more right now. So, I will get back to it, perhaps with some more experience with it.

One trivial thing, I liked the music quite a bit.

My first complaint is I don't like the overall looks very much. Now I've played a second game, and zoomed out, and that seemed to help, making it seem not so cluttered...somewhat. The 3D graphics are not awe inspiring.

My second complaint is that the battleship and destroyer cannot bombard other ships or land units (like in Civ3). Only bombardment abiltity they have is to destroy a city's defenses...that's it. Bombers however, have a button called "air strike", which pretty much allows them to bomb units, land or sea. I'm sure this may be able to be resolved through modding.

Combat bonuses aren't what I thought they'd be. Example, a destroyer having extra power versus a sub.

Graphics: No where could I find the game graphics. Not that I'd want to copy them anyway, but I'm looking at where would I add my own. Again, the move to 3D doesn't impress me. The units are as predicted, low poly and blocky. This is most noticable in ships where they should have smooth curved hull lines, but not in CivIV. I suppose that would eat up alot of processing power.

Now if you visit CFC, you'll read alot of Fan Boy reviews claiming how great CivIV is. However, I haven't come across any unit maker or mod makers reviews yet. There will be people who like this game, and that's great. As for me, and my tastes, I don't like what I've seen so far. Maybe in a year after people have been able to tweak and mod it, the game may be more like what I was hoping for.

Artillery in CivIV is fubar...or the use of. Arty now only has bombard against a city's defenses (like the BB or DD) but no bombard against units in the open. Back in ancient and medival times, seige weapons were used soley against fortressess and cities. However, in modern combat, arty is used against the enemy, preferrably outside of a town or city (too much collateral damage if used against a city). Arty in CivIV goes head to head with enemy units now. That is just silly. Arty is always kept behind the front to support the troops, whether it's a 155mm Howitzer or a MLRS. In spite of the "combat bonuses" in CivIV, I feel they somewhat went a step backgward with certain combat units.

It seems in the world of video games, some developers don't know how to keep the things that work untouched while attempting to make improvements in other areas. They seem to think they have to wipe the slate, and redo everything. I do not like the combat and, to a lesser extent, the graphics in CivIV. Although, I feel the AI may be noticeably improved in CivIV.

Now there are reports of the game crashing with Geforce video and ATI Radeon video cards, but this is unconfirmed at the moment.

I have been saying all along that Civcraft was going to FUBAR the Civ franchise. They are trying too hard to get in the RTS crowd, so dumbed down and removed the things they should have retained or made just a bit more realistic, the combat system, removing city unrest and pollution. It seems firaxis seems to think all those Love Canals and East German industrial wastelands no longer need to be cleaned up. And it seems they also think that unrest is no longer a concern.

The modding is going to require you to be able to modify the python scripting language, which rules out any casual modding unless you are a programmer. Then the units HAVE to be 3ds max models, which once again rules out most of the best civ unit makers that are currently making units. :x

Sorry for the long post, but I am far from impressed by civ 4, as it seems most folks are once again impressed by the blocky low poly units and buildings, sorry but that is the last item on my agenda.

Really? Because a large fraction of your post seems devoted to the graphics, and to how much you dislike them.

Gee, Kotario, I thought most of my displeasure over civ 4 seems to be pointed at the combat system, and I do see from your post you are one of those the graphics are cool crowd so I would expect you to change the focus of my post.

And I suppose you like the powerups for the units huh? Yeah lets make civ 4 more like the RTS games out there.

As a civ modder I have to focus on what is going to be needed in modding, and unfortunately, in civ 4 you have to take into account the 3d terrain and low poly count models. :x

No need to get nasty Comrade. Accusing Comrade Kotario of being a graphics whore of the West is akin to calling Comrade Ratty an American Republican. Quite rediculous really.

*Why just the other day he (Kotario that is) was extoling the virtues of Pong. "Its graphics are quite unlike anything else available" he said. "Truly this is a fine example of gameplay over graphics" he commented later. To which I replied "While you were talking, I just scored 3 times. With your mom. Do try to keep from being so easily distracted"

But I digress. I will probably secure my own copy soon, but its disappointing its given the modding community the cold shoulder. No chance of seeing your Rebirth of Civilization mod carried over?

*Events never actually occured

I've been meaning to watch Blade Runner. Haven't gotten around to it yet.

Watching that movie should be mandatory. Do watch the director`s cut first, and remember a new "secret version" is rumoured to be released on dvd in the last...two years now... i really wish they would just release the damn thing.

Is there really any evolution on Civ4 or are the changes dumbing down stuff exclusively?

The game can fail to run in the first place if you have an ATI card. There's a work around which involves unpacking a game file. It's all quite simple and is explained in depth here...

http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/support_ati.htm

I've only played the tutorial so far and so haven't experienced as much as most here but the game certainly looks to have some amazing depth... it's certainly come a long way from humble beginnings - but I'm not sure that's a good thing.
