Car problem. Not usual one.

First time out of the vault
Hi guys, I installed RP 1.2 couple of weeks ago and started playing it some days ago and it's just gorgeous - many thanks killap ! ; ) However I seem to have trouble finding my car ("Dude where's my car?", anyone ?).

When I started doing NCR quests I had my car parked on the bazaar, I then went to the guy in the junkyard (the last chronologically possible car upgrade) to upgrade it, and then left NCR (forgot where I went, nvm). After coming back I got a message from this guy "There she is, the claudia is all installed" or so and my car wasn't where it's supposed to be.

I went checking almost every map where I could possibly left my car and it's nowhere to be found. Any help on this matter or FAQ I missed is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Per, but how do I get the car back ? As I can't really find the info anywhere ? : )

I'm not sure how the quest has been implemented, but check the local crime scene. You should be able to get some information from the car watcher if he's still around.

I'm afraid there's nothing more Doofus can say aside from his regular lines. I searched FAQ's, your guide (which I'm really a fan of), some other boards and still nothing. If it's a bug I'd love to know it, maybe killap can help out ? But it seems he didn't read my post yet ;)

Anyways is there any other way to get my car back in the game ? Like a trainer or something ? I'll do that if anything else fails.

Well, basically it goes like this:
If you tell Doofus to sod off when he offers to keep an eye on your car, stuff will be removed from your trunk to a tempbox.
They will only be removed between 1.00 and 7.00 am and you have to be on that map.
After your stuff has gone missing, you can pay or threaten Doofus to tell you what has happened.
Then you can go and confront Merk about the whole thing and buy your things back, or alternatively threaten him to get them.

This is a bit bugged though as you can talk to Merk any time after you have pissed of Doofus and demand your stuff back, whether you have talked to Doofus about it first or not, and you can even do this before anything has been stolen.

Anyway, the car does not get stolen, just items from your trunk.

There is a bug where you can lose your car at the Vault 15 location. If you have it there when the map changes (shortly after you have made a deal between them and NCR) it will be lost. Could that be it?

There is no trainer that can give you the car back, but you could put it back in with the Fallout 2 Mapper if you know what you are doing.

I'm aware of that bug and I'm pretty sure I did the quest that you're referring to, AFTER I "lost" my car.

Can you instruct me how exactly can this be done (step-by-step)? I'd be really thankful ;).

I never said I know how to do it
Actually, it isn't as simple as I thought. It's not only about the art.
I put a new car in a map and the game removed it when it loaded that map.
Maybe can do something with vad's save editor.
If you could upload your save somewhere I can take a look at it.

I know this is a little unlikely but any chance you went to New Reno before losing your car?

If you did that's probably where your car was stolen.

I know this game in and out and I know of this too So I'm afraid that's not the issue. The T-Ray's upgrade was on my car already when I entered the NCR, and there after talking to Ratch about installment of the latest upgrade and leaving map, it dissapeared.

So, like Darek said there is no game design reason why your car would disappear at NCR. New Reno is the only place where this can happen.

However, I'm not aware of any bug that would cause your car to disappear at NCR after upgrading it. Definitely no reason why it would be caused by my RP either.

I'm take a look at your save and see what's up. Give me some time though since I'm a bit busy at the moment and I'll have to create a separate RP 1.2 install since MUCH has changed for 1.3.

I recall reading through some .msg files of the NCR courtyard (entering area anyway) and there was some dude that was suppose to do something with your car or something. I will check this, soon, but for now I can't.

Soooo... here's your car back. :)

Global_var 633 (car_placed_tile) had got messed up (wrong value).
The car was pretty much in your save all along, but the game just couldn't place it anywhere.
Dunno how that could happen.

Thank you, Darek ! Much appreciated : ) ! Would you tell me how did you accomplish this ? I'm kinda interested. I understand it required editing the files, but how, what tool and so on ? Anyways thank you again :) !

You're welcome. :)

We'll you can forget about the Mapper for this. The car does not work the way I thought it did.
I thought the game had mistakenly erased the car and that you could simply put it back in.
But all that is handled by map scripts for each location that checks a few global variables and then decides what to do with the car.
I used F2se (vad's save editor) to check what variables had to do with the car and thought "Gvar 633 (car_placed_tile)" sounded interesting.
I compared it's value to a working save of mine and just tried to use that value in your save.
Started the game and exit and re-enter the map (to let the map script create the car) and there it was, the car.

This was really simple, just had to figure out how the car works first.

Oh, and the reason I said there was no trainer that could fix it, was cause I thought there wasn't.
F2se has an option to choose on what map the car is, but unless you also set the correct tile location in Gvar_633 it don't work, so I thought that function was broken or not fully implemented yet.

That's very informative. I wouldn't figure it all out by myself, I guess ; ). Nevertheless, many thanks !

A bit of gravediggin, but I'm sure its all good. :)

Playing through with RP2.0.2d and just lost my trunk in New Reno. Nothing new I guess, but I thought all the car headaches had been fixed with the uo patches.

Threw a quick glance at the GVARs with the F2se, but didn't see any named "Oi! Change this var to get your TRUNK back."

So could this nifty little editor be used to bring the missing half of my car back? If so, which variable do I need to mess with?

Happen to have a save game so others can see this?
