Crashing in Combat

There is a bug I've been dealing with in both Fallout 1 and 2 that I can't find anything about. It occurs during combat mode, usually after loading a game over and over again. During some random time in combat, the game freezes, turns black, makes that windows 'error' sound, and crashes. The screen stays black so that I have to CTR+ALT+DLT it.

This is circumvented (most of the time) by saving in a new slot and loading that slot before continuing with the combat.

I'm not computer savvy, but I"m running Windows XP with an NVIDIA GeForce 7950 card. That's all I know. Any ideas?

Saving in combat after a party member dies would cause this or something similar.

True, I've had that happen as well. But the thing I'm talking about usually occurs in normal combat when either no one is dead or only enemies are. I'm not sure if it's related to the size of the battles or NPCs on the screen, or maybe even if it has to do with having programs (like Firefox, etc) running in the background when I play the game. I just haven't heard of anyone having anything similar.
