Creating Fallout-3 soldier

Defonten

First time out of the vault
Hi All -) I thought it would be a good idea to create a character from my favorite game – Fallout. I really love this game, it’s universe, it’s philosophy and the main idea of it. Post apocalyptic/ nuclear war theme is really huge and is definitely one of the most interesting and breathtaking themes for today and I decided to create a 3D composition that would express my feelings about this, express things I imagine thinking of characters living in that world and interacting with it. So this is the first two step of my work - modeling & texturing. Though I’m on a big commercial project now I hope I’d have time to finish this. I’d be great to hear your suggestions and critics of course!

P.S. The most exciting thing about creating Fallout soldier is that no one have any exact and precise visual information about it’s uniform or life-support mechs except soldier’s facial structure on a game’s cd cover. So I decided to give some freedom to my fantasy. Hope you’ gonna like the result though it’s not final -)

Man, that is indeed some awsome modeling work...buteh...sorry to say, it isn't really how the advanced power armour look(I assume that's the one you're modelling)...still, great work, man. The textures are real cool to :ok:

Great work Defonten - that´s a new power armor design right there :)

Textures are equally as impressing as the model . .

Tho, there is one flaw - it might go a tad too much after the power armors of FO2 and FOT. The tubes on the helm, the overall design of the "face" part etc.

Great work. Really.
Enclave influences, no doubt.
But yours look more insect-like to me.
A mixture of Batmans postmodern leather jumpsuit and the Enclave armour.
Looks less metallic but more like rubber.
I like it though.
Wish I could have da magick to do stuff like this...

really nice, but i gotta go with alec. it just doesnt look solid... looks flexible, not something you'd expect heavy metal alloys and armor to be.

although a point in your defense is that current state of the art are starting to go with flexible materials instead of metal plates. so this might just be a very advanced flexible armor (with just the "power" exoskeleton being solid)

Thanx man! The point is that it wasn't APA I wanted to create. I tried to imagine more advanced armor, more flexible more mm.. modern and not too heavy.

Thanx!! I am really pleased to hear that! Texturing indeed takes much longer than even modeling -)

2Melchoir

Wow! -)) You gotta be Sulik's Brother -)) Thanx man -)

It's really great to hear such words! Thanx a lot! And yes, I was thinking about mixture of APA and something more flexible like an advanced leather or some kinda polymers and stuff. It's 2324 year so why not!? -) I tried to imagine wearing APA Mark II from F2 and found it it a bit mm.. heavy -) A person wearing armor must feel himself comfortable and ready to move smoothly without any difficulties. So I leaved intact the main concept design of APA MII and then was totally led by my own crazy fantasies about it -)) Thanx again guys!

A little constructive criticism (sorry to blast this, I'm just kinda in the mood)

Powered armor is just that , powered armor. It supports its own weight and more due to the micro-fusion reactor powered servos in all the joints, so... bulky? Yes. Heavy? No. From what i saw in your rendering, it didn't have any obvious support structure. In order to support itself, it needs to have a pretty solid support structure.

Onto the flexible protective fabric stuff... it really doesn't belong on PA. I know lots of people think Kevlar is a miracle fabric... that it can stop a bullet from hurting you without slowing you down... nope... it still hurts like hell, and leaves a nice big old bloody welt and a bruise up to a foot wide (depending on shooting distance), not to mention broken bones. Its there to keep you from dying... thats about it. The fabric armor in use today is to keep weight down, but since we are talking about basically a powered exoskeleton, thats of little concern.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for artistic licence... but it doesn't look... fallout-ish enough.
Ok, enough ranting... its 4:45 in the morning... I'm going to bed.

Thanks for constructive criticism! It was very interesting to hear your opinion about this. Well let me explain and clear up some details.

due to the micro-fusion reactor powered servos in all the joints, so... bulky? Yes. Heavy? No.

It's just about that - I didn't want to "use" servos and other mech-stuff in my version of Armor. I mean relaying on micro-fusion reactor powered servos might be a good idea for soldiers defending an exact location so they could have specialised service and umm.. First Help if damn servos stop responding or simply stuck from dust -) What I had in my mind - a wanderer, a man who is today in Modoc and tomorrow in Broken Hills, and it's not only stinky Geckos who he meets on his road :) And it's not just my fantasies - In Fallout 2 there was an exact example of soldier wearing Powered Armor that stuck from dust or rust whatever.

The fabric armor in use today is to keep weight down

Well, who was talkin' about "today" -)? We're talking about year 2324 -) Who knows what that damn engineers would invent then -) And.. yes I DO know about kevlar not being a magic suite, believe me -))) I was actually talking about different "yet not invented" material that would not be so heavy and service-dependant -)) It was really fun to walk in new Reno streets and hear people saying "A walking refrigerator..Now I've seen everything" but in "Real Post Apocalyptic" circumstances I'd prefer more flexible and light one. Anyways, your criticism led me to revise some details in models geometry. Once again, thanks for your opinion, WarMonger!

yeah, I got that after a while :P

It looks amazing, but as others have stated, not very practical.

You should reduce the tubing and remove the massive "collar" bit.

Also the radioactive badges seems out of place, on the Adv. PA it's only used on the fusion reactor itself, not as eye-candy.

Apart from that, I'm blown away. I wish I had your talent.

Yep you right, may be It's a good idea to draw some scrathces and dirt from bullets, claws and napalm instead of lower pair of Nukes -) Thanks for constructive advices Torpedo!

Thanks! Really , I'm pleased to hear that :)

thats impressive stuff def. did you start on paper or did you just jump straight to it? The collar around the head and the head itself are well developed but i think take it back to the drawing board for the abdomen and the limbs. I know you wanted to go for a smoother, simplistic look, but at the moment it seems like hes only wearing a shirt and 2 pairs of pants underneath. try developing the whole 'metalic plating' sort of look (like you've done with the collar) over the entire body. its just a sugestion, i could never do that. respect to your work =]

Yes, I started sketching on a piece of paper -) It's difficult enough to draw in 3D without any visual information. I prepared the RIght and Front view of it and then started modeling. 'Bout Metalic plating, yeah I will definitely modify some elements of Armor! And thanx for estimating my concept -))
