Crusader Kings 2

eaten by a grue.
I know there are a few Paradox fans around here, so I thought I'd post a blurb since there's a demo of Crusader Kings 2 now.

This is the first game in years I'm tempted to buy at release. Based on the demo it's the best Paradox game I've ever played. I can't say enough good things about it.

Crusader Kings has always been the Paradox title with the most RPG elements, and the new one continues that tradition. You play as an Emperor, a King, a Duke, or a Count. You can murder your wife. You can sleep with your son's wife and have a bastard child. If you marry a new wife and have a son, she might try to kill your heir from your previous marriage.

The funniest thing is that if you have a vassal you don't like you can appoint him Court Jester and really piss him off.

Strategy-RPG: a much better mix than Action-RPG.

I am considering getting this too. I like the court politics stuff.

The more I play the demo, the more I like it. I'm still not convinced to buy it right now (although I'm still considering it, which for me is saying something), but I can't wait to see what it looks like with a couple years of expansions and modding.

I was playing the Conan de Rennes, Duke of Brittany. Luckily he had a son right before he died, because he reigned a mere four years. His sister Havoise inherited and became Duchess, and I finished the game with her. Her two sons were older than her nephew, but they were from her husband's de Cornouaille dynasty and not de Rennes, so she named Conan's son her heir to keep the title in the family. When the de Cornouaille sons became adults, they started trying to undermine Havoise and her adolescent nephew. Ultimately her best option was to have the brats assassinated, which she did.

If you have a disagreement with the Pope you can elevate one of you loyal bishops to an Anti-Pope. Then you have to fight it out to see which one ends up being the legitimate Pope. What a great game.

Sounds awesome. You should support the devs and buy full price. Waiting for price drops does not do well for niche market games. Tis why I bought and am enjoying Jagged Alliance: Back In Action.

That's a good argument and I agree with it, but on the other hand I don't feel any obligation to pay more than I have to. I feel more loyalty to myself as a discriminating customer than I do to any game company, and I'm not in a rush. By buying CK2 at all (which I definitely plan to do) I'm supporting Paradox's niche. In contrast, I won't ever touch something like Diablo 3; not if you paid me to take it would I accept that kind of mistreatment from a game maker.

If I do break down and buy it I think I'll get a boxed copy.

FWIW, I've decided it's more fun to play as a Count than a Duke, King, or Emperor. You get to scheme your way up the feudal ladder.

Oooooooh how I spent ages of time on CK1. How I had spun tales in my head of the dynasties of inbred, half-retarded Prussian Polish counts that I guided to become emperors of the Byzantine Empire.

I've bought it (with the money Steam returned me from the cancellation of my Jagged Alliance: Back In Action pre-order :) ); and I am looking forward to playing it like you wouldn't believe. As soon as I manage to finish my current Hearts Of Iron III game where I'm conquering the USA and a powerfull China at the same time in 1947 as Germany. The rate at which German, Chinese, American and Southern American soldiers are dying in the mountains of southern China and the cities of New England are staggering...

I so love these Paradox games. There's truly no company like them: while their games tended to be buggy on release (that seems to have changed drastically since their last two games), they have the fragile art of improving upon previous games without destroying what made them good and special down to an artform. I own every single one of their games, and I'll be buying and playing their games untill either they or I die.

If only I had more tiiiiiiiiiime!

Heh I'm sold. This sounds like an untapped gaming bliss for me.
Still enjoying the fuck out of Jagged Alliance Back in Action. The game starts out kind of easy and simple, but gets more complex as the time goes on. I really hope some genius modder comes out with some modding tools to open this game up. I see massive potential.

I've been burned by Paradox enough times to know that you don't buy their games until well after the first patches have come out.

Take my word for it: CK2 is by far the most polished release they've ever had. I've been running the demo for a week now without a single crash. It looks great, plays great, and runs smooth...best Paradox game ever.

It'll get ever better once the mechanics for playing muslims and pagans are added.

I bought this and I must say: WOW.

I didn't play CK1 (CK and Vicky are the only two Paradox games I didn't play) but I'm having a blast with CK2.

If anybody remotely enjoys grand strategy with some politics mixed in, pick this game up!

Yeah, it's really good. CK1 was great too, but CK2 is incredible. Best Paradox game ever on release. Once it get's expanded and fleshed out a bit, it'll be truly amazing.

The 1.05 patch looks promising and the new "character / coa editor" DLC looks neat too.

It's all I've been playing. Easily the best PI game on release and probably the best strategy game that'll ship this year.

Personally, I've given CKII way less time than it deserves because I'm still hooked on Victoria II... :'(

Paradox games are those kind of games that make you look at the clock and go GOD DAMN IT'S 3AM ALREADY!
