Really itching to buy this game: http://store.steampowered.com/app/203810/

Has anyone tried this yet? Looks pretty awesome! Haven't seen a source engine game look THIS good! Wow!

Depends of what you want and expecting, I'm not even sure if Dear Esther can be called "a game".

There's no sense of winning or achieving something, but there's a sense of progressing through a story and understanding why things happens.
The world is beautiful and the exploration is great, albeit somewhat linear, but not in the sense "let's kill something with our generic [insert gun here] in the generic dungeon, with the generic orange or green walls".
You really need to get into for being able to trully appreciate it, I kinda like it, but some people will definelly not.

Either you will love it or hate it, I've found the proposal interesting.

Remember, it's not a game, it's more like a visual novel. I was too lazy to research, so I bought it thinking that it's an adventure game. It's not a game at all. You walk around, look at the pretty graphics and trigger short semi-random bits of a story. That is all. I wish Steam had given accurate genre information.

The story and atmosphere are all nice, but I would rather read something like this on paper.

The atmosphere in this game(or whatever you wanna call it) is what really tickles my fancy. I haven't seen anything like it. But I think I'll wait for one of them huge steam sales.

Yeah. I remember it being a mod, if I recall correctly, and it really doesn't strike me as something they should be charging money for. Maybe if it gets down to a few bucks.

Why not?! The devs have put some time and effort into creating it haven't they?

$10 for like 2 hours of practically no interaction? No thanks. I could spend less to see a film on the big screen.

Yeah and you can only see that movie once with the ticket you bought, you can play this forever.

sorry if this isn't worth money then why do any of you buy movie?

Yes, because it makes sense to compare video games to movies when you look at return of money put in.

Look, different people valuate their spending differently. I don't buy skinpacks either. I'm not spending 10 bucks on a two-hour video game, let alone a non-interactive one.

No I'm comparing it because you wont pay for a 2 hour game, but you will pay for a 90 minute movie that you only see once in a theater.

and hell DVD's and Blu Rays are more expensive yet.

So yeah I don't know what your problem is.

And I'm saying that logic doesn't work. I can pay as much for a good meal that I'll eat in a shorter time. For a DVD I'll watch over and over. For a film I'll only see once. For a classical music concert I'll only sit through once. For a book that will give me hours and hours of entertainment.

You can't directly compare different media like that. Even if you could tell people how they should valuate their money, as you're trying to (rather than just accept that for some people this isn't worth the money), you'll have to do so by comparing it to other games, because that's what it is. And as a game, this pricing does not attract me. And since it's my money, I won't spend it. Does that meet with your highness' approval?

When I go to a movie my expectations are that of a one-way medium (the movie is shown to me).

When I play a computer game it should be a two way medium (ie: it shows me stuff but I control stuff as well).

This "game", based on what I've read in this thread, is like a movie.

When it is offered at 75% off (which, based on Steam's history is inevitable) I'll snag it and enjoy it then.

exactly.

As BN said compare games to games. Not movies or books which have all a different value.

If a movie would charge you 50$ compared to all other movies which only cost 5$ then you ask your self "why has this such a high value?". It has to offer you something in either beeing a special box or some kind of limited edition etc.

Same with games. Compare the value of this game with other games.
