Devil May Cry

Still Mildly Glowing
Has anyone played the new Devil May Cry game yet? I'm a fan of the series and kinda want to play it, but I'm a bit skeptical of the new developers. Do you think it will it be any good or will it just be a fail like FO3.

It depends. On its own is a good game but it falls waaay short in terms of combat compared to DMC4 (and in some way even DMC3). And of course there's the change of art style, atmosphere and so on.

Before you decide keep in mind that if this game underperform Capcom pretty much said that they'll return the series in-house and with the old Dante.

That said, the demo is available so why don't you give it a try?

Lol seriously? Way to encourage your fans not to buy your game.

it may be because its never really been a big seller from what i can tell, so they are having others give it a try to see if someone can find that "winning formula" that will sell millions of copies.

if not, then they will just do it themselves and accept that it wont be a series/game that is the next "call of duty" or "halo" franchise.

Why do you have alec's avatar?

OT

I actually thought this game was cancelled, after all that negative fan reception.

I thought that avatar looked cool. And none of the photos on my computer worked when I tried to upload them.

Stealing another's avatar is punishable by death.

Protip, don't steal an avatar a prominent mebmer of a forum uses.... people MIGHT find out, you know?

Fine I might take it down. I'll just steal one from someone who more noob than me.
But on topic, I guess I'll try out the demo. Can only cross my fingers from here

My impressions from playing the demo a few times.

-PS3 gets the short end of the stick. Shocking I know. Framerate during cutscenes is headache inducingly bad. Thankfully during gameplay the framerate is solid but there's some screen tearing and I don't think it runs exactly at 30fps.
-There's no manual Lock-on and it's a big, big loss. The automatic lock-on while not terrible it's far from great. I clocked only 2-3 hours of play and a handful of times I ended up mid combo targeting the wrong enemy. Bleh.
-I don't like the Devil Trigger at all. In the previous games it gave you extra options for your combos, here is basically an overpowered God Mode that charges slowly and drains quickly making it more a Panic Button mode.
-Guns are crap. For some reason they don't synergize with melee combat very well (testament to that is how little they are used in all the gameplay videos released so far), they are extremely weak, the Rainstorm startup is very slow and due to the control scheme buffering a charged shot can be more problematic than in the previous games. A big loss for Gunslinger lovers like me.
-Controls are responsive but obviously not as responsive as the previous games. Also, unless I'm doing something wrong, you can't jumpo cancel out of any animation. The hell?
-Air combos are pitifully easy.
-Style Meter is broken. The only way to lose a rank is by being hit, you can stand still as long as you wish or use only a single attack and it won't go down. Easily exploitable.
-At the end of the levels you are awarded a score according to stuff like damage received, time and amount of collectibles hidden in the stage. Once you collect all the collectibles in a stage you won't need to find them again the next time you play, which in turn helps lowering the time needed to complete the stage. Terrible.
-The demo has four difficulty levels (the final game will have five). The third is pathetically easy (enemies commit suicide at the first?) while the fourth is much harder (not exactly hard, though), because
enemy waves are remixed and among them appear color coded enemies (...) that can be hit only with some of your weapons. And I don't mean that the other weapons deal less damage or something, attacking them with the wrong weapon makes you recoil and open for attacks. Because in a game without manual lock-on and that is supposed to be about free form combat this is such a wonderful idea.
-Weapon clashing. If you hit the enemy when he is about to hit you you'll repel its attack and leave it stunned. The window for the clash is waaaaay too big, though. Mash the "spinning scythe" attack and you are all set. The boss battle is a piece of cake.

So...yeah?

Wow thats a lot to adjust to. Especially the gun play. Not the guns!! And I thought making Dante look like Harry Potter from a distance was bad enough.

Wow, read another one in another forum. If you make a bazillion of style points you'll get an SSS at the end of the level, even if you got all Ds in the other categories.

If a recent leak on 4chan is correct, then
-Sparda shows up for 10 minutes, helps Donte get into Mundus's house, than dies unceremoniously.
-Donte kills Mundus's children and wife and then kills him by force feeding him his dead family.
-Vorgil is secretly a full demon and betrays Donte (which everyone knew was gonna happen) and transforms into, I shit you not, something that resembles Trogdor.

But wait! There's MORE!

-After Vorgisaurus is killed, it is revealed that this game's universe is a parallel dimension to the original Dante's dimension and that time-traveling demons that run off the tears of children (seriously) are running amok and that a team-up between Dante and Donte is suggested at the end.

Part of me hopes this is false because it is mind blowing how stupid this is, but the other part hopes it is true because it's fucking hilarious at the same time.

To be perfectly fair, that was the case with Nero in DMC4 as well. I don't think I ever really used the gun for him.

The sad thing, as usual, is that the PC version will *maybe* be released in some undefined future. In other words, if the console version doesn't sell bazillions, they might decide not to bother with it at all.

I use it all the time. I've mapped the guns (both for Nero and Dante) to L1 so I can shoot and charge all the time. The guns are a bit weak in DMC4 nonetheless but DmC is waaaay worse. A guy made a comparison video and it takes three times as long to kill the weakest enemy in the game compared to the Lv.1 non-Gunslinger guns in DMC3.
