Difficulty levels in FO vs FO2

I haven't ever played both games one after another, and noticed the difficulty of FO2 is much higher than FO1, at least in the beginning.

I had no problems playing FO1 beginning to end, only died a couple times due to lucky, critical shots. Then using basically the same character, with the same stats, I couldn't even make it throught the temple of trials. Freaking ants killed me. I'm sure I'll adjust quickly enough, but it just seems like Fallout 1 was too easy. While Fallout 2 is too difficult, at least ine the beginning.

Yeah, Fallout 1 is easy. Try playing Fallout 2 on Hard mode and play Iron Man style. No saves unless you are done for the day... Stick to your choices and mistakes. That really gives the game a real touch.

That's usually how I play. O'Course that's why I'm still starting over, and over again getting killed by ants.

Fallout 1 was pretty tough the first few times I played it back in '97, but now it's a cake walk. I used to run out of ammo, now I don't even pick it up after a while.

i noticed a huge difference as well......but its been soo long since ive played fo2 that i cant really say from experience anymore.
my fo2 disk developed holes in the data.....there were spots that i could actually see through the disk.......

I do remember dying a few times in the temple though. One of the things that i didnt like about Fo2 was the pipe rifle.......I HATED THAT THING.

I'VE NEVER USED THAT THING! :D

BTW, I'm thinking of including some difficulty increasements in my Fallout 2.0 patch, but there's the problem of finding the balance between keeping it a patch (instead of mod) and removing items/making more difficult enemies/etc.

As I recall, Sharpened Spear was the ultimate melee weapon (of those that don't use ammo) in the game. That is, it did the most damage.

Ah...the sharpened spear.
I remembered using that weapon quite a lot as a melee skiller. Ah good times.

If you put the Fallout 1 settings to easy its too easy. If you put them to the middle their ok.

In Fallout 2 though the easy settings make for average difficulty. I remember dying in the temple of trials with a decent character. It should be slightly easier and I mean ever so slightly.

As for the pipe rifle...it may have sucked, but if your small guns skill was high enough at that point in the game (you made it your tag) it was either take the crappy weapon your character knows how to use or go hand-to-hand and if you didnt have a character built for H-to-H your better off with just the pipe rifle. Also I loved the idea for the weapon since I find it super-realistic for the games setting and theme.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Well in my experience even a untagged melee hit with a spear is better than that stupid pipe rifle........however you are right when you say that it is perfect for the fallout world......but its the only homemade gun so it doesnt truely fit.
The pipe rifle would fit well in BOS............enough said.

In terms of being the kind of character who uses exploits at every points, FO2 is much easier, due to the fact you can gain heavy laser weapons, and 2 sets of power armour immediately after leaving arroyo.

Ya but it gets really hard if you try to beat the game with a Diplomatic type character. you will be saving after every ant you kill ...... :P

Meh, most of my characters are ranged combat diplomats, and i have never had to big a problem. I usually just run to the end, talk down the Warrior, then run through the door.

Never ever died in the Temple of Trials. Usually kicked it after Den, getting jumped by Robbers or being foolish enough to enter a cave filled with Robbers. Bastards seemed to always get me. If I had the Magnum Revolver I was usually safe.

Sometimes I think the temple of trials is absolutely a "temple of patience"...Newbies would learn that saving and loading is an important part of the game through it. Well, I learnt it there anyway.:D

It was the first random encounter that killed me while I was armed with the rubbish spear and I had a diplomat character. I was hoping for firearms before that. I actually used the pipe rifle that game. I don't think I ever did after that.

Never died in the caves either. Always played a character with at least 8 AG, so I could use the "hit-and-run" tactics after my first "free" turn, and never even got scratched.

Louisville Slugger? Super Sledge?

Last time I played the game, it was to be an iron man role-playing game with some extra starting equipment. Since my character was too scared to take on anyone (you could get hurt!) and too sane to perform Fed Ex quests, he had only levelled up one or two times after the Den. The first random encounter after that had a cave, which I stepped into - only to be immediately blasted by those improbable robbers.
