Do you want to know anything about China?

Hmmm, I'm not really sure how to get into contact with him. He was always closely affiliated with the IVPP (Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, in Beijing)
I also found out he is 79 by now, but people of his kind of energy might very well continue working into their 100s

a quick bio:

I find fascinating that he helped pioneer dinosaur research in China. Lands that were - for many years - marked by marches, soldiers, civil war, was turned into treasure-hunts for ancient dragons (it is something I hope will also, some day, happen with the Middle East, where the dry, arid climate is perfect for fossil preservation)

I have found out his name in Chinese and then got to know details about him, it seems that he built a little house in Lu Feng, Yunnan and claimed that would be his last project. He should be healthy as he still went to Hong Kong for a dinosaur show last year. He is called "Chinese Dragon King" by the media, I will try to get his contacts by searching and thank him if I succeed.

The photo above was taken in 2013, he was giving a lesson to the workers of the Dinosaur Park in Lu Feng. Looks very energetic, eh?
PS: It's nice to know a great Chinese this way

Indeed he does, and heh - the only thing I know about Lu Feng is that a whole lot of dinosaurs are known from there (all of them from the earliest Jurassic period), so, a fitting place for him to retire (as well as a fitting name he has recieved from the media!)

Yes. And there is a huge dinosaur park in Lu Feng, last year I didn't go there because it is a little bit off the way. If someday I go there, I will take a few photos for dinosaurs, and maybe the "dragon king" still lives there?

After some thought I believe I have a question, now first of all please don't take offense to this as I am genuinely curious.

How common is dog and cat eating in China? Sometime ago I watched a Vice documentary about this topic and it showed people in China still eat dog to a large degree even if it is illegal (not sure about that.) Neighborhoods even have stray round ups and sell the stray animals to people, to either eat or keep for a pet.

Oh another question, a gaming related one. Is PC gaming really that big of a thing over there? Reason I ask is because of an article I read talking about a giant gaming arena being built over in China.

Dog eating is still common in many places. However, this issue has been questioned recently. Now most of Chinese agree that pet dogs should not be eaten and steal dog must be punished according to the law. But some people think no dog should be eaten, and some of them will take some violent actions to protect dogs. Once they stopped a truck on highway, which was transporting dogs to some restaurants, and set free all the dogs. But after that, no people look after those dogs, and most of the dogs still died.

Cat eating is very rare in China, actually.

Although eating dogs or cats are not illegal in China, it is gradually known that most of the dogs in the restaurants are gained illegally (i.e., by steal, or buy from the thief), and nobody knows whether the dog meat is safe as food or not. So personally I am against dog eating unless the dogs are raised as "food".

About PC gaming, I believe it is more popular in China than in most of western countries. In China or Japan, there are many guys called "staying at home" , who seldom goes out for sports or meeting friends, and spend most of their time to play PC games, watch videos or idle in Internet. In China there are many "internet bar" which provide computers for all kinds of online games, some people just spend days and nights in the Internet bars, some guys even work as professional game live broadcaster or reporter and are very well paid.

I hope I have understood your questions correctly?

Yes you have, thanks a lot for answering.

That's really interesting, I suppose the documentary I watched is fairly accurate about the situation. Extremists are everywhere no matter where you are. Figured extremism like the highway stop you mention would be minimal because China is supposedly very strict about that.

I think it is more popular over there than here in America. We have many of those professional types in the States although they usually do it at home and not at a café. Are those people who don't go out a lot regarded with suspicion because they don't go out?

People who don't go out will be regarded as "unhealthy" or " not positive life method", but it is ironic that young people like that are increasing, in my opinion. Most of the "internet bars" are not like cafe, there are only computers and the owner may sell some fast food and water, but the environment there is usually very bad so it's a cheap option for PC gaming and more popular in students or low income citizens.

Well by cafe I mean Internet Cafe as they are called here in America and I'm sure else where in the West. Hm that is interesting even low income people play PC even when consoles are considered the cheaper option. Another question if you don't mind, how common is console gaming? The two new ones being Playstation 4 and Xbox One, I would imagine Playstation would have a bigger market over there because it is right across the way from you guys.

Ok, let me explain why Internet bar is even cheaper.

Firstly, the games are free, they are provided by the bar. And then, most of the online games in China are free, the players only need to pay when they want to buy some special items (weapon, armor, etc) or even buy a character directly. Those guy who always use RMB to buy stuff are called "RMB players", by the way. So if a guy just want to play games, Internet bar is the cheapest option, he doesn't need to buy a console, doesn't need a TV, and doesn't even need a PC of his own.

And as you can see, game consoles are only liked by the most hard-core game players which are relatively rich and would like to pay more for game playing. For most young people in China, they only need to buy a PC, and get an Internet account, and then they can enjoy game playing, as they can get many games from internet (for free), as they are in China:drunk:

So gaming consoles are much more expensive than a PC over there? Here in America the console is for your everyday guy while PC is often seen as the hard-core game players place. By Internet account, do you mean you have to make an account (much like this place) to go online?

A PS4 is now sold at about 3,000 RMB in China, it is almost eqal to a decent PC with a monitor, considering you must add a TV and buy all the games which can be gained freely on PC, we can say playing PS4 games is expensive than playing PC games, especially for people who only want to play online games.

And I think Internet account in China is much like that in US. I need to pay about 120 RMB a month for unlimited internet usage.

Is China's internet monitored as much as they say it is?

Please let me know how much it is monitored as you hear, if that's Ok for you

There are many website blocked by the great firewall, and it is said that the government will hire some "commentators"(usually part-time) to post positive comments for the government in some big forums. But there are so many people in China and nobody can control everyone's thinking, actually. And if I really want, I can still find a way to visit the forbidden websites.

Ok so I did the math (used Google) and 3000 RMB is around 450 US dollars give or take a bit. I believe you previously said that you make around 2000 RMB a week (from your 8000 RMB monthly figure). I can see how that might get expensive especially with everything you need to buy.

So you mean internet service then? I will say 120 RMB (around 18 to 19 US dollars) for unlimited internet access is a damn fine price, here I pay almost 100 US dollars for my internet service and only get a 550 GB data cap.

Hmm if Googles exchange rates are to be believed that is around 150,000 US dollars which is a astounding (at least to me and my meager wages). Some Youtube stars make well over that like PewDiePie and other high profile stars. Now does this girl do it through like a television channel or over China's version of Youtube?

Yes, I mean internet service, gald to know our price is good, lol.

The girl mainly makes her show via internet, the website she works for will offer her a channel or chatting room, and her fans can login the channel at a low cost but can pay more to buy some gifts for the girl, and the girl will mention the guy's name in her show or send him a photo with signature as return or something like that. The girl also runs an online store in "Chinese ebay", Taobao, to sell the clothes or jewels she wears, and obviously she will have all kinds of sponsors.

It looks easy that she can make so much money, but if I go to make a game show, no one will take a look at it!

My parent are from Anhui. To be more precise my father came from the countryside in the canton of Wuwei 无为, and my mother from the city of Ma'anshan 马鞍山, and her parents (so my maternal grandparents) were from Shanghai before the revolution of October 1940. They moved in France for their studies and stayed here.

You could say that I'm more French than Chinese, since I'm closer to European culture than Chinese. I do know a few Hanzi, speak reasonably well, went a dozen time to go back to China, and know some stuff (probably more than your regular folk, but less than a PhD in sinology) about Chinese culture, myths, history and theology.
