Doctor Who

Nope.
If there's a topic already devoted to the show that I missed, well then I obviously didn't look hard enough.

If there isn't then why the hell not?

Now's a good a time as any, considering that series 6 starts back up again tomorrow.

Any other Whovians here?

Plenty. Though I'm not too fond of the 11th Doctor. Or rather I am fond of him, but I'm not fond of the generally poorer quality of writing in episodes since Russell T Davies left. And I am really, really fed up with that annoying wrinkly old hagbag River Song.

I miss the 10th. And 9th. And 8th. And 4th. Not so much the 6th.

Still, it's still the Doctor and quite enjoyable, just not as enjoyable.

I've seen a lot of Doctor going back to, well, everything except the first three Doctors. My favorite episode is probably Paradise Towers. Or Blink.

There's something about the 10th that rubs me the wrong way.

Actually I take that back, I like the 10th a lot but I'm getting sick of people gushing over him. Just this constant demand for Tennant to return.

As for the writing, I feel it hasn't declined at all, just changed. I for one felt the Daleks were being overused under Russell T Davis.

Yes, the newer stuff has it's low points in writing, so did episodes under Russell. Then you get gems, like The Doctor Dances or the Lodger.

The way all of the seemingly completely random episodes get somehow connected in the end is just freakin incredible. Some of the best writing and plot construction period.

I don't like the new doctor. It's like he has ADS or something or the 11th doctor seasons are made with children as target audience, I don't know. But I really hope it will get better again... There was like only one or two episodes in the last season that I thought was worth to watch. Not more.

Missing Tennant, he was fancy.

Yeah, I like Doctor Who, i'm not old enough to have watched the old Doctor Who's when they came out, but I did manage to watch most of them. But, of the new Who's, I prefer the 9th and 10th to the 11th. I agree with you Lexx, I have noticed the 11th is more tailored to kids. My favourite episodes', hmmm, well Blink, that was brilliant, yet the end arc of the weeping angels with the 11th Doctor, was albeit painful. I also like Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.

I never really liked Dr Who. Far to campy and inconsistant with it's science for me to get behind. Just wanted there to be a really dark call-to-reality to the guy for once.

That's why I prefer the series Torchwood, in some ways to Doctor Who, it's much darker in most cases, and it deals with human case's more often than alien ones, adds a nice tiwst to some stories.

Yeah. I would have liked it more if they hadn't turned what was once a kick-ass, fucking right-wing pro-British organisation into a group of like five people who are all about living in harmony and shit.

I liked the Torchwood from the Cyberman episode, why is the Crown just resting on it's heels and letting this Jack guy turn a very sensitive, Royaly appointed defender of the realm into a joke.

I guess I just wanted some grey morality from Torchwood, surely someone can be a British Imperialist and a likeable character? Guess we'll never know, loved that Torchwood where Jack was in the early 1900's though and we see some real Torchwood gunning down an alien prisoner.

Jack's like, "Nooooo! You can't harm surrendered prisoners." and the other women says something like. "Well what did you expect us to do with it?"

That's what it should have been. I have no problem with human stories but when the Torchwood Institute just became about five really informal and casual 20-something's treating it as a joke most of the time it irritated me.

"I did my duty, for Queen and Country." That was the real Torchwood, even when turned into Cybermen they could still overcome it with patriotism!

Yeah, their patriotism was rather brilliant, it's a shame really that John Barrowman played an American, he's Scottish for god's sake, why can't he just act Scottish!

 He's scottish? But was he raised in Scotland or in America?

He was born in Scotland.....raised in America, damnit! He can still do a Scottish tang to his rather Yank accent, I can't see why as an actor he couldn't of done it.

These new Doctor Who stories run on average for 2 parts, the oldies ran for between 4 and 6 parts, and the stories were IMO much stronger.

The Seeds of Doom - 1976 - is my favorite episode. I recommend grabbing these old episodes, just be a bit forgiving of the cheesy production values. Actually I wouldn't complain if they remade many of the classical episodes. And Tom Baker was the best.

So what is it all about? After watching the new Sherlock Holmes series, I'm totally up for another british series, while I wait for season 2. Is it similar, only sci fi?

Wow, you just asked the hard question.

What IS Doctor Who about?

Let's start with the main character, The Doctor. Not 'Doctor Who' just The Doctor. The Doctor is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. He is also the LAST Time Lord. Their entire race was destroyed during the Last Great Time War against a race known as the Daleks, mutants housed within a mechanical outer shell who seek to destroy all non-Dalek life.

So then you have the Doctor, and he travels through time and space. He often brings along humans for the ride as companions.

Oh, and he's over 900 years old, the picture I posted is his eleventh incarnation. Time Lords are able to regenerate when mortally wounded, giving them a new personality and body while holding onto their memories.

There's a lot to explain honestly. The show's been around since 1963, and has had a lot of story piled into it.

The thing about the show is that what it's about largely depends on the episode in question. It's mostly science fiction, but when you have all of time and space to explore there's not much that's out of the question.

Thanks. So every time the show is restarted with a new actor it's another incarnation? Is this more of a mystery, comedy, action? Is it clever?

He's an immortal time traveler, one of the last of his race. Every time he dies he regenerates in a new form and gets a new actor, but he can only regenerate a certain amount of times (I forget how many) before he's dead for good.

It's kind of a sci-fi, horror, comedy, mystery, drama, action show all in one depending on which episodes you watch. You should definitely watch it. Watch the old Tom Baker episodes if you can as they're the best.
