Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
I have really good memories of this game in my childhood, but I can't quite remember if I finished the main campaign at all. I had a sudden urge to replay this game when I coded a power in my new game(http://www.allegro.cc/forums/thread/602637) to call Santa Claus a-la Horny style :)

Now I'm replaying it, and yeah, it's a really fun kickass game 8-). One of my candidates for my Top 10 favourite games of all time now.

But I've only played DK 2, and never experienced the first one apart from some videos and screens(and it looks gorgeous for its time). I don't know how the fanbase of DK reacted to this sequel, and which one they consider to be the best.

For narrowing the question a little; I'm playing DK 2 again. I love it. Is DK 1 better and worth playing through?

Also, if there's some fan made patches, expansion, mods, or anything for DK 1 or 2, I'd like to know about them. :)

Oh lordy, those were the days.

Yeah, DK1 is also very good imo. Maybe it's just nostalgic, but the series was excellent and fun.

Reading this thread I also want to reinstall it. :D
I hope it's running well on my system.

Played the hell out of Dungeon Keeper back in the day. As for the second, I've only played the demo, but I remember I felt that the first was better than the second. Again, that's just based on playing the DK2 demo. I should reinstall DK, then try to get myself the second one. The first game is definitely in my top 10 favorite games.

Let's be honest, DK1 is horridly unbalanced.

Hell, I managed to get to the penultimate level after breezing through four earlier ones in under an hour!

I preferred DK1 over the sequel. Too many dubious gameplay changes in the latter.

I hope it's running well on my system.

I got DK1 now(a friend had it in its collection :)), and I had to use DosBox to play it, since the Windows version didn´t run at all.

And DK2 runs flawlessly, and I got the 1.3 and 1.7 patch, as it is said that it fixes stability problems, and also adds new traps and units.

I preferred DK1 over the sequel. Too many dubious gameplay changes in the latter.
Would you mind giving some examples?

Let's be honest, DK1 is horridly unbalanced.
DK2 is really unbalanced IMO. I haven´t had to try any level more than once(except for that damn level with the enemy keeper across the river and a shitload of humans in the middle).

As soon as I finish DK2 main campaign, I´ll give DK1 a go.

I love the comments from the mentor in DK2. It´s so perfect for its role.

What bothered me the most were various creature-related changes. They removed some of my favorite creatures, namely dragons and the Horned Reaper, and introduced a bunch of pussy-ass humanoids like dark elves (what is this, D&D?). What they've done with Horny is especially baffling - one of the game's most powerful (not to mention challenging to maintain) creatures was transformed into a kind of an über-spell that you can activate at will if you have enough mana.

And what's the deal with mana, anyway? There are a lot of little changes like that, changes which add little or nothing to the game, so one has to wonder why they are even there, except to make the game easier (like difficulty was ever much of an issue in vanilla DK1).

There were other annoyances in addition to those, but I can't remember any more - after all, it's been, what, ten years since I played the game?

I agree, the Horned Reaper of DK2 was horrid compared to the unconctrollable slaughter machine he was in DK1.

I can't remember too well either, but I think traps might have been a little better implemented in DK2... The training room not being able to level up past level 4 change can be debated I guess, but I tend to think it was slightly better that way, you could still train your minions to level 8(?) in that combat pit, though they died if you didn't pluck them out in time.

The game had such a wonderful feel to it. The screaming from the torture chamber, the annoyed moaning from the vampires, and the howls of terror from the imps as they got a fireball thrown after them when they took a shotcut through the library and pissed off the warlocks/vampires.

I'd say at least half the reason DK1 was a gem and DK2 sucked, is the look'n'feel, the visual and sound atmosphere.

DK was delightfully dark, immersive and disturbing. Every single one of its creatures were gems in character design.
DK2 was just awful, cartoony and without class. With fucking elves on top. They removed some of the classiest creatures to replace them with unimaginative cartoonish humanoïd shit.

But it's just a trend, look at what Diablo became in Diablo 3...

Then you have the gameplay mechanics mess. But that's another story.

I prefer the sequel, although to be honest, it has been a long time since I played the first one. I remember them being very, very similar in terms of gameplay, so I think chances are you're going to like the second one, if you liked the first.

I haven´t seen Horny in DK1, but it´s kind of bland in DK2(unless you put him in front of a hero gate :)).

Some of the points you said people are interesting. I´ve got two campaign missions left in DK2, and I´ll give DK1 a try after it. Also, I´ve found some fan made expansions for DK1, any recommendations?

My favorite soldier was that good sorceress which you could capture and turn into a ally, on lvl 10 she was unstoppable.

Ah good old times. DK1 was good, but I prefer DK2 more. But yes some things could have been carried over from DK1. Anyway if you manage finish both DK1-2 try Overlord Rising Hell and Overlord 2. Its like picking up where the DK left off.

I managed to beat for once and for all DK2 main campaign. I have no idea if I was able to beat it when I was a kid, but I totally breezed through the final mission with a really large force of creatures. Heck, I think I turned the King's entire army against him

Overlord Rising Hell and Overlord 2

I haven't tried the first one, but I bought the second one. And I regret having purchased that POS for my PC. Linear, and the evil motif of the game feels like a tale for 8 year olds :( The controls were kind of horrible with a Keyboard and a Mouse. And it's totally linear.

But I suppose that's just because it's a sequel, and there is a lot of better stuff I hear from the first Overlord, regarding non-linearity, more freedom, better story.

Let's be honest, DK1 is horridly unbalanced.

Yes. Convert a hero from one of the first missions, then breeze through the rest of the levels basically without having to use any other minions.

Overlord was total shit.

regardless of how evil you wanted to be, you were actually doing good. wtf?

I never played the original, but I still have my copy of DK2. I was a bit cheap my last play through if I recall - I mind controlled a minion with ranged weapon abilities and just went around picking off all the enemies with ease.

I did that with my level 10 Dragon.

Needless to say, winning was simply a matter of possessing him and then finding the enemy Heart.
