Epilogues are not playing

Kindo

Still Mildly Glowing
Yeah, I'm not talking about those FMV sequences (like the one where the mutants invade the vault), I'm talking about those "epilogue" ones. You know, there is one you get when you die (game over), and at the ending you get something about each city you've visited. Well, it loads the screen, but before the narrator starts talking, it's cut off. It skips it. Like if you've just presed escape (or some other cancel button).

So if we take the ending epilogues, it loads a screen and then cancels just before the narrator starts talking about it...then the next screen (city) loads and just before the narrator starts talking, that one is aborted too.

So, any solutions?

I have the same problem. Someone reported that disabling DirectDraw solves this but it hasn't worked for me.

I had the same problem with my original Fo1 CD, but I bought the dual CD jewel with Fo1 and Fo2 awhile back and I can now see the scenes!

MOhrg

I checked through the archives, when I came to page 3 or 4 I think, I started getting "File not found" errors. So no help there, I guess.

Buy a new game...not really worth it, I think. Not that big-a-deal really. I just now finished the game, and although I didn't get any of the epilogues for the cities...I atleast managed to blast that overseer to bits.

Heh, I just noticed I have the same problem with the epilogues in Fallout 2. So I guess it must be something with my system.

Damnit all!

What was that thing about disabling DirectDraw? How do I do that, does it work?

Buying a new copy of Fallout for $10 so you can see the ending scenes not worth it?! *sigh*

Mohrg

Select Start - Run... - type dxdiag and press OK. Then select Screen and disable DirectDraw.

Like I said it haven't worked for me...

Okay..this is very old now. But anyway..disabling DirectDraw doesn't work for me neither. I'm guessing the problem has something to do with me running WinXP? I didn't have this problem on Win98. Or maybe it's the graphics card? Gah, anyway..it's a really annoying problem. I want to see the epilogues. :(

No solution?

I've just finished Fo1 again, and I didn't get to see or hear the epilogue. I'm sort of beginning to believe it has to do with the sound system, as it doesn't crash until the narrator tries to speak. Gah..this is driving me insane.

Try this:

Run - dxdiag - select 'sound' - set to 'no acceleration'

Oh my God! I can't thank you enough! It worked, the epilogue is working again. :D

Thanks! :)

Okay, before you told me how to solve it, I had already sent away a question to IPLY Tech Support (*shrugs*). This is what the guy told me, and he does mention the "change sound to no acceleration" thing, but also something about display settings. It might be useful anyway..and maybe you big guys can post it in some FAQ/common problems, or tech help or whatever -- if you have something like that.

Dear Gamer,

Thanks for your interest in Interplay Entertainment Corp. You want to make sure you are running at 16bit high color and 800x600 desktop area. To check this:

1. Click on Start

2. Click on Settings

3. Click on Control Panel

4. Double click on Display icon

5. Click on the Settings tab

On the left is the color palette. Make sure it reads 16bit high color and on the right the desktop area reads 800x600.

Click Start -> Run, type in 'msconfig', and press OK. Click the 'Startup' tab click 'Disable All', click the 'Services' tab, click 'Hide All Microsoft Services' then click 'Disable All', press OK, and restart.

Click Start -> Run, type in 'dxdiag', and press OK. Click the Sound tab, and look for a line called 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level'. Move the slider all the way to the left, so it says 'No acceleration'.

It is critical to update the drivers for your video card and your sound card. A driver is the software that controls the hardware. Updating the drivers will help your devices better communicate with the game and with the rest of your system, and can help solve many problems.

The DirectX Diagnostic Tool is very useful in identifying your video and sound cards, as well as the currently installed drivers. To access this tool:

*Click on the Windows Start menu

*Click on Run, delete whatever's in there

*Type: dxdiag

*Click OK.

This will launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. In this tool, the System tab tells you useful information about your general system (processor, RAM, version of DirectX).

*Go to the Display tab-this tells you information on your video card. Under Device in the upper left, it says Name-this is the name and manufacturer of your video card. Approximate Total Memory below gives the memory of the video card-make sure it meets the minimum requirement of the game. On the right, under Drivers, it gives a Version number-this is the version of the driver installed for the card.

*Go to the Sound tab-this tells you information on your sound card. Under Device in the upper left, it says Name-this is the name and manufacturer of your sound card. On the right, under Drivers, it gives a Version number-this is the version of the driver installed for the card.

The information found in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool helps you know the different devices you have installed. It is essential you update the drivers for these devices. The driver updates can be downloaded for free from the respective device card manufacturer's websites. You need to download the driver updates and install them, which usually involves double-clicking the file you downloaded or unzipping it to your hard drive and running the executable.

Sincerely,

James Kompare

Hehe, you crazy kids. *takes a wiff off his pipe*

Yes, the "set sound to No Acceleration" worked. Epilogues and game over stuff working perfectly now.

*smacks Elissar*
I saw only the long post and not the short one!

So what happens at the end? :look:
