F:NV nominated for best writing and awards round-up

While Fallout: New Vegas isn't comparable to Fallout 3 when it comes to the length and prestige of its list of awards, it certainly scored a lot of nominations, the latest being for the Best Writing category of the 11th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards. The other nominees are: Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar San Diego), Heavy Rain (Quantic Dream), Mass Effect 2 (BioWare) and Costume Quest (Double Fine).

Here's also a round-up of some of the awards Fallout: New Vegas has won:

The Guardian puts it at 5th place in its Top 20 of 2010 games. <blockquote>The game's appeal is similar to Red Dead's – as Jake Arnott put it in his review, "Perhaps its greatest strength is the fact that everybody can play it differently. I never really experienced major game breaking bugs in both F3 and NV, just some freezes, crashes and the occasional npc\corpse in the wall moment. I'm on PC though, so maybe the console dudes aren't as lucky.

And it's good to see the game getting a lot of praise. The fact that people are saying that it's buggy to the point of unplayable and yet they still can't stop playing it, well, that really says a lot about the game and how good the content is.

Tis true how Fallout 3's broken, buggy gameplay was ignored (rubbish engine... GOD ITS AWFUL!) yet F:NV superior story telling, quest lines, characters ect just seemed to have been undermined by the media community at large.
 
Nice to see NV get some recognition, at least. This may very well be the most well-received Obsidian game to date, and that's good if we want them to handle the franchise in the future.

Also, apart from the stupid omissions of FO3's bugginess, the things that comes most often and annoy me the most is the ME2 comparisons. I mean, I love both titles a lot, but it's not even remotely the same kind of game; comparing the writing is good, but NV's gameplay almost has more in common with RDR if you exclude the 'RPG' tag that Bioware puts on ME to not frustrate its fans.

And yeah, while the award list is overall decent, Heavy Rain has no place on anything but a Most Gimmicky Boring Overhyped Game of the Year (with a Most Shameless Fanservice one on the side for good measure)
 
NV really has awesome writing, compared to 3. It can even be compared to 1 & 2 writing. Ok, in some parts.
But the damned conversation system ruined most of the experience for me. You can't really "talk" to an NPC when time around you is frozen, and he/she just stands there, looking at you, barely showing signs of vital organ activity...

I havnt seen any major bugs with Vegas either, but I still have no doubts that both Vegas and F3 are buged as hell (particuilarly as many I know told me they could not finish quite a few quets with the Khans and House because of the bugs).

Though now I remember on a second playtrough in Vegas I had to use "console commands" to reset house because someone had the strange idea to give the robots in the suicide-vault a conection with house ... thehe. Both F3 and Vegas ARE buged as hell. No dobts about that.
 
Bugout 3 and Fallout New Bug are really buggy. But I've never had sam really big game-breaking problems with them really. I remeber I had some in 3, with the slave quest, or something, and in NV on few occasions. But really, console is a blessing...or a curse...
 
Red Dead had good writing?
It's gotta be a joke nomination... Right?
RDR was so cliché and it's story was a repetitive of "help me!" "Okay, after you do this." then take that times 30.
Vegas' story was funky as hell with motivation as to why one wants to go after the chip or why one wants to help NCR or Legion after they send messengers after you, but other than that it had pretty solid writing for the most part.

I just can't wrap my head around as to what part of RDR had good writing.
Maybe the dialogue between characters from time to time but even that was minimal.

Everyone knows Heavy Rain has to be nominated for writing. It tries so hard, so it has to be!
 
I'm just sad that this recognition of Heavy Rain will lead to teenagers growing up thinking that this was actually "deep".
 
I played New Vegas on my xbox and can list about 100+ bugs that screw with the game from the usual un-finishable quests to strange ones like being attacked by an electricity pylon/party members flying into space/ kids flying around the streets on invisible motorbikes etc

I had a really unlucky play through but it didn't stop me totaling up 60-70 hours and exploring every inch of the map. After another few DLCs are released and a full patch I will do another play through.
 
i found FO3 to be much buggier than NV

i still remember a bug i experienced in FO3

i was doing a quest outside lamplight and a NPC got caught up on something. they kept doing a jerky animation like trying to walk over it or something. eventually it shot up in the air and when it landed, it landed on my char killing him.

In other news Game Informer made Mass Effect 2 it's Game of the Year and RPG of the year.

Proving that space is the place if you want to win the award race.
 
I must be lucky or something, because I rarely experienced any bugs or glitches outside of it freezing here and there every now and again while playing the PS3 version.
 
Only real issue I came across was that damn quicksave/autosave glitch which set me back about three hours. However I've learned that its a pretty good idea to make at least three or four other saves just in case you make a screw up, a lesson strangely enough Fallout 2 taught me. (Now that was a game that had some pretty bad glitches at release.) But I really didn't mind the setback. It allowed me to experiment with the other outcomes.

I also came across an undroppable item. It weighed one pound so it wasn't an issue. Oh, and I came across a dead Victor at New Vegas which prevented me from accessing the House missions. I'm guessing his death also set off his respawn back in Goodsprings. He was there in front of his house completely inoperable. Literally, he was turned off, no face on the screen or nothing. Just stood there hunched over.

I don't see how these glitches are so bad though. I had my playthrough of Mass Effect 2 ruined because of issues and Red Dead was the buggiest piece of shit that ever was created and they get praised indefinitely for their uninspired gameplay. (Though Red Dead did tell a good story in a well crafted world saving it from mediocrity)
 
A lot of games with "good writing" have good writing in the context of pulp mass market genre writing, which is usually terrible writing when compared actual good writing.

New Vegas is one of the few games that even attempts to have actual good writing and while it doesn't always succeed, it does at least in some parts have legit decent writing. Just putting forth this effort really does make a noticeable difference in quality that stands out from most mass market games.

New Vegas won some game of year award from wikia right?
