Fallout 1: Release variety analysis

Hello all.

During the time passed since the first release of the semi official FO1 patch v1.2.x we have found several incompatibilities with some versions of the game. Looks like the are more different disk revisions of the Fallout then we thought. Most probably those are uncommon later international releases and early US specific ones. At least two fo them has been found and analysed but there are more.

In order to compile a new revision of the semi official patch v1.2.x we have to ask your help. I made a validation package which will check the disk on the user's side and will produce a diffpack for the unknown releases.

Volunteers are expected to download the validator and proceed with the following instructions:

0. Make sure that you have at least 1.2Gb of a free space on your HDD
1. Upack the validator script to the separate directory
2. Insert Fallout CD into th CD-ROM drive
3. Run validator.cmd
4. Disc will be detected automatically. If it won't -- you'll get a corresponding error message
5. Wait until the end of the procedure. Analysis should take 5-10 minutes or so.
6. All files found to be different and analysis logs will be compressed into the result.dat. Send us that file.
7. If you'll get the result.dat of an enormous size, at least send us logs.dat which comes along with result.dat.
8. If you got result.txt instead of result.dat then your disk is qualified as one of the well known releases.
Check result.txt for descriptions. An, yes, no additional actions are required in this case.

Result.dat is an ordinar Fallout DAT archive. You can browse it with any of the suitable tools to make sure that we are getting Fallout files only and not your personal data or such. ;)
The most desireable way of the feedback is the message in the current topic with a link to some of the file sharing servicies where you have uploaded you diffpack.

The more users will check their disk, the more accurate will be the new patch revision. Not that even if your readme reads 'Fallout v1.0' there are at least three of thous 1.0s. Spend some time and check your disk.

That's all. Thanks in advance.

P.S. One more thing. It was tested under XP and 2K3 only, so 2K and Vista users could experience problems as well, But this is not for sure. And validator surely won't run under Windows 9x, sorry. I could make a compatible version on the demand but don't have enough time right now.

P.P.S If you have an european multilingual version of the game or Fallout v1.2 WITH children note that they are first priority.

I hope this isnt one of those times when you witness a respected user, take advantage of everyone.

1. No way are you going to make a accurate prediction of what game everyone runs.
2. Nor do I believe it within your power to analyze every bit of data of each game.
3. Are you trying to steal unique indentifiers from our disks?

Yes! And he'll call Interplay customer support using your serial number!

Prosper:
Well, I've expected someone to say this.
But first, you haven't read all my statement carefully. And second, if you hesitate you are free to ignore my request. Also third, tell me where those unique disk identifiers you have mentioned are located?

Per:
Sure I'll do. Also I'll pass his serial number to the KGB. :D

Actually I found an interesting file in my Installer disc. however this is for fallout 2.

Program/Win/WS_FTP.txt

98.12.01 13:25 B K:\fallout2\program\win\cfgwin.___ <-- 194.135.207.3 - Jarik /cdrom/program/win cfgwin.___
98.12.01 13:26 B K:\fallout2\program\win\fallout2.___ <-- 194.135.207.3 - Jarik /cdrom/program/win fallout2.___

There are some ip addresses as you can see. Odd. IPs are unique identifiers....

I DO NOT have such a file on a disk with:
FALLOUT Version 1.0 (29 Sep 1997) [US]
FALLOUT Version 1.1 (09 Nov 1999) [US]
FALLOUT Version 1.2 (19 Nov 1997) [UK]
FALLOUT Version 1.2 (1x Mar 1998) [UK/FR/SP]
FALLOUT Version 1.1 (13 Dec 1997) [RU]

Moreover I DO NOT have such a file on a disk with:
FALLOUT 2 Version 1.00 (15 Oct 1998) [US]
FALLOUT 2 Version 1.01 (15 Oct 1998) [UK]
FALLOUT 2 Version 1.02 (20 Jun 2000) [US]
FALLOUT 2 Version 1.00 (15 Oct 1998) [GR]

Odd, isn't it?
If you have nothing more to say and don't have any of interesting Fallout 1 disks, please, don't waste my time with your false accusations.

Well uh, this time, it's not related to Fallout 1 disks. But! You used the word 'AND' in your sentence! So I thought if I were to qualify as an unpleasant benefactor, I would have to say something unrelated to fallout 1, but at the sametime say nothing. Well I choose to say something... Boobs! Though unrelated to Fallout 1 disks... its something more to say.

That file doesn't matter. If it's on your disc, it had to be on the master copy, so it's not your IP. If it's not on the disc (which is far more likely, given that the IP maps to St. Petersburg), the validator doesn't even look at it. And as it doesn't use WS_FTP, the validator didn't create it either. End of story. Drop it before moderators get involved… again.

And they're saying we, russians, are crazy... :)

Look, guys, we need it badly. Or should I say you need it badly. We can not create a stable semi-official Fallout 1 patch for all FO1 releases without knowing the difference between them. Do you want to see bugs, bugs and bugs only because you own some exotic early release which is totally incompatible with 1.2 and 1.3.x patches? I'm sure you don't. So stop this nonsense and try to help us make FO1 better.

Questions about the HDD space.

646.6mb is a humongous installation . A.k.a, the MAX. And 646*2 = around 1.2G
At what step do I duplicate my Fallout installation folder?

Or is my disc a 'ordinar' one?

"If there is no result.dat at all then most probably your disk is rather ordinar one."-readme-validator.text

It means what it says ;). Run validator only from a drive with at least 1.2Gb free. Don't worry you'll get your space back. If you don't for some reason -- clear temp folder manually.

Yes, if there is no result.dat you have ordinary CD and do not need to do anything.

Thanks for cooperation. ;)

Prosper:

During validation process in the worst case you could have at the same time up to 1Gb of data in the temporary directory and files cached to the HDD from the CD-Rom. Exact value will be between 1Gb and 1.2Gb.

Or is my disc a 'ordinar' one?
Validator can recognize five of the most common variations of the disk distributions. If it finds disk 'familar' no further analysis would be performed. Therefore no result.dat will be generated. See result.txt for the exact description of your disk.

Methinks, a flooder thou art. :P

Updated the validator slightly. It will pack logs into an additional logs.dat now. Made instructions in the first post more clear.

Heh. Almost two weeks have passed snice the moment of the first posting and the result is zero. Or I'd rather say -- negative.
Either no one plays first Fallout nowdays or everyone are to afraid of the 'russian hackers stealing indentifiers'... :irked:

AFAIR you have the most common 1.0 US @ 29 Sep. Anyway, I'll make a Win98 compatible validator just to be sure. And I'll post link here.

2Nimrod:
Unfortunately Win98-compatible validator is still not ready. Sorry.

2All:
Meanwhile russian colleagues have reported details on two more releases of the game. Both earlier unknown. At least one of the releases will be accomodated in the upcoming revision of our patch. The second one is russian only and makes no sence for the english version.

I'm pretty sure you're right anyway. The readme file direct from the CD reads:

FALLOUT: A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game
Readme File - 29 September 1997
Version 1.0

Checking the disk properties shows 09/30/97.

I don't actually play Fallout 1 anymore but i like what your trying to achieve and the effort you have gone to do it. So I have ran the validator and its detected an unknown version (I have 1.1 9/11/99 release). Is there somewhere i can email the 1.35 mb results.dat file to?

2Nimrod:
Yes. On the first look it's seems just like my very first disk with the game. But do you mind if I still ask you in the future to test your disk just for Win98 validator tetsting purposes?

2Predalien:
Thanks! :) Check your PM box for the email address. But it's strange, since I was pretty sure that 1.1 9/11/99 is perfectly known to the validator. May be you have some alternate revision.
