A new HD gameplay video on GameVideos.com shows some gameplay elements, such as using stimpaks, hacking and the Rock-It-Launcher. Nothing new, but you can view it in more detail now. After showing the thinky method of hacking and using the Rock-It-Launcher in VATS, an "alternate method" is shown, in which the PC just blasts his way through in real time with a minigun.

Thanks Ausir and Anani Masu.

I - for one - love the way the PC doesn't react in the slightest when getting shot during VATS cinematics.

Well done indeed.

Also, since this is HD it'd make a good source for additional screens. Anyone up for extracting them for us?

PS: also, these are not good examples of alternative ways to handle things. You end up fighting in both cases.

I guess this makes my post in the Fallout General section redundant. What's the proper method for bringing shit like this to the attention of someone with frontpage access?

Anyway if this was a random encounter in Fallout 1/2 you would generally only have the fight/run options. Sneak by, fight or hack their turret against them doesn't seem too bad.

The usual way is to hit the "Contact us" link on the NMA front page, in which case all newsposters can see it, or if you're feeling lucky you can PM an individual newsposter.

Doesn't look like this encounter is random, though.

Well no, but that's because this is a scripted demo.

That said, my comment on "this is not a good way of showing alternate methods" isn't saying it's not cool that you can shoot or hack, it's saying that if they want to show of alternate methods this is not the best situation. Talk/hack/sneak/fight would be the very minimum, to me.

PS: I wonder if there are random encounter turrets. That'd be thilly.

Yeah the random encounter system in fallout 3 sounds like it will be centered around very portable scenarios that can be dropped in various spots. A trader fighting off a pack of wild dogs is much more easily laid down than an entire raider mini base with auto turrets. Anyway I don't think this is something from Bethesda directly so you'll have to take your disagreement up with whatever 1up staffer made this video. Also tell him missing a cowering woman at close range like that is embarrassing.

EDIT: By the way, did you see the item list for the rock-it launcher (I feel dirty typing that)? Apparently, you can also decapitate your enemies with a pack of cigarettes...

Bravo.

There should be ways to do fairly good "puzzle-piece" slotting of encounters into the world. Each encounter has a certain area and adjusts to the elevation along the borders, maybe even dynamically placing some scenery to match the surroundings and mask the worst of the discontinuity. You could probably accommodate a raider base that way and more.

The AI really looks quite bad, very much like Oblivion. With all the fuss about "virtual lives", it seems like they forgot some of the NPCs are supposed to be able to fight. And in grand Bethsoft tradition, it looks like this game will feature many, many varieties of random crap.

The ambient backing sounds nice, although I had to adjust the volume to uncomfortable levels to even hear it properly.

I'm not entirely sure but it looks like when he pulls out a Big Gun (Rock It Launcher being the scrapheap big gun) the raider realizes she's outclassed and starts to cower in hopes of being spared and only starts fighting again when attacked.

I hate the way the teddy bears get shot from that gun completely vertical, with no spin at all

when in reality you'd expect the bear to come flailing out, bits of stitching coming apart and fluff everywhere

and with the coffee cups, I doubt they'd stay intact during the firing process and should fragment on the way out of that gun....

they've put it in as a gimmick, a really sad gimmick

The aperture of the Rock-It definitely looks smaller than most of what comes out of it.
