Fallout 3 is the best of 2008, ok?

I never understood why people wait with handing out GotY awards until the year is over... I mean, why bother?
Keeping things nicely sequential, we jump from the second instalment in a series onto a game which is the third in a series – and what a series! Fallout is one of the holy grails of PC RPGs and although the news that Bethesda has bought the rights to third game from the now semi-defunct Interplay has been met with mixed reactions from gamers, the game still looks tantalisingly good if you ask us.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC, Fallout 3 will depart from the convention of the past Fallout games and use a FPS perspective similar to Bethesda’s other game series, The Elder Scrolls. The plot is being kept tightly under wraps, but we do know that it will see players starting off in underground Vault 101 before venturing out into the wasteland above in search of their father.
What makes Fallout 3 look so tempting already is the way it seems to fuse elements from both the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series’. On the one hand, it will be an FPS/RPG using the GameBryo engine in which we can expect to see plenty of similarly-voiced characters and fetch-quests, while on the other hand it also seems to be impressively gory and has a facility to allow turn-based combat using power-ups.
With a fusion of some of the best talent and licenses in the RPG genre, Fallout 3 could be the only game you’ll need for the rest of your life.
However, there are still some people who don't feel too much like praising games unabashedly when it's still almost a year from being released, such as WRAL.
Fallout 3 - Bethesda Softworks created the brilliant role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Now they’re tackling the post apocalyptic world of Fallout with this third outing. PC and next gen gamers will be able to create a character and roam this destroyed world, while contending with its inhabitants. This franchise gets a new developer and its first next gen outing, which could make it this year’s Mass Effect or Oblivion (if you want to go back to 2006’s top RPG).With none of the original creators onboard, Fallout 3 could flop if its new developer drifts away from the series’ essence: distinctively dark humor and dialogue, and retro-’50s wastepunk visuals. Fallout 3 could easily become a BioShock rip-off. (PC, Xbox 360, PS3.) [The bolded part of this paragraph has since been removed from the editorial. Speculate yourself why - Brother None]
Or Sarcastic Gamer.
I’m still torn between horror and joy at the thought of this game. The Fallout games stand as some of the best games I have ever played (and still play). The mature universe, awesome storyline, dark humor and awesome turn based party fighting still have next to no competition even today IMO.

I’m just afraid that this new third person/FPS, no turn based, no strategy take on the series will fall short. Sorry, but I hated Oblivion and the idea of that same group of devs butchering Fallout gives me nightmares. Good or not, I know I won’t be able to help myself from buying this one when it comes out.
To get an overview of the praise heaped on Fallout 3 - a game NMA is not allowed to judge because "it's too early", but apparently this kind of behaviour is ok - I refer you to Fallout 3: A post nuclear blog, who has done two summary articles: The Hype Machine and Fallout 3 Will Be Watched In 2008.

Some interesting thoughts on the game though. Not something I would have expected to hear from any media. I do see your point on the "It's too early" bull...

Well, it's not fair towards those sites, because they're not the ones telling us it's too early to judge.

And to be fair, that noise has quieted down since the Fallout 3 review. People are starting to be forced to recognise two things:

- In the earlier days of Fallout 3, people were making predictions and jumping to conclusions. Perhaps that was wrong, but regardless, a lot of those predictions, the worst of them, have been coming true.

- The time when it was "too early to judge" is long since over. Previewers can say "If you liked Oblivion, you'll like this" and we can say "If you liked Fallout, you won't like this." We both might be wrong, but it's far enough along to be able to make an educated guess.

does anyone remember the good ol' days of PC gaming when you could read the side of the box and be able to tell that you'd love a game?

I can recall that exact moment when I picked up FO2 in the PC computer stuff store, and checked out the schnazzy box with it's flip open lid, read the blurb about having robots and mutants as party members and said to myself

"God that's awesome."

I wonder if it's all the media hype that's made sure I can never have that feeling again..

I remember times when I could read a review and was able to tell "damn, this is it". That was the case with Torment. And now? Every game with hdr/bloom/whatever is super awesome and must-have, stupid shooters aren't stupid shooters anymore, but next-gen fpp games.

There needs to be an indie game store, somewhere that the established gaming company's garbage cannot set foot.

Somewhere that has unbiased reviews of the games rather than a box of hype, and comparisons to other games, well known or not so much so.

Either web based or in real life it'd be a neat experience if you ask me, however I don't envision it making a killing compared to some of the other bigwig stores, but it would be a great front for indies who are having a hard time breaking through the media garbage and for people who're sick of the standard fare.

Damn...

Seems you don't know Manifesto Games. Check it out.

Weird, the bottom part of the WRAL quote isn't on the page. :|
Wonder why they removed it? Very odd, since the first paragraph still includes a slip-up on their part.
2008 was a stellar, record-setting year in the videogame industry, and 2008 should top those records
Doesn't seem like they'd miss something like that if they're cleaning the post up...

Or perhaps the rabbit hole goes deeper and BN and Briosa altered the news! :o
Altered it to... ehh... make them seem smarter...?

-.- after a quick look at work on that site I already found at least 2 RTSs that have caught my eye... it's gonna be an interesting time when I start combing that site :P :D

Their prices are damn reasonable too, not like shrapnel games *grumble*

Sarcastic Gamer.

Somebody tell him he's blown his shot at the next all-expense-paid trip to Maryland for the next big press event from Bethesda. Why can't he just play ball?

Heh, this guy must've barely slept when he first saw the GI Fallout3 preview. "V.A.T.S.? What the.. Fatman.. blah blah.. Aww, son of a bitch!"

Yeah, too bad for him. He probably won't be getting any stat-increasing bobbleheads anytime soon, either.

Damn, they did cut that part. Sissies!

Interesting.

Here's what Pete Hines said on the cut:
I dunno. Why don’t you ask them.

I read the comment that apparently got removed and didn’t think it was that negative or give it a second thought. Nobody from here said anything to them about it.

“With none of the original creators onboard, Fallout 3 could flop if its new developer drifts away from the series’ essence: distinctively dark humor and dialogue, and retro-’50s wastepunk visuals. Fallout 3 could easily become a BioShock rip-off.”

1) None of the original creators are working on Fallout 3. Nothing negative there.

2) If we drift away from the series’ essence, it very well could flop. Nothing negative there.

The last part is just silly, because Bioshock admittedly drew inspiration from the original Fallouts for a number of things in the game. Didn’t really care to ping them to inform them of that, and it isn’t negative as much as it is backwards.

I tried to register on there to ask, because I think it's weird, but didn't get a confirmation mail.

Anyone?

I completely agree, and I do think you'd be absolutely right in saying "If you like Oblivion, you'll like Fallout 3" and vice versa.

In the early days of Fallout 3, we were saying "Oblivion with guns, lol amirite?". That has since changed to "Oh shit, it really is Oblivion with guns. Dammit."

I was able to register and post a comment. The link in the confirmation email I received was a 404, but you can use the confirmation code in the email to complete the registration.

I seem to be loosing my judgement. It was a sarcasm, right ?
