Fallout: New Vegas is gaming's Lawrence of Arabia

Besides, who of the mainstream market will actually remember New Vegas? They might remember Skyrim or Battlefield 3, but New Vegas is pretty much forgotten for them.

If you asked the "Mainstream Market" who Lawrence of Arabia was, what do you think the general response you get would be? Unless it had a recent remake, not many of those people would have a clue, either.

Remember that mainstream media is fickle and generally under-educated (or simply has a short term memory). If we were to base any work simply on popular mainstream opinion, we would miss out on a lot of classics, initially disregarded but became classics, not because of the "mainstream market", but through fan support.

There's a very long list of movies, games, TV shows, etc. that experience a resurgence in popularity after a few years because of strong fan support in spite of "mainstream media" forgetting about them.

"Shawshank Redemption" never won an Academy Award, and was a commercial flop. Yet, it's got such a strong fan reaction that it's #1 on imdb's list of movies (topping even "Lawrence of Arabia" and "The Godfather").

"Final Fantasy Tactics" was canceled in its first run because of poor sales because it was so different than other FF titles. But fan support was eventually so strong that it experienced a resurgence, enough to be re-released as a "Greatest Hit" in spite of not actually being one.

Plenty of more examples. I'm not saying New Vegas will definitely be like that, but I think it will stand the test of time better than most "Mainstream" games.

Yeah, well, that's why we're here ;)

I'm a fan of Fallout Tactics and it doesn't seem to be liked by a lot of people... Mixing it with a Fallout RPG style (and thus developing 6 characters instead of 1) could actually work in my opinion, you know, Fallout Tactics RPG ;)

As for New Vegas not being remembered, I agree. There's nothing too significant about the game, it's been overshadowed by Skyrim...

Seriously? I've played some of Skyrim and it's not that great, so I doubt it will be overshadowing anything, except in the eyes of hardcore fans.
