Fallout Shelter in the East Coast...

First time out of the vault
Now, before you go off and say that this is all fake and I made it all up, just listen to what I have to say.

This is a great read for people who are really interested in wanting to know of a real... but secret, US government fallout shelter.

I found out about the location of this fallout shelter (I believe is secret to the public) before I played the fallout series. I played the game 3 months ago so I'm all new to the series. Anyways, so this is what I found out ...

A real, and secret government fallout shelter...

The last place anyone would think a real fallout shelter would exist in ...is in Orlando, Florida USA. Home of Disney World! ugh...

I'm from LA but I lived in Orlando, Florida for over 10 years before I moved.

About 3 years ago. I got a job working as a tollbooth attendant for the Orange Country Convention Center.

The government had spent money making a new convention center in that area when I started working there. Not necessarily replacing the old one, just joining them two together. There were now two buildings. The West building, and the North/South Building.

Hear is a picture of where in America the place is … zoom

From wikipedia:
The Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) is the primary public convention center in Central Florida. It is located in two buildings straddling International Drive in Orlando, Florida. The OCCC now ranks third in size in the United States, with over 2.2 million ft² of exhibition space. The two buildings contain 7 million ft² of total space.

Visually, it doesn’t look too bit but I was people who worked here always bragged how both the buildings can hold as many as 4 Boeing 777 Jets. It’s true, It’s HUGE!

Where I worked was usually the parking lot. As a tollbooth person. I wasn’t really in charge of much, just take money and hand tickets… . And the people who work there were really old. Like this one guy who was a really nice person, he was in his 80’s! He had like grand grand children XD but man he was in great health; almost everyone there was in great health.

They always liked seeing young people there. I actually got a job there because my best friend, her father use to work there so she and I got a job there together and we use to work the tollbooths.

We both worked there for over a year! It was fun; barely anyone came to the tollbooth. We could read books, listen to music, or play games on the ds/psp ☺ good times.

There were different divisions working there. The people that set up the convention center, exhibitors and then the business people handling all the money, from the exhibitors. I was in the business division. I became very close to the staff there and that’s when I found out about the Fallout Shelter.

One of the managers was taking me for a drive around the North/South building
placetobeko1.jpg

when he started whispering to me, in a mild tone.

“Hey, so if there is ever a problem, if anything major started happening around the world, this place is safe…”

And I was like… “What do you mean? Like a hurricane?” I thought this was all a work related conversation…

“Well, say for instance there was a worldwide incident or if we got attacked by the terrorists with chemical bombs…”

“uh-huh … “ I was all like WTF? … go on …

“There is an underground shelter built under the convention center. It’s big enough to hold up to 1 million people. You know that right? The majority of employees know this.”

I was like Ooh… “Like if there was a nuclear bomb that drops here? There is a shelter for that?! Um… “ Ok, I don’t know how you would react when you are told about a shelter THAT HUGE! 1 million people is A LOT OF PEOPLE. I have never heard of such a thing… remember I had never played Fallout at the time so I could not fathom the possibility why we would need one…

“It can be anything… Do you want me to show you the gate to the underground area?” he said…

I SHOULD HAVE SAID YES! But I said …

“Um , nah, it’s cool, we don’t have to go there now, I need to get back to the booth, but where is the entrance though?”

We were in the south hall exhibitor entrance when he pointed to a little tunnel going under the building… amazing…

“It’s right there, that tunnel leads to it…”

And that was that.

A couple of months later, some of those hurricanes hit. Remember that? Four hurricanes hit Florida in one month. Charley etc etc…

While I was working there, they used the convention center as an evacuation center.

http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/stories/2006/06/05/focus3.html?from_rss=1

Scroll down to where it says “hurricane fallout”

There were a lot more articles about this but I can’t find any. While I was working there, they used the north/south halls for all the evacuees.

I saw some amazing things there while this whole hurricane thing was happening.

For instance …
northhallkf2.jpg

They used this entrance for a lot of helicopters around the area (News choppers) and many government planes as well! They all landed near the parking lot so I got the front seats to all the choppers and planes coming in and being dragged into that little tiny gate.

It was amazing how many things the government fit into the building before some of the hurricanes hit. I was surprised… but I didn’t think anything of it afterwords…

Another thing I found out later on is the AMOUNT Spent to build the north/south hall. There was a HUGE riot in Orlando about the price for the North/South halls.

$800,000,000
That’s $800 million. More than Half a billion dollars was spent on it. And the building does not look like an expensive building from the inside you guys. I always use to go to the North/South halls for lunch and everything from the carpet used to the lighting used was not glamorous as all… it was just cheep looking. Everything, even down to the toilets were cheep dirty cheep toilet you guys. Like the ones you’d find in a gas station.

One would think that with so much money spent on a building, there would at least be automatic flush toilets but there were not.

I was mad too. They spent so much money on a building that just looks cheep… They spent the taxpayer’s money to make this building. Where did the money go?

A fallout shelter seems more and more likely. Plus I don’t think these old people have any merits to lie to me about a fallout shelter actually existing under the building…. I don’t see why they would lie to me about this…. They were just concerned that if anything was to happen, I would know where to go and where to take my family.

I do believe there is a fallout shelter under the convention center. It just seems more obvious than not …

So that concludes my report on the area….

If there is ever a problem. If something was to happen. At least you now know of one place in the east coast that you can go to.

What do you guys think?

A million people?

That seems like a blown out of proportion claim. What about all the air and water processing machinery? Food?

The storage space for food intended to serve a million people during a crisis would be gigantic.

Furthermore, who builds shelters of this magnitude right smack in the center of a city, of all places?

It'd be the first place to get hit by a nuclear weapon, vaporizing the shelter in a matter of seconds.

While I don't doubt there very well could be a fallout shelter there, I'm pretty certain it couldn't ve possibly held *a million* people.

Amazing they have such a huge structure. Good idea to have it situatuated under a place people gather since everyone will know where it is and when it's not being used as a shelter they can use it for conventions. Well except for one scenario...

There is an underground shelter built under the convention center

Oh great...so when the bombs fall all the Otaku's at the anime convention will survive to re-populate the state of Florida as the new "Japano-American Anime/Manga Conglomerate".

No seriously I like anime, but that seems really funny.

Well although it would make itself a target being in the middle of a city the fact is if they had it outside the city no one would get there in time. I suppose they would be safe if it were deep enough even in the blast zone.

I don't think it's a shelter like that. I think people could manage for a few days ....

Also, it may look like it's crammed packed but that area is very open. The place is HUGE. And the convention center is built at the outskirts of the city. Not in the middle.

if you have ever lived in Florida, you would know how wide open the place actually is.

Not only that, how does one explain $800,000,000+ spent on the building?

You have heard of the classic, the government buying a toilet seat coasting $2000 a piece ...

~463 x 276 meters.

Dude. The hall is big, but there's no way you'll fit a million people, all the additional machinery, facilities and storage space into that.

Hmmm... I don't know. Thought I know you can not fit that many people in the buildings combined, I have no idea how big the place is underground.

I missed a great opportunity to see the door to the Vault :p

While I worked there, I remember the biggest convention we had was a Brick convention, 100,000 attendants, the west building was packed! I was actually told that more attendees could have come.

And it may not look as though but the north/south halls are bigger than the west hall.

I just thought it was interesting and I wanted to share it with you all.

It's cool, we all appreciate that.

I'm just stating that a fallout shelter for a million people would be bigger than the city itself.

There actually is an "underground city" or "vault" directly under Washington DC. One of the access points is near the Washington Monument. During the protests toward the end of the Vietnam war, my father just happened to be there when the ground literally opened up and out came thousands of heavily armed dudes. He got some nice pictures of the event.

Sounds cool, however in my home town we have like a skypyramid with like lasers and photoblasters. In the event of like a fallout can climb in the pyramid and eat ham sandwiches whilst observing the world sink into oblivion. So basically i'm cooler.

No doubt there is a fallout shelter, but it's not meant for 1 million people. Mass population protection isn't really the objective of fallout shelters. You cannot hope for any real percentage of your populace to survive so you have to aim to conserve small pockets scattered over the entire territory that have adequate equipment and supplies to return to the surface. It's not about saving lives it's about the future, a shelter for 1 million would aim for the former and as such would be a huge impractically and waste.

The fact that it probably cost a billion doesn't really support your case either, such costs are required for a facility of this size. The kind if equipment and supplies as well as survival mechanisms used do not come cheap. If this shelter housed a million it would have cost a lot more, been a lot lot bigger and would have a less gay entrance.

Btw i just made all that up based on what people have already stated, but logically if you consider it, for a minute, there is no chance that the shelter was designed for anything like 1 million people.

*clears throat* .... whats wrong with gays honey? XD

Well, I'm sticking by what I'm saying. Though it could be wrong, your argument is all 'he said she said', cant really prove anything like that.

While I'm at it ... here is a list of the worlds largest convention centers ...

I would not be surprised if there is a shelter under them ...

Facility, Square feet of space

• Las Vegas Convention Center, 3.2 million
• McCormick Place, Chicago, 2.13 million
• Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, 2 million
• Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, 1.4 million
• Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, 1.1 million

EDIT: After a little research ... it's kind of weird that all of these facilities are government owned (I don't know about McCormick Place).

I worked for a casino that had convention centres that could hold 12,000 people when the walls were removed and the building didn't look big enough to hold that many. So I reckon one million in one centre is feesible and certainly possible.

Well, a shelter needs not only to be able to fit those people in, but to be able to support them.

You are talking about independent water supplies, food, and bathrooms, at the very least, for those million people.

i wouldn't be surprised that such facilities have shelters.

but yeah, one million is bullshit. the general concensus is that in case of nuclear mishaps (or attacks), the people should remain in the shelters for no less than two weeks.

one million x 2 weeks = total logistics & architectural nightmare.
