How do you duplicate your NPC's on the unpatched version?

I think you can't actually duplicate them. It's just a bug. It happens or it doesn't. You don't have an actual say in it.

Oh Boy! our kid Maxie here has found that darned bug that screwed up two or three of my saved games befrore I got the patch. Get the patch. Don't try and duplicate them. It WILL screw up your savedgame.
