[FO2] The Den and those annoying pick pockets.

Anarchosyn

Still Mildly Glowing
Just a passing curiosity:

I'm replaying Fallout 2 for the first time in what feels like 15 years (10? I dunno) and just got to The Den. Far more so than I remember, those little blighters in The Den have been robbing me blind of all my caps. Noticing that they ran straight to Tubby, I promptly introduced his face to a few 9 mm rounds, looted his corpse and -- low and behold -- no more theft issues.

Just two quick questions about this:

1) Am I missing out on any potential action (quest or otherwise) with Tubby dead?.. I neglected to introduce myself beforehand.

2) Am I right in assuming I've dealt with the pick pocket issue? Nowhere on the net can I find any reference to killing Tubby as a means of canceling the concern but, though I've noticed at least one kid applying the pick pocket animation as I walked by, I've yet to notice anything else go missing.

Thanks.

1. Not as far a I know (It's Flick who 'works' with the kids, another asshole you can shoot in the groin /face)

2. I don't think killing Tubby gets rid of the pickpocketing problem However if you are using Killaps RP you can get the children off the street.

Way to not answer either of his questions, Doc ;)

1) Nope, Tubby is just an ass. Kill him.

2) I don't think so. The kids outside of the building should disappear but the other kids will keep stealing. They just won't bring it to Tubby anymore, it'll stay in their inventory. You can steal the stuff back. Alternatively, you can avoid getting pick-pocketed by sneaking past them or entering combat to run past them.

...but, if the kids aren't working with Tubby then why do they run right to him?

Anyhoo.. I read somewhere that killing Tubby cuts off a vital supply of ammo for the early portion of the game. Truth? I find it hard to believe but I figured it was worth asking.

(p.s. nah, I'm just playing the vanilla FO2, patched up to the latest official but sans the community patches).

He is a good early-game source but I can't imagine you'll run out if you don't squander your ammo.

The kids run to various shopkeepers they work for and actually put what they stole into the shopkeeper's inventory (so you can buy it back). Per's walkthrough has the goods
If you don't get an item back, the kid will run to the nearest shopkeeper and fence it (those outside Becky's will cross the street to Tubby), in which case you'll have to trade for it if you want it back.

Tubby can tell you, where the Redding exactly lies. Actually, he'll add a mark on your map. Otherwise, I agree with the other, kill him! It's a drug dealer.

My favourite solution for dealing with the kids in the Den is to leave Sulik in the eastern part of town, then go back on your own and punch the thieving little bastards in the face (or anywhere else, for that matter) a couple of times each till they flee from combat. They won't steal from you anymore after that.
