First time out of the vault
Hey guys

I played Fallout way back when, I think I bought them from a Virgin Mega Store.

Anyway, they really did make an impression on me back then and I've certainly played most of them past version 1 and 2 (NV was probably my favourite of the 3D versions)

It's been so long since I played the original ones and I can't remember too much about them. Can anyone help with couple of questions I have:

1. Fallout 1 was quite disappointing to me as I remember that it has an internal clock that counts down to the game ending... you either have the GECK or you don't which was something that hit me hard since I carefully progressed through the game inch by inch rather than rushing it to find I would never make it.. I might have cheated to see the other ending (I can't remember)... Anyway, I seem to remember Fallout 2 not having a timer, is this right?

2. I read a comment on steam (actually this is how I found this website; someone linked it), they mentioned that the Steam version has been butchered with content filtering (I imagine gore has been removed or something).. is this correct? Reading around on here there seems to be some restoration mod or something, can anyone explain the differences/benefits of this. I played the original Interplay versions back in the day.

3. Is there any places you could recommend buying fallout 1 or 2 from? I have already got the original CD's but they don't really work that well on DosBox or Windows 10 (I had some issues and I'd rather just rebuy them to run nicely with Windows 10 than have to start messing about too much to be honest)

4. Anything I should watchout for (or anything of interest) for revisiting a playthrough on Fallout 1 or 2?

Many thanks

1. Fallout 1 you are searching for a water chip. You have a decent amount of time and you can do a lot before needing to bring it back. In fact, you can even pay caravans to bring water to the Vault to extend your time. The second part of the game might have a time limit but I don't remember it at all, so likely a very long time limit. Fallout 2 definitely has a time limit but it's like 13 or more years. You could do every quest in the game and should still have over half that time left if I remember correctly.

2. Likely depends on your region. I know that Fixt should restore Fallout 1's kids. Fallout 2 has killap's vanilla patch and Restoration Project that should restore it. Just google that really, there should be info on what patches/mods you can find to fix that. Probably something in the download section here.

3. Digitally? GOG.

4. Don't do 1 or 2 Intelligence or low Agility either. Not for a revisit after so much time. Something like those are for replays. I've never done too low Agility. Just play outside of that and have fun.

Thanks Squadcar, that was helpful

Pretty sure I ran out of time in one of them, by the sounds of what you mentioned, it was more likely the first one. I just remember something popping up on screen and an end cut scene playing telling me I failed to complete the main objective... probably something I triggered early on and didn't realise maybe.

I think I had more fun with the second one, probably due to not have the bad experience of the game just suddenly ending on me previously. I think there was more character animation in the second one too which always looked amazing to me back then and I think it helps so much for connecting to characters.

Thanks, I'm a fan of GoG too ;)

Thanks for the SPECIAL tip

Also remember DO NOT SAVE DURING COMBAT. It will corrupt your saves (I learned that the hard way with fallout 1).

What Squadcar is pretty accurate. In F1 you've got plenty of time to get the water chip before that time runs out. After that, I think there may be a hidden timer in the game since there is a hidden threat to the vault. I've never run into that since it's easy to complete the game before it comes to that. Fallout 1 is actually a fairly short game and you'll run out of anything to do. Also in F1, companions follow you EVERYWHERE. Be careful about walking into a confined area where they could run in behind you and block you. You can't move them out of your way and it effectively ends the game since you can't move!

I believe Killap's patch and I know his Fallout 2 Restoration Project fix the time limits of the original game. Don't play F2 without either the patch or the RP. Vanilla game has WAY too many bugs that can break the game.

You can buy the original games on GOG or Steam.

It was a quirk of development in Fallout 1 that added NPC party members to the game—they were not originally planned. As a result of the late stage —hacked— implementation, party NPCs are scripted only, and are missing vital hooks into the engine to give context to their situations... IE. do not stand in front of your NPC when they have a range weapon, because they cannot actually detect your PC; and will shoot right through them at their target. It's perversely common for them to do this with burst fire.

Also, do not allow the NPCs to follow you into a tight space, or corner, as there is no way to command them to get out of the way. If they block a door, the only way to get past them is to get far enough away from them that they may try to catch up; not always possible. At last resort you have to attack them, which turns them hostile.

Originally the game gave six months to save the vault, and the option to discover a way to send them water from a water merchant to extend that time, but doing so would reveal the location of the vault to the outside world; the Master's Army would learn of the delivery—if not witness it themselves. This reduced the time for their impending attack.

The easiest way I got companions out of my doorways in Fallout 1 was just running to the edge of the room opposite of them and running back and forth a bit until they moved towards me more and out of the doorway. Just a thing to keep in mind in Fallout 1. It's still easier to mind that they might block your way and this solution is not guaranteed to work.
