I got this little snibblet in my mailbox:
To all members at the great NMA i run a website dedicated to a spiecial game mode which has been played in Fallout Tactics. It is known as FOT:RPG. Basically the map is a town, in which you can pick many roles and 'act them out.' However popularity in this game mode has fallen and i was hoping you could help promote the site and the game mode... Im sure all the veterans at FOT:RPG would be greatful....

Heres the site link:
http://www.freewebs.com/radman2307/
So go have a looksie..

I don't know the game/mod/mode/.. whatever he is talking about, and the website doesn't provide me with any answers. What is this ? Sounds good, like to check it out, but what ? how ?

Do you need fallout tactics, install a map/mod, and 'role play' ? Is it an irc thing ? Custom written ? Openrpg ? A forum ?

Hmm, looks like some kinda MMO version of tactics, only done thru regular multiplayer.

Well, anything that adds ANY RP element to tactics cant be too bad, considering the game lacked RPing entirely.

I'm not familiar with multiplayer in fallout tactics, but I wonder how control/quests work ? Would it be possible to have a (few) 'constant' maps running on a server, for everyone available to join ? That way, if you could script a few shops, have a few admin possibilities to add critters/npc's/quests on the fly, you could indeed make an interesting rpg enviroment. Like the admin that creates a map to be cleared, with an item to be found'. Complete the map, return with the item, and your quest is solved.

Only problem would be hosting more than 10 players .. You would need a rather powerful administration/full time commitment to make it interesting.

Maybe it done along the lines of 'real' rpgs I assume in FOT multimplayer you can send messages to another player (I have neved played it multiplayer).

So maybe you all join a map and talk to each other and then go and kill the bad guys in a cooperative mode?

Would be the most logical, yes. However, it would be rather tedious to create quests and control npc's/critters ? And seriously limiting the amount of players, I guess. Still better than the alternative, being an irc/web-rpg alternative.

rather than debate what it is... why doesn't someone just download it and try it? It might get us answers quicker :-D. I'd check it out but alas, I haven't picked up FO:T yet :).

I am here to answere all your questions.

Basically you play on a map of a fictional city based around Fallout, via the Fallout Tactics multiplayer system on gamespy. You choose a role within the town at the screen where you'd usually pick 'defenders or attackers.'

The roles include:
Mayor, Police Department, Raiders, Civilians and many more

You then act out your role and let the game develope. If your a gang boss your aim would be to controle the illegal guns market or drug smuggling. By buying out the mayor or keeping the PD off your back. Civilians would earn money from working in the shops or doing jobs set out by the mayor or crime lords. If someone is killed the Police will do an investigation and catch the crook which may lead to a trial. Many interesting situations have appeared from this method of game play such as hostage situations inolving mad cultist ghoul groups, to a full town take over led by the local mafia.

I suggest you check it out if you can. Its an interesting and ever changing way to enjoy Fallout Tactics.

Sounds great, but can you save character progress ? And how does the administration work ? And does the map stay available on a server ? If so, I could try to figure out the protocol, so you could display info on a website about the current players (kinda like cs/ut stats). Do you have to prepare the map in advance ? Or can you alter things on the fly without restarting the map ?

Well unfortuantly due to the limits of the Fallout Tactics engine we cannot save progress of games. We have to start a fresh each time... all of us in different roles. This is not an MMORPG, it is a different style of multiplayer game play. Each server can only host 16 people (If anyone has any idea on how we could raise this number im open to their ideas.)

To give you guys an idea of how a FOT:RPG game works i have left a screenshot below:

Stand-off.JPG

Here is a pretty interesting screenshot this was when raiders took the mayor hostage in city hall.... I was the men in Blue (The towns Police force)

Court.JPG

Heres another screenshot from a different map... the court is hearing evidence which will put a cop killer behind bars.

Oh i forgot to post this little image... A man is about to be taken to court accused of killing the mayor. He exclaims his innocense one last time.

This is truly amazing! 16 people isn't much though, and that's main problem...

And, there is no such thing as social skills9i.e. speech), isn't it? All depends on abilities of people behind keyboards.

Anyway, it is a great job to use such game as FO:T to create a form of community.

Sounds great.
There is up to 16 players. How big team one player control ? Because in the court screen I see 15 selected characters.
Hmmm, if every player could have such group under his/her control this would make city quite crowded place.

Edit: ah shit, it seems can't count stright

Each city is pretty big...

Usually we allow a full team of six. Theres usually so much to be done so you do run into people through out the course of a game. However with some of the 'newer' maps we have been adding entities... Which has made the city population bigger.

If you have any questions or are interested in playing than check out the site or e-mail me at:

Oh there is killing... we just dont like 'over-kill' if you get what i mean... if its Role Played in a good way. Like say you hire a hitman to kill the chief of police and he does it without killing anyone else. then its a job well done. Of course you have to have a reason in why you want him dead. But usually things like that go down well. Its just senseless spreeing which gets on our nerves. Also cops who think they'll kill anyone for a laugh is not good. But overall things go relatively well...

take a game i had this afternoon i was hired by one of the mafia families to steel a police hummer and lots of police hardware... now i needed to get into the station for that.... so i went up to the front desk and said i needed to protection.... they let me in but my other guy came through the door along with a team of frost family goons armed with tommy guns... they told the cop to freeze while i went into the back room and took the armour... i then went into the garage and took a hummer... there was a cop on the controles at the gate i told him to open it, and with 6 guys pointing automatics at him he did.... i got the hummer back and earnt $12000 for that job...

I managed to break into the PD station without fireing a shot... I had some help but over all that was good Role Playing...

Like i have said some very interesting situations spring up in game.

yeah, that definitely sounds cool...

...but actually i pressed reply to say that i'm pleased to see someone with a decent taste in music here :D (talking 'bout the Times of Grace cover as antistructure avatar... great cd, great band, great artwork)
