Free antivir for Vista

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
My sister bought a laptop with only a trial version of Norton 360. Now since the trial is over, she can't access the Internet and I only have Norton 2007 for XP. Anyone can recommend me a solid anti-vir?

Agreed. You get 1 year free trial and then you get a very cheap offer to keep it. Think I paid the same for 3 years with Avast as I would have paid for 6 months with Norton.

I second Avast Free edition if you have no money. I prefer Kaspersky if you have the dough.

Avast easily beats AVG in my book.

and yes, the home edition is free. you just need to register it each year and get a new key.

but you still have to remember: using your brain is the best anti-virus...

Just, be careful. Anti viral applications as well as software firewalls can cause a whole host of issues with your internet applications.

Regardless, not having them at all is worse.

since I started using Vista I haven't been using any protection besides the windows Firewall... so I'm gonna get Avast as well.

but just out of curiousity, from what I've heard there aren't really any viruses for Vista yet. anyone know more about this?

That's what hacker want you to believe 8-)

Avast eats up a ton of resources that are better spent elsewhere, from my experience. I'd go with AVG Free.

Or Linux.

euhm, what?

when i compared Avast & AVG, Avast had a way smaller footprint than AVG for me...

do note of course that you don't want to set the VRDB to generate while you're doing something of course, but apart from that, i have no clue wtf you're going on about?

Yeah AVG sucked up more resources than Avast for me as well. Just a warning to everyone else though. NEVER...EVER....buy System Mechanic by Iolo. Trust me. Worst antivirus ever.

I think it depends on ones level of technical competence. I for instance do not use any anti-virus software and worked for a small ISP that refused to use any as well. I'll on occasion run a free scan via trend micro and maybe come up with some malware. I don't visit websites that are generally prone to infections and I most certainly do not use IE.

Indeed the safest bet would be an alternate less popular OS such as Ubuntu or OSX. Unfortunately, one will most likely run into software compatibility issues though...
