Jesus.

I'm not sure if that's a positive or negative invocation.

I've definitely been knocked back on my heels a bit, though.

Looks like the demo was played on the XBox. Primary developing platform, anyone? Anyone?

There's a lot of crap in here, especially the supermutants, and the eerie similarities to Fo:BoS. And the fact that V.A.T.S. is, indeed, a crappily executed RTwP system.

Discuss, all.

i'mafraid to look.

good work !

first thing : looks like the concept art was used since i can see details of the modelled scene from the "guys over a dead mutant" concept art. (or is that just my eyes playing tricks?)

Oh yay, they even went as far as to make karmic traits XBox 360 achievements!

Yay whoring out the license for console gamers! YAY!

The non-combat and non-graphic parts look ok, tho'. Multiple endings, branching quests, choice and consequence, specifically putting off that last point against Oblivion. Not horrible, there.

PS: Vault 101. Heh.

Well, the nuclear catapult is indeed a nuclear catapult. My lord.

Focusing on the positive, there's apparently food and water requirements which is a nice touch. Water is basically a weak healing potion, but most of it you find is irradiated to different degrees. The dialog screens are supposed to be like the talking heads from FO1/2. Weapons break down or are destroyed a lot (so weapons will for the most part be jury rigged or makeshift?). "Most of your experience comes from quests -- grinding for experience just isn't that useful."

I'm sure they'll be plenty of takers for the negatives.

This is not Fallout.

"Drinking out of a toilet" to regain health if needed?

"A nuclear catapault"?

Yay. BoS is back. Originality soars.

V.A.T.S should have been vatted. Horrible idea IMO.

That supermutant just doesn't work for me.

The portion of the character creation where they have the "You're Special!" cardboard book.

Then you get a BB Gun at 10!!!

Looks like they modeled Clint Eastwood on page 55 of the scan.

I'm sorry. This looks like Oblivion with guns.

Hopefully that wont be the part that while isnt seen in screenshots will really sour the whole thing to hell if its not done right.

And from what i read .. vats sounds like the WORST absolute WORST combat system ever...

Give me back my iso view, for one. I would so hope it will be customizable. Another of my hope is that the V>A.T.S. will indeed be balanced to reward careful turn-based play.

Also, the BOS is a bit of a stretch there, but...

They're making all the right noises as far as the above is concerned, but aren't you wondering why none of that made it into Oblivion?

It seems strange to me, they talk about characters which interact with each other in a meaningful way, or many different branching sub-quests where one branch may affect which other branches are made available, but surely they wanted something like this in Oblivion? Or did their design specification for that particular game say "generic quest system" or "give no substantial meaning to sub-plots", or even "no consequences to player choices".

In fact, I'm almost sure this is the kind of language I was hearing before Oblivion was released. They discuss lots of wonderful ideas but the reality is often far from the hype. Maybe they just didn't get around to it in Oblivion being more concerned with the awshum graphikz.

Meh. It could be worse.
The Supermutant looks like shite, but that could still change.
And the VATS sytem is obviously RTwP, but if well implemented, it could work, I guess.

Yeah, I'm tired.

OMG they are doing it... Oblivion with guns ... shit.

So it is only 1stPerson and locked 3rdPerson. So there will be no way to zoom out like in Oblivion.
Supermutant looks like FOBOS.
CombatSystem... arghhh

Also the inside of the vault is modeled pretty directly from Fallout. The in-game wrecked car looks very 50's. Level scaling is gone.

Unfortunately most of the "good" aspects pointed out in the article are just the absence of many of Oblivion's bad aspects.

Still, I'm trying to stay positive.

The combat screen is obviously being demo'd on the 360, with the "Accept - RB, Return - B" while fighting a super mutant with a shield and a warhammer +1.

Calming breaths. Hooooo.
