Atari has a surprise announcement for us from/during E3, GameBanshee reporting on a new action-RPG to be released on PC, XBLA and PSN: Gamma World: Alpha Mutation. Gamma World is a P&P setting whose rules are heavily inspired by AD&D, with a setting in the 25th century following a nuclear war. The bad news is the developer is Bedlam games, who just worked with Atari on the universally derided Daggerdale.
In the fall of 2012, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, embarked on a new series of high-energy experiments. No one knows exactly what they were attempting to do, but a little after 3pm on a Thursday afternoon came The Big Mistake. Something unexpected happened, and in the blink of an eye, a multiplicity of possible universes condensed into a single reality. Welcome to Gamma Terra.

Gamma World: Alpha Mutation sends you to Gamma Terra, a savage land of adventure, where the survivors of “The Big Mistake” must contend with radioactive wastes, rampant lawlessness, and monstrous predators. Against a nuclear backdrop, heroic scavengers search crumbled ruins for lost artifacts while battling mutants and other perils.

Create your Gamma World hero from a variety of primary and secondary origins. Radiation-triggered Alpha Mutations change the players abilities in unpredictable ways throughout their adventure, and powerful Omega Technology will allow players to bend the laws of reality itself in their quest for survival.

Explore Gamma Terra: Take on a variety of perilous missions through a variety of regions of gamma terra, from ruined cities to barren wastelands and beyond, the collision of multiple realities has created a world as exotic as it is deadly.

The Quick and the Dead: Gamma world delivers the depth of an RPG and the action of third person shooter. Quick reflexes and split second decisions are just as important as effective character design.

Lone Wolf or Death Squad: Take on missions solo or join up with friends to tackle the challenges of the Gamma Terra. Play with two players locally or up to four players online.

Evolve Your Character with Alpha Mutations: Gamma World’s character customization system allows players to actively develop their character in almost unlimited ways.

Discover Omega Technology: Powerful technology from other dimensions can turn the tides and preserve your hero’s life… for now.

Conduct Weapons R&D: Scavenge the environment for parts to create new weapons, armor, tools and more. Your ingenuity is your edge in this fight for survival.

Man. That is a whack, weak-ass proposal. I'm surprised by the writing, the premise, the obvious attempt to capitalize on Fallout, everything. Lame.

The 4-way co-op might be fun if they utilize the PnP tools and don't mess up as bad as Daggerdale.

Well hopefully they'll learn from their mistakes.
I quite like Gamma World as it's basically just a post apocalyptic 4th Ed D&D game spruced up with incredibaly random stuff thrown in.

The idea of a new PA rpg is always exciting but unfortunate I really don't care in this case.

Basically copying Bethesda and making a stat hybrid rather than a RPG with PnP inspirations regarding skills and combat.
I am sure the developers will make sure it will be up to the tastes of the DA, ME and FO3 fans.

The setting itself, to say that Gamma World is a bit more 'over the top' than Fallout would be an understatement, we are talking loads of intelligence animals and plants for example.
Mutation is basically super powers

Going to skip on this one.

Wasn't the Gamma World series set in a post apocalyptic universe that became such due to nuclear war? I like the 2012 setting they have here, if they were going to change the story for the GW universe, wouldn't it have been better to just create a new IP?

It's good that Bedlam is able to find projects to work on after what happened with Scratch. Hopefully Gamma World learns from Daggerdale's mistakes.

I remember playing the actual the actual GW tabletop 2 Ed. iirc and it was damn fun. Nice to see that it's still around in some incarnation or another. Also, kinda reminds me a lot of the love/relationship with newer and older FO ala the 2d iso to fps switch. I imagine it probably will be fo3/NV borderlands hybrid with "rpg elements" or whatever they're currently calling the rpg lip service they're handing out these days. We'll see what the devs come up with I guess, but I'm definitely not holding my breath for this one.

I'd like to point out that the term "The Big Mistake" is most likely a reference to the "Hyperion Cantos" book series.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Daggerdale is a pile of horseshit. I recently bought the tabletop 4e Gamma Terra and it is truly magnificent. One of the players rolled a Yeti and an Android as origins (yes, you do not create characters, you roll 2 d20's and you live with what you get) and called him Chewbacca-Vader.

The issue I had with Daggerdale is likely to appear here - instead of being able to duplicate your character from the tabletop game, you get a bunch of weak-ass pregens. Also it totally messed up the 4e system. Why say you're using it, when the only matches are a few power names? Sorry to burst your bubbles, but it's going to suck.

No one knows exactly what they were attempting to do, but a little after 3pm on a Thursday afternoon came The Big Mistake.

One of the scientists forgot that you should never attempt to cram over 9000 buzzwords into the same closet, and a giant explosion scattered handwavium all over the place.

Interesting. I still have the original boxed version of Gamma World. I'm pretty sure it played a part in the inspiration for the original Wasteland game.
