General Gaming PC Maintenance.

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
So this thread might just end up being common sense but I figured I would ask anyways and possibly learn something. Despite having always been a slight PC gamer I was mostly into consoles, I never took extra precautions to take care of my computer at the time.

However once I got discharged from Boot for jacking my back up I sold a rifle for $2k and dropped it all on a behemoth of a gaming PC. For obvious reasons I am obviously a little more interested in protecting this investment.

So this place having always been the PC user oriented bastion of power that it is, I figured some people might have a few tips on what they do to keep their PC in tip top shape.

In particular, any programs you run on a general basis to clear out clutter? I imagine some files get left behind from installing/uninstalling games and was wondering if there was anything that would clean all that out periodically. Or just any program in general really that makes sure all the files are sorted and where they are supposed to. I obviously know about CCleaner and Defrag and the like but was wondering if there is anything else.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

I'm using Revo Uninstaller software.
It's very easy to use - when uninstalling some software, instead of the standard "add/remove" panel, simply use the Revo Uninstaller.
There are two versions available: Free and Pro. (Free is good enough, if you don't want to pay for it.)
If you're interested, you'll find some info and download on the homepage:

(You are using the Windows platform, right?)

CCleaner

ClamWin Antivirus if you prefer an antivirus that you just run manually every once in a while, OR

Avast Free Antivirus if you prefer an antivirus that runs actively in background.

I recommend a hardware firewall (e.g. a router) rather than any software solution.

Other than that, just do regular defrags and run check disk every so often.

How long ago did you get this computer? With what you spent on it, did you get (a) SSD (solid-state) hard drive(s)? Using an SSD for your OS and resource-intensive programs (such as games) is a huge boost in performance. The price-to-storage ratio is still way high compared to regular platter-HDDs but it's worth it if you're spending that kinda dough on your comp. Platter HDDs are just such a huge bottleneck to system performance.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit.
Ouch, the 64-bit OS are supported by a Pro version of Revo Uninstaller only. (still, there is 30-day trial available for free)

Kyuu,
I suggest to use Avira antivir, instead of Avast.
Avira have reached a better test results on Virus Bulletin. (also a free version is available)

I use CCleaner for registry fixing

I use CCleaner and Registry Mechanic both, because they seem to find separate issues. RM finds a lot more stuff to fix than CCleaner, but after I'm done cleaning with RM, CCleaner still manages to find some problems overlooked by RM.

Anyone who makes program that deletes all files in my Downloads folder as a default setting needs to be fucking crucified and burned. Thanks a lot. Oh well, it's not like I downloaded those files for a reason, right?

I have been using this program for over a year and never had this problem. It certainly doesn't delete any important/ user files by default.
