Ghosts and haunting in Fallout

I tried the search function, but couldn't find anything that seemed to fit this topic, so nyah! :P

Anyway, I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the idea of having ghosts haunting the wasteland? Admittedly, I didn't like the way the ghost in FO2 was implemented, but the whole intro to Fallout1 makes it sound as though you'll b e running across abandoned, pre-war homes and cities where the spirits of the dead are too restless at their unjustified death to go on to a final resting place.

I'm sure that someone will pop up and object to having anything obviously supernatural in Fallout. ;)

I don't like the concept of ghosts in Fallout. I don't think it fits with the setting as it is.

However, i have nothing against supernatural concepts in a post-apocalyptic setting. I have entertained the concept of psychics (or derivations of the psykers in Fallout 1) to be more widespread and possibly affected by/interacting with the spirits in a PA setting, with the souls of the dead becoming a force as strong as the background radiation that affects the world.

I personaly dont think that ghosts should be in FO.

At most, have something spooky that scares the PC's party.

I didn't have a problem with the ghost girl in FO2, though I really don't think there should be any more of that mumbo jumbo in the Fallout setting. Besides, any ghost that is not ethereal (and thus unharmable by mundane weapons) is a really crappy ghost.

Ghosts roaming the wasteland instead of travellers, raiders, various monsters etc. would be a serious disimprovement.

I think the whole ghost idea is dead stupid - as was the ghost in FO2.
You would get similar situations as on the random maps in FOT: villagers in stealth mode roaming the wasteland.
Great.
Right.

Females only, though. And they should be called Psy Chicks.
I can already see them: a group of perfect curves travelling the wasteland, wearing leather thongs and wielding their favourite melee weapons: big rubber pleasure sticks.

Nah...

Maybe as a random encounter in the ruins of a town where you see ethereal humans turn around and watch how their etereal flesh is scraped from their bones by an unknown force.

Was that a brain fart, or just a random outburst of wild imagination?

It was a very subtle mixture of both, topped off with some glazing and just a pinch of cinnamon, if you know what I mean.
After that it just stank.

But I do agree that a group of psykers could play a role in a future Fallout title. It's not uncommon in 50s sci-fi pulp and so on (or at least, that's what my selective memory tells me maintenant). Something like those mental geezers in Beneath Planet of the Apes.
But stuff like this is hard to implement. It was only a small motive in Fallout as well.

Now that's a brainfart!
It belongs in Baldur's Gate or Arcanum or some fantasy setting, but not in Fallout, imo.
On second thought: it belongs in LotR. :D

Fair enough :) I was intrigued with the concept of psykers, but its a shame they weren't used more.

Speaking of weird occurences in Fallout, here's an equally weird question: how viable would it be for a person to eat radiated food, or drink nectar out of a radiated plant, and develop mutations by doing so, in the context of Fallout? Or for that to happen, would it be necessary that the food or nectar be experimented on?

There's lot's of spooky haunted sounds in the background music of all fallouts. That's by itself great, and enough, IMO.

Ghosts? No. People masquerading as ghosts? Now that, I like.

A group of former Nightkin with Stealthboys would make an interesting side quest to help people in a town calm the fuck down. Or perhaps, better yet, a group of tribals. They would be more inclined to believe in ghosts.

I posted this because, being the lazy GM that I am, failed to flesh out a few points I marked on my map, and had to make something up instantly - so I had the party stumble upon a haunted nuclear power plant.

Now that I've taken time since the last game session, I think by the time they're done they will truly hate any mention of the supernatural.

Then again, they probably already do - I sent them through the Guardian of Forever. :)

I suddenly have to think of a weird FOT encounter. A number of transparent civilians with some kinda weird label running over a city map, through walls and all.

After watching a few run past I decided to have some fun and opened fire.
They had a sort of assault shotgun on them, so I tried to kill more but I only got two or three.

This would be better done as, for instance, a dream... Remember the sequence in Terminator 2: Judgement Day?

Putting ghosts into the world brings about the danger, that the players would treat them as something obvious and a catchy plot device, while I think that they ought to be seen otherwise - as lurking shadows, just like BlueNinja said, alwas right outside of the corner of your eye... (like the ending of Ian Watson's Returning Home said)

I think that you could have a good argument for having ghosts in Fallout - seeing that there is a whole city given over to the dead (or at least should be dead) i could see the entertainment value of a real ghost town - particularly as a random encounter thing where there are a few buildings and the inhabitatns cause no harm but do have background info etcetera.

But you don't want to turn it into a ghost fest of a game either.

I dont like the ghost idea.It doesnt fit in the setting.Ghosts=Life after death.Life afther death=heaven & hell.Heaven & Hell=Gods.
Isnt the idea of Fallout that we are helpless and that no one can save us from our madness?
But of course some tribals will believe that there are ghost and thats good.Makes for role-playing.

Ghosts? Yes if you can only see them while you are on some heavy jet.
I thought about the ghost in F2 and I could be wrong but it does not fit fallout world so much that it could be done on purpose. That area of town where the ghost appeared was very druggy. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Also, it appears in the next room from that mummy trading guy who ripped people off with that crap. Maybe he wanted that locket and did that somehow with the aid of drugs? Well, maybe it's just really a ghost but I was suggesting possibilities.

Yes, and the Master may have wanted to steal a car from Bob's Used Car Mart and did so by way of creating a ferocious mutant cult. Not very likely, though.
