God of War III

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
The game endings thread inspired me to make one of these. I am a HUGE God of War fan. One of my favorite videogame series (and stories) right up there with the Metal Gear games.

Next months Gameinformer is having a special on God of War III, the article and scans were leaked but for the sake of copyright issues I will not post those. Instead here are some details you can just consider "unconfirmed speculation".

* You start GoWIII with all the same abilities that you had at the end of GoWII and you DO NOT lose them. Only goes uphill from there.
* You can now mount different beasts and control them for added carnage!
* Sixaxis control will tie into the brutal executions (i.e. ripping someone's head off).
* Puzzles and combat will both be getting refinements - less block/crack operation.
* You will no longer just be fighting small groups - get ready for small armies.
* Sex mini-game is back! Score!
* The game will have tons of new weapons upgrades.
* Santa Monica hopes to make GoWIII the game that "Shows what the PS3 can do".
* The game will close the trilogy.
* Better interaction with the environment - won't be so stale now.

That first bullet point is amazing. I am thrilled they are letting you keep your weapons and abilities instead of making some lame excuse why you would lose them.
This game is going to pick up right where God of War 2 left off. Which for those not familiar had Kratos and the Titans climbing up Olympus getting ready to lay the smack down on the gods.

This game has been a long time in the making due to the vision the devs had for it not being able to be fulfilled due to the hardware limitations of the PS2.
I do believe the wait is going to be worth it. From the sound of things and the few pictures and previews that have been shown it is looking to be epic beyond words.

God of War director David Jaffe stated that, "God of War explains, or ultimately will explain, why there are no more Greek myths." He has also stated that it will be "hell on earth" as the gods and the titans battle each other for domination.

E3 2008 teaser.

So... Any other God of War fans? :P

I never, never, used any of the combos in GoW1 and GoW2 beyond the basic ones you have from the start (like square, square, triangle and whatever).
To me that means the games are basic button mashers, sure they're violent and have nice finishers, but really, I expect more.

I never had any issues with how the game played. It all fit together quite nicely for me. Then again I am thrilled with the type of gameplay the God of War games thrives upon.

The two PS2 games and the PSP game have stellar critical and commercial success. This is one of those games that I cannot even imagine disappointment being a possibility.

That is of course if you were a fan of the previous games.

Well I played God of War 1 and 2 and I have Chains of Olympus lying on a bookcase shelf so I will most likely also get GoW 3 when its out.

Here's hoping that they manage to make using other weapons worthwhile.

After all, it never hurts to add more punching-stuff-to-death in a game.

Seconded.
Tho' I really was hoping for the "Brother's Revenge" story that they had set up in the bonus content stuff.
The games themselves were mindless fun. Not very hard on the hardest settings. It did have teh boobies.

And the death of Perseus. Hilarious.

I played, and got bored with, GoW 1, and never touched any of the others.... however, GoW3 has me stoked, so I'll probably go back and play through them once part 3 ships.

Saying that is the same as looking at Diablo 3 and say: "uh... not ANOTHER isometric hack'n slash...".

Fail, man... fail...

Flaming whip?!? The Ghost of Sparta does not use no flaming whip!

Those are the Blades of Chaos/Blades of Athena. Depending on which part of the time line you are referring to.

I didn't care for God of War at all. It had an awesome beginning and then got extremely repetitive. I thought POPs were better games, especially when it comes to combat.

I got blown away by GoW2 though. That game kicked ungodly amounts of ass (pun intended).

If this trailer is any indication, GOW3 is going to be more like GOW2. The first trailer sucked balls, this one has got to be one of the best trailers for a game. Not only does it show the actual game, it's epic as all hell. I will be paying attention to this game for sure.

I always wanted to play god of war but i never owned a ps2. my brother has a ps2, maybe i will check the game out when i visit him this summer, but right now i don't know anything about the first two god of war games and it would be stupid to play GoW 3 without knowing anything about the story.

If you do not get the chance to play them that will tell you everything you would possibly need to know. The games story for me is up there with Metal Gear Solid. I find the games amazingly fun but I am also going crazy waiting for III to come out just because I want to see how it all ends.

Thanks a lot Bal-Sagoth! But if you are saying that it's up there for you with MGS then i simply HAVE to play God of War 1 & 2! :D

Thread Necromancy!!!!

It is hard to believe but the time is almost here. One of the most anticipated titles this generation will soon be launched. Anyone else excited? I already have the UE reserved at GameStop.

Anyways, here is the brand new trailer that was just shown on Spike a couple hours ago.

The scale of this game is intense, the Titan/Levithan fight looks mind blowing.

Considering the hate that some of the posters here gave to Heavy Rain for using endless quick-time events, it's funny to see the love GoW gets. Every boss in these games is one big QTE.

Normally a set condition has to be met before the QTE begins, be it something environmental happening or a set amount of damage.

God of War is my favorite example of how QTE should be done and I don't mind it, it gives an epic cinematic feel to finishing a fight.

I've only played the first GoW game because I wasn't impressed and had no real desire to buy the sequel but in that game, the QTE looked cool, especially for bosses, but got boring on regular enemies fairly quickly, especially when you were fighting through, for example, nothing but minotaurs. I liked the look of the boss fights but they really weren't in anyway exciting from a gameplay standpoint. I like all of the crazy moves but what I like better is actually being able to pull them off myself without a quick time event.

GoW tries to look cool but it doesn't have spectacular gameplay (though it is quite hard) while I'd say Devil May Cry has spectacular gameplay (you can actually do awesome crazy shit, doesn't use QTE) and looks cool. GoW's swordplay just isn't very interesting when compared to DMC, even less so when you start including the different melee weapons in DMC that are actually fun and mostly useful. Another thing that bothered me about GoW was it's throw away puzzles, they wanted some really hard fights but never threw in any hard puzzles, which seemed contradictory to me (either lose them or make them appropriately challenging). Oh yeah, and the save system sucked, DMC2 & 3 had the right idea with being able to select any already completed chapter (in GoW's case it would be checkpoint) to resume on but I seem to also remember it not allowing me to save to a different slot.

I'm not saying that it needs to be DMC, they really aren't that similar just as Onimusha and DMC aren't similar, but I do think that it needs more gameplay variety which means more options. The QTEs also need to have more internal variety (multiple QTEs for every monster) or give the player more control as well if they want to avoid being so repetitive.

Is this another PS3 exclusive?

Not every QTE is the same. Also, bashing skulls in is more fun than putting on make-up. Also, God of War III is hardly an interactive movie.

But I do hate the formulaic end-bosses that most of these games have.
