Grindhouse: Planet Terror vs Death Proof

Von Drunky

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
I know some of you do not live in America, in which case you have yet to see the best movie of the year. But for those of you that have seen it which was the better one and why.

I’ll start by saying I enjoyed them both I’ve seen the movie the first show on the first day it came out (I didn’t go to sleep yet) and im going to see it again this Thursday. Planet Terror is the better film because it is action packed, Nicely shot, the flim work is very old school, has more developed character and a chick with a gun for a leg. It also has post-apocalypse elements that any Fallout fan will enjoy.

Planet Terror was a far better film than Death Proof, even though Death Proof had a much better payoff.

Tarantino should never write dialogue for women, and I hope I never see another baby-T in my life. I'm starting to wonder if the last scene doesn't just seem awesome because of the sheer amount of torture the rest of Death Proof put me through. My friend and I started heckling the movie it was so damn boring.

In the end, I just wish that Machete was a real movie.

Grindhouse will probably be split into 2 movies instead of a combo for the European market... go figure...

Agreed.

Planet Terror was better by a good margin but I did enjoy Death Proof (that chase scene had me sweating buckets).

How funny was the "Thanksgiving" trailer?

Cop 1: It's blood
Cop 2: Son of a BITCH!

In this case yes but lets not forget the master piece behind Pulp Fiction. Mia Wallace still remains one of my all time favorite female characters.

I just wish he would stop putting himself into movies. His acting skills are lacking to say the lest.

Dark Meat, White Meat... ALL will be carved.

SuAside: Any word on how they'd work out the fake trailers if they split the production?

Also, Death Proof really can't survive without Planet Terror. Half the theater left before Stuntman Mike's first performance.

Haha, that's my favorite line from the whole movie.

I really liked them both, and loved all the trailers. Death Proof needed about 10 minutes of dialogue cut from the first part of the movie, but aside from that I completely enjoyed it. Planet Terror was awesome though; nearly every cliche was turned into something witty or clever, and the whole movie flowed perfectly - it seemed like he didn't put anything on screen that didn't need to be there, and made sure that everything that was there was interesting, , even the filler or transition scenes.

One thing that surprised me - I bought tickets in advance and went on opening night, thinking that I'd have to fight for seats. The theater was barely half full though. I read around and it seems like the movie isn't making much money anywhere - which is really sad, since this is easily the funnest movie I've seen in the theater in years.

I know what you mean i was at the first show 12pm on friday. The Theater was full but still had more empty seats then i expected.

Then again a lot a movies that became cult classics find their fans later on. Also they didn’t really use Hollywood actors in major roles. I mean how many of you looked at the cast and said hey that’s the chick from The Doomed Generation I think she was also engaged to Marilyn Manson...

girl's talking amongst themselves dialogue

I guess you cant expected a dude to write Grade A material on something no dude knows nor thinks about.

no clue. the reasoning they're using is that the european audience never had a concept like a grindhouse (movies back to back). but i'm guessing they just want to make people pay twice for the same movie...

I suspect the reason is -

(1) Wait for the DVD (my excuse)
(2) More violence?
(3) It does look kind of silly.

To be honest, it does seem that Tarantino is just having fun and becoming a cliche of himself, the way Sam Peckinpah is remembered for his gritty violence. Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch (which when re-released got NC-17 because of its violence) is still an awesome flick. The Getaway, The Killer Elite, Straw Dogs are good movies. Ride the High Country did beat out Fellini's 81/2 at the Belgium Film Festival. Still Monty' Python's skit- Sam Peckinpah's Salad Days.

The problem for Tarantino is that by celebrating the violent B films, he has missed the mark of some of his better films. There is some really good stuff in Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Natural Born Killers, and True Romance. I just wish there were more of it.

My friend works at the Theater so i never pay for movies, I would pay to see this. Its not like Charlies Angles II where you waking out thinking i wasted $10 and two hours of my life on this crap.

Saw Grindhouse Friday night and was impressed. I definitely wouldn't pay to see either by themselves. Both have massive flaws, but the sum of their parts (along with the clever trailers) more than makes up for it.
Planet Terror wins because something is always happening, and it just keeps on moving right to the end. The gore is awesome, great one liners, cool characters (Freddy Rodriquez as El Ray was surprisingly badass) catchy music, and the whole thing wreaked of Escape from New York. If you liked From Dusk Till Dawn at all you should love it.

Death Proof was good, but it was way too fucking long between anything happening. You believe the dialog, unfortunately your ass is gonna start throbbing at this point in the movie. There's a long setup of broads talking about random shit, action, then another longer setup with more broads talking about more random shit, fucking awesome action. Definitely one of the best chase scenes I've ever seen. The final scene in Death Proof isn't even in the same league as Road Warrior, but I'll be damned if I didn't ask myself out loud how the fuck they just did that. I wish Kurt Russell had more screen time with a little more background to his character. Give him a history as a psycho ex stuntman. They touched on it but didn't go anywhere. He had me laughing and feeling sorry for him at the end.

There's a couple "missing reel" segments. One from Planet Terror bothered me a bit, because the movie jumps like 15 minutes and you deliberately miss some vital info. It keeps it silly, though. The scene from Death Proof would have been nice, but not necessary to move stuff along.

Overall, I highly recommend you see Grindhouse before they pull it from theaters and re-release both separately.
